Today I release a finished story into the wild thanks to wipbigbang. I am thrilled to have finally finished this after SO many years. I'll be honest, part of this ended up where I originally planned (as close as I can remember). Not so much with Lindsey's thread which I debated cutting after 17 years and have no clue what to do with him (I think that's what originally stalled the story) I worked around it rather than remove it because well six chapters had been out there all this time and some people know my stories better than me! I know Ethan was meant to be in it with Amy but meh, I decided why do I need him. Give Amy her own agency such as it was. Anyhow I hope you'll enjoy it.


Story Title: DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

Summary: A year after Sunnydale collapses, Buffy and Faith head to L.A. for the Christmas holidays but it’s not going to be a silent night.

Warnings: violence, death of a minor character (I guess some would argue he’s a major character but I don’t assign that much importance to him)

Author’s Note # 1 This is canon divergent. Back in 2003 when I started this, I wasn’t thrilled that Spike was moving to Angel (though in retrospect that worked better than I imagined it would). Also I originally planned to have them deal with the emotional impact of Spike’s sacrifice but the story didn’t bounce that way. I decided not to tamper with that. Regardless, Spike was not resurrected in this canon divergence.

Author’s Note #2 - The story set up is a bit of an oddity for me. The first few chapters will be non-linear covering parts of the preceding year before the main action set up in chapter one. All months and dates will be on the chapter headers for clarity. Also it’ll be multiple first person POV’s also noted clearly in the header.

I FINALLY finished putting up the polished chapters of Like Stone up on AO3. Oh I'd like to have a third time through but I need a break to come back with fresh eyes. (and no, still haven't used rahirah's edits because I need more damn hours in a day). It's far too long to post here. Ironically this sets up what I spent the early months of this year whining about: having a story in one spot and losing it. Well there are better methods of saving things these days so I'll risk it. Summary - Twenty years after the battle with the First and the aftermath of Jasmine’s reign, life still isn’t easy for Buffy and Angel and their friends and family. Connor has been on the outside of his father’s life for years and isn’t particularly happy to be brought back in when Dawn shows up in L.A. with a case that requires his attention. But that is just the beginning of the badness threatening to swallow them all whole.

Timeline – 20 years post series ending.

Author’s Note –Since this was started in in 2003, it was written before season five of Angel and before any of the comic book canon so it’s an alternative reality story (which is why Connor has a different last name. Origins hadn’t aired yet). I’m also amused that I predicted the return of the X-Files back then. I almost changed the show’s name here but decided to leave the show title as I had it back in 2003. Thanks to evil_little_dog and rahirah for betaing at least a part of this fan novel. And a big thanks to penaltywaltz for the two soundtracks and art for this. I love it and you need to check it out! Author’s Note #2 Things Andrew did in Dead Things (namely the attempted gang rape of Warren’s girlfriend and her murder) and other murder/attempted murders in canon, guaranteed this was not a character I liked because he never paid a price for that. There are scenes were some of the characters are equally not okay with him later in this story.

Author’s Note 2 – I’m not exactly sure when I wrote this as it seems to be published at none of my usual spots. However, judging by the subject matter, I’m going to say it was around 2006-2008. The Mothman Festival is a real thing but it no longer uses the amphitheater for the talks described here and the Bennigan’s is long gone. But in the time frame I just mentioned this is how the festival was and yes I’ve retconned this a tiny bit. Also it’s AR, ignoring the comic canon because at the time I hadn’t read them (and still haven’t as far as the Buffy comics are concerned).

It wasn’t like he planned it this way. Angel knew it could have turned out worse but he wasn’t entirely sure how. L.A. had been sucked into a hell dimension in no small part because of the actions of he and his friends. Someone had to stand against the demons. Angel thought they would have died. Some of them had. He blamed himself. All these souls trapped, including his friends; worse, including his son. Angel wished more than anything Connor had listened to him and run. Still, he was happy not to be alone in this galaxy of lost souls.

I'd be interested in post-series Connor/Dawn and the issues surrounding having constructed memories’. This is the longest Whedonverse story I’ve done in ages. It is alternative reality, mostly because I don’t really know the comics well and I didn’t want to see half of Team Angel dead. Thanks to evil_little_dog for the beta.
