A reddish haze distorted the view of the plain Steven had to get across. His nose told him Father had gone this way and the seven year old would need to do the same. The red haze wasn’t much to worry about, other than the way it could hide the enemy. It’s when the often present mists turned yellow that he would have to hide. Those mists were toxic and foul.
Holding his dagger tightly, his fingers turning numb, Steven raced ahead, zig zagging along, just in case something stepped out of the mist. He could sheath the blade but the boy felt safer with it right in hand. Nothing menaced him until he got to the forest edge on the other side. Cormant demon.
The boy darted low, his dagger digging into the creature’s soft underbelly even as its claws raked his clothing. Steven whirled, hamstringing it. He didn’t stop to see if it was dead. Quor-Toth’s other demons would scent this one dying and flock to the area. He didn’t want to be around when that happened.
Steven paused, scenting the air. Father shouldn’t be too far off now. The boy took to the trees, just high enough he could still catch a scent. Most creatures wouldn’t look up. Steven grinned, Father wouldn’t escape from him this time. It was going to be the best hide and seek ever.

Beautiful job, as always, as well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You'll be happy to know that yesterday was SO MUCH BETTER than my actual birthday. I don't know what's up with that. I think I'm still full of Red Robin...
