Oh dear god Ohio!

So a study came out this week, only 28% of ALL Ohio students are ready for college when they get there. Not just my area, ALL of the damn state. They're basing this off ACT scores for better or worse. Now keep in mind a lot of schools allow skipping course work that isn't ACT related to spend more time on english/math. Of the 28%, only 35% of the students will pass a science course and it is not uncommon for them to never have had a high school science course. yeah my students have been demystified haven't they?

I had to go to an early morning meeting for lifelong learning which wasn't quite what I thought it was. It's an interesting idea, aiming for the retirees and offering a range of more fun courses (and often with travel. i.e. a short course on a civil war battle then a trip to the site, or art workshops with trips to the Guggenheim or something). It's an interesting idea and I'm glad to be involved in this. Look at me becoming both more marketable and big shoes to fill.

the OT put more kinesiotape on my arm. it's not good when you can sit and watch the edema flow under your skin...tired of pain.

Had a rough night. I had to go to bed early (didn't help) had the window open until the whatever it is I'm allergic to blew in and stuffed my face up. Closed that. had weird dreams but what I can remember is living in a rural setting with a friend and we both had abusive husbands. Our faces were covered with bruises. I was just sitting down to cannibalize him raw with her help when the alarm went off. WTF brain?

the harmonists did make wine, mostly for selling. The village still does wine tastings, naturally not when i'm home

Ouch over the Ohio students never taken a science course in high school. In my high school you're only required to take one science course to graduate, but I took three science courses as the universities I wanted to go to required two/recommended three science courses.

it's been too long to remember what my school required but I took multiple courses at the university level. The class I teach in the summer? I took THAT in 7th grade

Okay, that does explain something about your students. Good lord.

Have you been listening to "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks by any chance?

Whee, my nightmares involved zombies. And a giant mall.

LIfelong learning sounds cool.

Yeah, that's scary about the schooling. I'm afraid to know what's going on locally and back in Florida.

that dream is a keeper and time to turn it into yet another zombie book

it does

yeah seeing as FL ranks lower than OH or at least it did

Yours, definitely; mine just a bit odd. Not enough zombies for a zombie book.

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2011-09-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
tha's okay we need anotehr zombie book like we need shot

My dream where I had to kill Zombie!Vinnie!dog was much more frightening. This one was just stressful.

That is a really scary stat. We have nothing like ACTs up here so I have no idea how they work into affecting getting into college... but wow, no science in high school? I can't imagine how that'd be acceptable. It might have changed since I went, but the province regulated that students couldn't graduate unless we had grade 12 levels in two of the three sciences (bio, chem, physics). I had to take Bio30 (grade 12 mainstream) twice in order to get a high enough mark to be accepted into any post-secondary o.O;. You could take a 33 level science (which is a lower grade 12 stream) to get your diploma, but then you couldn't get into most post-secondary schools without upgrading.

we have become utterly pathetic in our abilities to educate our students. now this isn't all schools or all states but I went back to scholl in 2001 and frankly just 10 years ago the students were in better shape than they are now
