I have a thousand things I could be doing

What I did instead was try to get some characters out of my head before I forgot it (and not fast enough. What I have as an opening paragraph isn't what was in my head. sigh. By the time I could there I had forgotten some of it.

See what you think of the two characters and the bit. I'm curious. I thought about making this the 1800s and then the 1920s and settled on a near earth setting, diselpunk (I'm picturing the town like Newport RI)
