My right eye is okay. He thinks maybe I'm having an allergic reaction to the silicon they use in the newer contacts. He's given me older style contacts as a trial which...worst timing. If My eye swells up again I don't want it to be at this con. No glaucoma, no diabetic retinopathy (huge relief), no scarring of my cornea (also huge relief) They were offering pictures of the back of your eyes for 25$ (insurance no pay) Being diabetic with issues of control, I said yes. Might as well get a good baseline. Also there is a relief in looking at them and seeing no bleeding, no macular degeneration or optic nerve swelling. That said, my vision is shit and has gotten worse. I'm now roughly at 20/320 so no I can't see the big E on the snellen chart and without my glasses/contacts I'm legally blind. They couldn't give me the sample contacts at the right diopter. (they only had -.75 and I need higher)


But while I was in there a storm hit. It didn't last long but the drive home was filled with broken trees and the road was flooded and I was going to get dinner because now I can't see and I don't have a lot of food at home because I'm leaving for 10 days. And...the power was out to all the restaurants. Raptor shrieks. (had hot dogs because somehow I have packs of them in the freezer with packs of bacon as a shrine to bad choices.

Also I had to renew my plates and I about fainted when I opened the paperwork. They more than doubled the damn price. I pointed that out at the BMV and they said 'it went up but not double.' Oh really? Because I have it right here in my check book (ohio is stupid, it's cheaper to pay by check than credit card by like 10$) It was 34 last year and it's 66 this year so how is that not double? She couldn't answer me.

I did not have a good day today when it came to cleaning. I don't even know what happened. It was 11 AM and then suddenly 2 pm and I accomplished nothing. I'm annoyed at myself. I did pack my suitcase tonight while my eyes were dilated because I couldn't do much else.

Rocket had a banner night last night. he lined up three dead mice for me. Thanks buddy. Nothing like a sidewalk of dead rodents

Day 3: Favourite female character. You'd think it would be Buffy but actually it's Willow. I saw a lot of myself in early Willow, like a lot. I was pretty much her in high School. I liked her a bit less toward the end (we're not even getting into Dark Willow, that was handled so badly) especially with the whole throwing Buffy out of her own house.

But I liked Willow alot. She was smart, loyal and funny. Alyson was probably a bit too cute to be the outsider nerd girl but otherwise I loved her.

And I will say this, I also liked Cordelia. Yes she was the mean girl and I had girls like her in my life back then and 40 years later I'm still pissed as hell at them. I think she was well done by Charisma (and did not deserve what happened to her).

Oh yes I love Willow and Cordelia. I think the salvation of Cordelia was her relationship with Xander. She was a bitch, but he softened her. Did they split up in the end, I can't remember? And Willow was so 'me'- geeky, unconfident, clever, unpopular.

Also, I'm glad about your right eye!

True about Xander. Yeah he and Willow hooked up sort of (Now I can't remember if they had sex or just made out) so he cheated on Cordy (which is how we ended up with Anya as a character) and Willow cheated on Oz. I think a lot of viewers saw themselves in Willow.

I seem to remember Xander and Willow were in bed, and Cordelia caught them, then she fell on something sharp and nearly died.

I suppose a lot of people who liked the Buffy series were geeky, clever, unpopular so we all liked Willow.

You're right about fandom being disjointed. I was just replying to someone to say that when I was little we had 3 TV channels so everyone watched the same shows at the same time, and talked about them the next day. There were no video recorders to save shows for later, so if you missed an episode, you missed it. There was more of a community around entertainment in those days.

Now days people watch what they want, when they want and don't get to talk about it with anyone else.

there is that. I don't know about in the UK but since you and I are around the same age I only had 5 stations as a kid but man as soon as VCRs came out my parents got one. That was freeing.

And they do talk about fandom but it's all over! It's on twitter and bluesky, on youtube especially and these old school blogs, a lot less so and that's what I miss. That interaction. They talk enough about it to get into ship wars that make the Buffy day ones seem tame (worse, there is an uncomfortable level of bullying the creators going on these days. I've blogged about that a lot)

But yeah there is SO much to watch these days, spoiled for choice.

I had 3 TV stations as a child, then it rose to 4 when I was a teenager and 5 when I reached my 20s. Then after that it exploded and now we have hundreds.

My mum got a video ASAP too, which was convenient but once people started to watch things on demand, anytime, we lost the sense of community IMO. Sharing experiences about TV shows was a lot of fun and brought us together. I remember rushing into school or work many times to discuss the latest episode of (whatever show) with my friends.

Yes there’s no specific places for each fandom now are there? It’s all over the place and we’re lucky to meet other fans of our shows. That’s one reason I like DW, generally we can find fellow enthusiasts for shows.

Bullying the creators is definitely not on! Decades ago the creators were so far removed from fans that they wouldn’t dare bully them. I wonder now days if creators and actors are TOO close to fans due to all these channels – YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr etc. If I was a creator or actor, I’d step back and let my PR person handle it all.

See I almost never did that. The only show I ever remember having in common with anyone that we rushed to watch was Beauty and the Beast. I swear my whole dorm watched that. I had a few friends I talked X Files with but really it was Buffy in the early 00s where I started having a fandom community about tv.

I was active in Pern and Elfquest back in the paper zine days in the 80s and 90s though.

Oh yes, we all have different experiences. But I did love the conversations I had at school and work about shows and films. Such happy days those were! Now we are all isolated, watching things alone.

Yes, that article neatly summarises how people think being cynical and not believing or liking anyone else makes them seem cool and intelligent. And today's 'fun sport' is tearing down others online, just so they feel superior.

Not nice at all. Especially as it means people look for offence and insults in every comment. The other day I was complimenting a friend, they took it as an insult and blocked me, saying they didn't want to discuss it. Really, truly weird. I couldn't see how my compliment could be read as an insult in any way, I analysed it word by word. SMH.

That’s the problem isn’t it—it’s hard to find people who watch the same thing as us now days.

It seems the tearing down group is getting bigger and bigger, and seen as the cool, fashionable group to belong to.

It was absolutely weird about my friend, we’d been friends for 1 or 2 years, so it wasn’t a new thing. The only thing I can think is, Brits are extremely sarcastic and I said something that seems innocuous to me, but may appear sarcastic to Americans. But being unwilling to even discuss it is mega weird, like they didn’t want an explanation. I suspect they wanted an excuse to dump me, instead of trying to sort out the problem and compromise, negotiate. People don’t negotiate anymore, do they? They just block.

It’s one of many experiences I've had recently that make me think people just want reassuring, bland replies, like we’d get from an AI. They want people who agree with them and don’t say anything challenging. So that’s what they’re going to get from me from now on, I’m going to try and sound like an AI 🤷‍♀️

honestly yeah people do tend to want yes men and are super quick to block. It probably feels right at the time but man their world view is going to get blasted at some point

I just wonder how this is going to end. Is everyone going to eventually block everyone else and no one will have any friends? It happened to me on DW too which was surprising, I thought people here were more reasonable. I just wonder how people are going to get back to negotiating, compromising, having actual relationships instead of blocking the minute there is a difference of opinion. We used to be able to handle differences of opinion, but we can't anymore.

I'm so glad there's nothing too major going on with your eyes. That stuff can be so complicated and scary. Anything that involves losing a sense can be though, and maybe it would be better to have an answer then just knowing your eyes aren't working as well as they used to, and it's just how it is right now.

Yeah, as a diabetic I do not mess around with my vision because I know I have a high chance of losing it. It wouldn't be surprising that I'm allergic to silicon. I'm allergic to many things (thankfully not food) I'm already allergic to the multipurpose solution. And if my eyes are going to get inflamed by contacts I'll wear my glasses (but it would be nice to have contacts to swim in so if going back to the older style contact works I'll be happy because as I said, I'm legally blind without corrective lenses. I can't even see the steps to get into the pool)
