Actually I've done my fair share of this sort of exploration not to mention listening to years worth of stories from friends gay and straight and most of them agree on one thing, it hurts the first time. Frankly even with preparation it hurts. For that matter, I've had guys cry on me when I've had to do rectal exams as part of my medical residency and that's just one finger with lots of lube. That is a very sensitive area, loaded with nerve endings. That's why most anal lubes come with desensitizers.
