So I was there when it opened because I had to vacate the hotel and the coffee house I wanted to go to is on street parking and good luck finding a spot. Ha. My new GPS doesn't know its left from its right but it's rather hard to miss the Washington County fairground building. I have questions. Big ones.

This venue is on par with the tiny cons my friends run in Athens or the one at my university. the space is about the size of a basketball court. So HOW did they get nearly a dozen guests lined up? Granted these aren't A listers but still. I thought there would be more events than this. Nope just the cosplay and the vendors so note to self, next time just drive up. There are no lines for this (much like the aforementioned small cons) or at least come up to Marietta and do other things the night before.

The vendors were good. I bought crap I don't need like usual (You bought a plant Dana. Go to your shame corner). I bought more rocks (now you stay in that shame corner) but I didn't buy books (okay you can come out eventually) I did get a cool wine glass (I thought it was glass but its food safe resin) with Medusa on it. More and more she feels like my spiritual twin. Bought some holiday gifts.

Had the singularly worst cup of coffee this year. They had a drink vendor, mostly these fruity drinks made of 90% torani syrups and pop. I can't drink those (because my sugar is sky high today, maybe because I slept like crap on that rock hard broke ass bed) 'oh we just added coffee'. It sounded good. Basically caramel and butterscotch with some whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. At least it wasn't pricey. I swear to you there was a demon in it that drank up the sugar because it was bitter as hell in spite of the syrups and I'm fairly sure it was just brown water. Like did you make a singular cup of coffee and then water it down into this?!?

So...I met Butch Patrick. I did think Eddie Munster was cute when I was a child. He was a sweet guy seemed very impressed that I was a doctor (that came up in conversation with someone else standing in line while we waited for the boomer to figure out how to use his phone to take payment). Shook my hand upon meeting me wasn't expecting that.

I had planned to go to Spagna's for lunch, the Italian place I like in Marietta but oops it's dinner only but right around the corner (literally) is Harmar historical village within Marietta (one of the oldest cities in Ohio) and Harmar tavern. I did a dumb thing. I looked at the ABV percentage of alcohol after I drank the drink. I'm like Oooo Ace's Peach cider (they do, for my money, the best ciders in America) I didn't think about it having a lot of alcohol. Only as much as three beers. Oops. I tried food I wouldn't normally eat, a juicy lucy with pimento cheese, hot honey and pickles. It seemed like usual sandwich price...only I learned it had no fries/chips/side of any kind so that made it pricier and...someone in their kitchen needs to learn what a juicy lucy is (the cheese is inside the burger). It was tasty but it wasn't a juicy lucy.

I also needed gas so I swung past Stokes coffee shop on my way to the gas station which I haven't been too in forever. Pumpkin Maple Macchiato oooo so good. I let the caffeine and alcohol battle it out (shut up liver, you're fine)

I stopped off in Athens at Marshall's for more christmas shopping and into Jackson for my brisket sandwich (eating more beef in one day than I usually do all month)

And then I cam home and started grading the last class of bone practical exams. It's finally happened. Someone scored a zero. They wrote something in every blank but missed all 85 questions. I didn't think that was possible. Also everyone the hyoid is NOT a baby mandible. Good guess though. Can someone get more about five more of those 10% alcohol ciders?

in the pouring rain at night at 65 miles per hour all I can hear is Jack Burton saying I never drive faster than I can see...and it's all in the reflexes.

So I had to give two of the bone tests today and it left me leaving later than I wanted to get to Athens for the writers meet up (i.e. me and MKF) and from there on to Marietta so it's about 80 miles of highway from here to there. Ah well I'm here, alive and well and apparently only a handful of doors down from Eddie Munster and several wrestlers who are all guests at the Marietta Monster Mash. It should be fun (and it starts an hour later than I thought so I should find something to do in the morning. I wouldn't mind going to Jeremiah's but the onstreet parking for that coffee shop sucks it hard)

And the lady I talked to last night did me a favor. I have a mini suite with two couches AND at the con rate of 70$ and she introduced me to the con's showrunner (guess she liked me)

Let's do fannish friday

Starting with my review of Hazbin Hotel's 3rd and 4th episodes

under here because 98% of you aren't into the fandom and it got long because I got excited )

And I wrote a story for [personal profile] spikesgirl58's challenge and yes it IS spoilery for Hazbin S2E3

Title: No Matter How Strong, I'm Gonna Take You Down

Summary: Anthony knows it’s either him or his father and he will do what he has to. The aftermath isn’t all he expected

Notes: Major spoilers for S2 Episode 3 and Angel’s backstory. Definitely watch the episode first.

Written for spikesgirl58’s 6 word challenge. The words were Harmony, Abort, Drug, Muddled, Slippery, & Apathetic

Also written for the allbingo prompt of I didn't want power. All I wanted was control. over my life and the lyrical titles bingo challenge for the prompt an angry song. I chose Dinner at Eight by Rufus Wainright

Story under here or at the above link )

And all the fandom recs will have to wait maybe til tomorrow. It's quite late.

So I didn't open emails over the weekend because of the con. I open it today and in my two online only classes I have 40 students between two classes. Out of those 40 THREE wrote me to say we can't see the notes for the final unit. I turned that on a week ago sunday and the quizzes were due yesterday. The final on this is due friday.

THREE people out of 40. And they're right. The notes are messed up. I fixed it. I extended the quizzes and the final (the class locks off next week because friday is technically the last day of class) so my question is WHY would you not contact the professor if something was wrong.

And the other stuff isn't working either and IT says it's McGraw Hill who says I'm doing it wrong, you know the same thing I've done for 20 damn years. And btw am doing exactly how they're telling me to do it. screams into the void.

But as for yesterday, I came home to go to Bob Fest vs going to the last day of the con. Honestly I can bump this back to every other year too. I know where all the vendors are and how much more could I use from any of them? Sure the coffee/honey/maple vendors I can always use (as if I can't get it from Kroger, literally in the coffee's case, they're local and carried by Kroger) How much more glass can I get from the glass blower (the answer is a blue bird for mom and a purple one for me) I did skip the jerky (getting too expensive) got the cheese from my cheesemonger.

And I was going to get some bougie boozy jam. How much are these? two for 35$. Sure thing. She sees me with jelly jars in hand. I sneak them onto a shelf and scamper off. You can't scamper with a cane. Lordee no.

I did buy a left handed hand carved spoon with a scraper (which is why it's handed, not that I suspect it matters much) It's walnut and he carves the wood type and date into it. 2012. I was sad for my spoon. It's been going to festival after festival for 13 years and no one wanted it. Poor spoon (which yes that is animism right there) I was going to give it to Dad but I think I'll keep this poor unwanted spoon (I stir left handed anyhow)

I pet some long horns (owned by one of my current students) and came home.

have some con pictures under here )

And it's music monday. Since it's spooky time let's continue with the spooky music

My knee is in business for itself and the rest of me is thinking WTF are you DOING? I was over at the con by 10 AM to hear the first of my planned panels. (Here's the funny thing THREE of the four panels I picked out today were all Vitamin H panels) This one was not. It was run by a cute nerdy kid who was SO thrilled to see me as I was only the 4th person through the door and the other three were his friends. (more people did come but the con didn't open until 10 so it's like maybe schedule the panels on the half hour?)

It was about all the literature in Bungo Stray Dogs. If you don't know this anime/manga all its characters are named for literary figures and/or references. He had slides for all the references and did a kahoots quiz at the end. It was a lot of fun but damn I need to reread this (and you know finish it. I trailed off midway)

From there I went to a slasher movie panel (all the remaining ones are by Vitamin H) which was just a blast. Hey they put in Suspiria, Italian horror from 77 (I just learned the other day it had been remade about 8 years ago) After that I had a BIG break with nothing much I wanted to see until 3 pm.

Here I go into the vendor's room unsupervised. I'm thirsty and this asshole convention center has NO water fountains so you have to buy from their concessions (this is not Tsu's fault) which is like 8$ a damn glass so I get in line for Wild Bill's boutique pop brewery because he FINALLY has a zero sugar option. I get up there and the cheapest you can do it for (because you HAVE to buy the 'collector's stainless steel mug') was THIRTY-FIVE fucking dollars. FOR POP! He wanted another 15$ for the lid/straw. Thanks. I'll take my fucking chances and the cooler mugs were north of 50 bucks. And the zero sugar blueberry pop SUCKED. It was SO bad. So I said fuck it, this is like Dana at a buffet. I'm consuming 35$ worth of stuff to offset the rip off pricing. I made a choice 'just be gross about it. Consume all you can. You have insulin. Get the full sugar birch or root beer which are the only 2 pops you like outside of gingerale (i don't like pop. I don't like carbonation) I have a full mug in my fridge right now. It was COMING WITH ME. I drank so damn much pop.

Lunch was a shitty pepperoni roll and pop.

I got a few more gifts for friends. Keep me away from dice. I was really annoyed that I wanted to get Loona (helluva boss) for a friend's daughter and every Helluva boss woman I found from bigger vendors were grossly sexualized. You know the type, gravity defying boobs of doom and barely clothed with tongue lolling out just for youuuuuu. Ugh. I did find her a little keychain. I got dice with little purple owls in them for reasons. But my favorite purchase of the whole con was from
Pink Pig studios who had sweet shippy stuff for Cherri/Pen (the one I mentioned last night) Huskerdust (guilty I bought it) and Vaggie/Charlie but also she was a huge Keith David fan and she did one of Husk in Keith's role in John Carpenter's The Thing!!! Yes it's mine. And I'm obsessed. I told her I am absolutely writing fanfic to this. Husk can't wait for me to find time. Too bad none of my [personal profile] spook_me prompts fit it.

I wander to the hotel to rest up for a bit since I'm done shopping and no panels I want. Open my social media to ALL the Hazbin and Glitch news from NY comic con (will share on tuesday's post) and people have been clipping Valentino's beautiful art of Vox he drew in the meeting and now I can't get it out of my head, he drew Angel too back in the love bombing days. Plot bunnies all over the damn place. Found calls from my brother and Mom (I had the phone silenced). Thought maybe someone died. No. My brother go another kitten. Cute bugger too.

I go to my last panels (grabbing pop before, between and after because dammit 35$) one on Studio Ghibli behind the scenes and one on Youkai (the theme this year) both excellent. I had never heard that Kappa will reach up your ass to grab out your soul. Well then. Or that tanuki have balls that can be stretched out for yards to form tents, blankets, whatever it needs. side eyes Japan hard.

Runs for more pop. Attends the great manga swap and fail at it miserably. HAHA. Honestly I didn't want to swap. I had a bunch of manga. Sorted it last night, left about 6 here because I realize I only had half a set for a few so back home they go. Before it started I asked the traveling manga library librarian, if no one wants this ancient manga (all of it was from 2000-2015) can I donate it to you? YES. Great.

I didn't even have it all laid out before someone swooped up 'you have tactics!!' what do you want for them? I look at her offerings. Nothing, they're yours. She danced off. A young girl sweeps up from nowhere, 'Vampire Knight?!?' I want nothing from that disappointment of a series. Take it from my sight (I said it nicer naturally)

I give my single volume one offs to the library for two volumes of Interlocken and now I'm left with 5 volumes of Venus vs Virus and the only thing I really want is the drifting classroom omnibus but the guy is like no, I have that (meanwhile it was HIS girlfriend who scooped up tactics but whatever dude) I find one guy with some BL stuff and I know who he is, a vendor who is trying to get stuff to take to his stand. Give me these Stars of Chaos light novels for this 5 volumes? no? 2? yes.

I'm now done. I get more pop. Leave and look to go to Fazio's. rated best Italian restaurant in WV. I find it. No one is on the street, park out front. Go in and it was as I feared. I was WOEFULLY underdressed. See, my dress shirt? It got trashed by blue crab/goat cheese cream sauce yesterday. And why I didn't think of putting on my Edalyn shirt/skirt until just now...I'm tired yinz. I'm the only one in a t-shirt (thank god it was the dark blue one you can barely make out). I'm shocked I wasn't turned away. There were kids in black tie (Prom? Nah that's spring. Wedding? Probably)

They had both Negronis and Aperol Spritzs on the menu so I am content they at least know Italian cocktails and the place has no windows (comforting, for reasons) and a diverse menu. They bring a salad (body is going what is this, no it has vitamin K but OMG Italian dressing. Face down yummy) and then give me three pieces of garlic bread sopping in garlic butter/cheese yay for scarpettas! (Wait, bread? AGAIN! You had four slices last night. Your diabetes....shut up and eat the bread). I got the baked manicotti. Oooo good. I got the aperol spritz too (see, T-Shirt girl can afford your cocktails). By the time I leave (I got there at like 630) the line was out the door to get in. At least this waitress wasn't a snot like last time.

Roll on home to have like an hour before the online Abney Park Halloween concert I had bought before realizing I'd be sitting in a hotel room listening.

And guess what I'm drinking. That's right POP (and my blood sugar is 130...go figure)
cornerofmadness: (Default)
Charleston WV it like an hour and 10 minutes from me. It's closer than Columbus. I think it stems from when I moved down here and back then there wasn't a highway TO the city and you had to poke your way through cow country. I about cried when they moved Tsubasacon back here from Huntington (which is actually further from me!!)

Surely there has to be things to see over here, being a capitol city right? I'm only ever here for Madri Gras casino or Tsu. But the fact this is only 60 miles away is why I never stay for the con and only come one day (it's small and the panels have been...meh). However last year I got here like a half hour after it opened last year and I was in the check in line for TWO hours. It wasn't worth that. So I decided why not spend the night and do the evening stuff.

Turns out that was a such a good idea. Opening ceremonies were at 3. I got here 10 to 3 and was about to check in to the holiday inn across the street. I check in and decide I want to see the 630 panel SOOOO I'm getting too old and lazy to do multiple changes of clothing so I hop over to get my weekend badge and there is NO ONE in line. OMG. I whip in and now I have 1 1/2 hours before dinner (because of reasons)so I check out the vendors room because I know the Hellaverse shit will sell out asap.

I get more compliments on my walks in the graveyard t-shirt from Betty than I was likely to on my cosplay (I was right No one said boo about my Edalyn). I was going at mach one through it but yes I did notice a) almost all the same vendors as usual b) none of them seems to have changed their stock, sigh c) found the coaster guy who I got Valentino by at Mothman fest. Got more overpriced coasters (had to have huskerdust and a beautiful one of Roy Mustang, my forever anime husband) I know I will go much more slowly tomorrow, get some more holiday gifts (not you [personal profile] evil_little_dog I'm good through 4/26)

Don't let me buy more dice. Don't let me buy another t-shirt. Knee cap me if you see me going for wall art. Stickers dana, stick to stickers. Texted BFF from college to get her child. Should text others while tempting I probably should not get JK the wall art of Cherri and Pentious.

So I haul over my goods back to the hotel. The elevator makes worrisome sounds. I change into a non-t-shirt for dinner because the one thing I've noticed about Charleston, it had at least three James Beard nominated/winning chefs running around (That's like the Oscars for chefs for the non-foodies on my list) two are at restaurants with James Beard pricing (30$ for a salad, yeah No. 35$ for fried chicken? I'll hit KFC first). However Ristorante Abruzzi has barely over normal Italian prices and is supposed to be abruzzese inspired (and that's where my family is from)

I pull into the parking garage across the street, get out and into the elevator. It's for the hospital. Okay...I go to the first floor and it opens INTO the hospital. Well then. I return to the car and the lot next to the restaurant is for the ballpark behind it. I go across the street the other way where there is a huge parking lot for family dollar and a lung center and toss up my handicapped tag hoping I won't get towed and go in. Neat menu but I should have gone for the mushroom pasta instead of the blue crab/goat cheese ravioli with a wine cream sauce, sweet corn and asparagus. Honestly the corn seemed weird in this and the goat cheese overpowered the crab (except on my breath). It was good but I expected more. I did get a stuck up waiter who was obviously pissed off to get a solo patron at HIS table (in fancy jeans, not a pantsuit. Eye roll)

I return to the hotel, pull on my Edalyn Clawthorn (The Owl House) cosplay and walk over. I get three Japanese buns for dessert and late night snacks and try to find the panel I want Hot Anime Dads I can't find it. Find one on yokai but it's the same awful presenter I sat through last year. He was still awful and I'm only catching the tail end.

I leave and try my phone out of desperation as I don't have internet access on it...until today! After 3 weeks it's working again and I find my panel in the big room. Yay. Vitamin H are two sapphic partners who are 'professional panelists.' I did NOT know that was a thing but their quality shows that they are doing this often and well. They picked a bunch of dads throughout the years. They were funny and thorough and I really liked this panel. My only problem...my sugar bottomed out (in spite of pasta dinner) had to eat my buns. damn

My next panel isn't for an hour. I should have gone to find the band but instead I stop in to the manga library and read X-Gender (not for me) and made it halfway thru Hooves of Death about unicorns in Yellowstone protecting humans from zombies...

the 830 panel was on urban legends in Japan, also by Vitamin H. I thought this was even better than the first (with the one exception of they couldn't dim the lights and some stuff was hard to see) I couldn't believe how many girl ghost in the bathroom slasher movies there are.

Came back happy with this day. Found the groaning moaning elevator is broken (I'm on the 6th floor) at least one was working and oh this room basically has a fainting couch perfect for stretching out and using my lap desk. the twist I put on my knee yesterday has left it swollen

I had my writerly ways nearly done, the browser crashed and for a second time the blog did NOT save a draft. I'll do that another day.

And my title isn't a lie. It is spooky. I went down to microwave something and the whole lobby/halls were empty. Just a few hours ago it had been bustling with all the steampunkers. Now it was like we were never there.

This morning went really well if you can ignore the low energy/half the people already mentally checking out. I went to a make your own tea blend thing. I've always wanted to do this with Adagio (still do) I wouldn't have called this a workshop really. It's like here's the tea, here's the mix-ins, go for it. I'll let you take 1 ounce for the 10$ you paid.... I mixed up whiskey black tea with some lapsang sou chong, added in cacao shells, ginger and cinnamon with a sprinkle of elderflower and called it Husk. I haven't tried it yet.

The next panel was by my friend Leanna on Poe and mesmerism. I very much enjoyed that. I thought I had an hour for lunch but no. The Victorians and the supernatural in literature was next. 15 minutes into it, no one showed and I thought well maybe since all the other talks were at the half hour not the top of the hour maybe the speaker was mistaken (wondering if it was Leanna since this is her forte). Someone went to find staff and next thing we know (it was a packed room) Leanna swoops in. No, this wasn't her panel. That person bugged out without telling anyone (how to get uninvited next year) and like I said it's Leanna's thing. She did well.

I said goodbye after that because the final panels had no interest for me. I headed out to Evergreen Cemetery to find Jennie Wade's grave (the one civilian death in Gettysburg) That was easy. There were other cool graves. and some fun names, can't remember them all but there was Solomon Toot, someone named Zephaniah and a mausoleum bearing the name Ball-Dickson (yes I became 12). Also found one mausoleum entirely in Italian.

From there I rolled down the street (past the hotel I usually stay in with my brother and SiL because it's in walking distance to all the interesting stuff. This con hotel is about 3 miles out) and stop at Mr. G's home made ice cream and texted my chocolate peanut butter to my brother to taunt him ( he loves it) God made the chocolate drip on my shirt in retailation.

Then I went to the battlefield to get pics of some of the monuments. After that it was dinner and I went to GarryOwen's Irish Pub. It was metered parking only (but I found plenty) and it's old fashioned meters, only takes quarters. I forgot about that. Then I remembered in some states handicapped tags can park for free. I google it. In PA I can do that for one hour so up goes my tag and in I go for the crab imperial 'poutine' (fries, cheese and the crab imperial in the place of the gravy) Tasty but SMALL for the price (ended up stopping at Sheetz for a hot dog to round out the meal, really goes together). I also had an Earl Grey Sour, gin, lemon juice and earl grey simple syrup. I think it needed a strong earl grey taste (I need to try making this syrup)

I was going to go ghost hunting but I'm exhausted and there was a writers' meet up on Discord tonight. I did that instead and got a little writing done before Discord fucked up and that was that.

Here's what I would have mentioned on the writerly ways: Always be on the watch for story fodder (Well Gettysburg is good for that) As I pulled into the Sheetz there was a man on the corner holding a nearly full sized cross and he had a microphone/transmitter with him. He started haranging people. As I was pumping gas, he was screaming at two women in a car at the redlight. JEZEBEL! You're whore like your mother. JEZEBEL JEZEBEL. You need to find God. Better hope you don't die tonight or you'll be in hell you diseased JEZEBEL.

Holy shit.

On to Hershey tomorrow.

And sometime this week I WILL catch up with comments (if there is any blog post you think I need to see, send it to me)
cornerofmadness: the saiyuki gang looking around a door (fangirls)
There were fewer panels I wanted to sit in on and much fewer things I want from the vendors. I did go to a ghost talk with my friend in the morning (why at 10 AM people? We goths aren't made for morning. Did I mention you can tell a lot of older Steampunks were goths in the 80s and 90s? If not you should have seen the 80s=goth DJ party last night when The Cure came on and we were all dancing)

Speaking of which I am paying for it today. I'm having issues with the nerve damage all day. I had to take a few breaks because of it.

I wanted to do the make your own dice bag thing (but they way they do registrations here sucks) so I go where I was directed to go by his partner but turns out there was TWO of them, one for the VIPS and the one for the rest of us so when I ask him about the registration he just looks at me and says 'this is VIP only' You'd THINK he'd of added, go see my partner next door. I drag out of there embarrassed (and into break number one)

The afternoon session was about the history of tarot cards and I enjoyed that but there wasn't another panel I wanted to hear until 4 so break number two after another disappointing round through the vendors. I got a few less expensive things as holiday gifts but some things were SO expensive. Like the fun literary chocolates where they married classic novels with foods/drinks in those novels and made chocolates from them, like bilberries for Jane Eyre or nori and ginger for Cthulu. I planned to get several as gifts figuring they were 6-8$ a piece. they were much much more. Like twice that. I kept the flavor catalogue (I make own chocolates, no reason I can't try some of this myself) But maybe I'm the cheap ass bulking at pay 12$ for a chocolate bar because one couple raced up because they'd already finished the chocolate they bought yesterday and bought 6 more (that's over 70$, sorry but I can get a week's groceries for that)

There was a guy with collage art that was cool and the big pieces were 100$ which fair for that but he had ones the size of post cards that would have been loved by a couple friends but it was nearly that (or make me an offer. He seemed a little desperate. I didn't want to insult him because yes I don't know exactly what the cost of his time and materials should be but 50$ for a 3 inch square of burlap covered in things seemed...high)

I did get to talk to the woman doing the tarot thing. She runs a destination D&D thing in both new orleans and in a castle in the UK. It's something to look into. That could be fun.

The mocktail talk with Calamity Dawn was good. I knew what a Boulevardier cocktail was so she gave me the mock version. I had just used that in a story too. The alcohol free spirits did a passable bourbon attempt (but something in it made her and me cough, not sure what)

Tonight for me was all about music. First up was Steamcordia who...honestly plays accordian better than he sings. He stumbled over several songs.

Then came the main act, Frenchy and the Punk which I very much enjoyed. Ended up buy 2 cds (there was a price break and I didn't have cash enough for one and figured if I'm getting the card out...) It was a crazy long line for her that I was at the head of so I'll see if she's in the vendor's room again tomorrow and have her sign the cases.

Lastly came This Way to the Egress. I heard some of it but at this point it's 11 and I'm getting tired (feeling my age)

So overall a good night. I'll bring science saturday back next week.
cornerofmadness: (Default)
I'm too tired to do it justice (and friday's fannish 50 will probably be moved to tuesday). I hit a new museum here in town, Beyond the Battle out of the Adams County Historical Society. It was a nice idea and a small museum (with two enthusiastic older lady docents) It starts with local dinosaur findings, then a wee bit (very wee) on the local natives and then the making of Pennsylvania (and it's skirmishes with Maryland)

There was some on a famous local abolitionist and naturally quite a bit about the battle of Gettysburg and afterward (including Mag Palm who I learned about last year, the woman who beat up the slave catchers who came for her even though she was a freeborn woman)

It also went into the Spanish flu pandemic, WWI and WII I guess the Eisenhowers retired here.

But the really cool thing was 'Caught in the crossfires' It was set up like the sitting area of a typical house in the mid 1800s in disarray. You're sat in there and it's five minutes of what it was like in Gettysburg in those three days. The 'family' is in the basement and you can hear their voices as cannons and guns fire on the house with lights appearing in the 'bulletholes' in the walls, screams of animals and people and the floor shakes. They put effort into it (Not recommended for people with PTSD related to battle)

From there I went to the Shriver House museum and cracked the key as to when to get to downtown historic Gettysburg. Get there by 11 and you can find plenty of on street parking (during the week at least) The house was down up in period pieces and tells the story of the Shrivers. The husband was set off to war (thinking it wouldn't last long) while Hettie takes care of their two daughters and tries to keep the business going, a saloon in the basement and a two lane bowling alley (Shriver had sold off his farm and had a fair bit of money when he built this place.

It doesn't have a happy ending. I got the diary of the neighbor girl plus the one about the Shrivers (and a book on battlefield hospitals) These Shrivers are distantly related to the famous ones, like Arnie's wife.

Since the festivities didn't start until late today I went to the movie theater here on campus and saw Fantastic Four. I loved it with one major exception. I'm biased. I can't remember if FF was my first comic or if it was Justice League but I know Johnny Storm was my first comic book crush so there's that. I adored the mid-Century American feel (with the futuristic tech). What I liked, they reduced the origin story to a news clip since most of us know it and that Sue didn't get sidelined because she was pregnant.

What did annoy me: Reed, the world's smartest man, saying something stupid in a press conference that he could have not said a word about and for what? 10 minutes of drama? We could have done that a different way. Other than that, really liked it

At the con, I got to see my friends and I've already bought a few things. One thing they can do better (and I'll put that in my response if they do a survey) was tell us WHO are doing the panel talks. I went to one and it was Calamity Dawn and her cocktails which I didn't mind. I like her but I didn't even know it WAS her. Drank malort. don't rec.

I did notice that a lot of the usual actors aren't here in the vending room. Hmm, I need to look at them more carefully tomorrow. It's holiday shopping time.

I went dancing and I went to the magic lantern 'castel' presentation. I need to work magic lanterns into a story somewhere.

If I'm slow in answering you, sorry but man I didn't even get back til nearly midnight. I'm getting old for this place.

I almost didn't get to go to the con. Again I tried eating a real dinner and spent from 3-5 losing that dinner. I was tired and still nauseous as hell but I thought, you can sit here feeling sorry for yourself or you can get in the car and go. It's at my university so it's just down the road a few miles.

I get there. ALL of our parking lots are filled. I finally luck into a spot and go on in wearing my lazy cosplay of my new Star trek Next Gen science officer t-shirt, black slacks/shoes and my Vulcan ears (which you can't see) and people lost their damn minds. HA! I was like wow, I spent 5 minutes on my cosplay and you all love it. The cosplay I spend $$$$ on and weeks of my life making I might hear one person say 'good cosplay.'

This is in both of our basketball courts (we have two in our sports center) so plenty of vendors. Most of it was funko and cards/models none of which I collect but I find some cool stuff and vendors I know. One woman had rosie and cherri pins from Hazbin which you almost never see those two ladies. I bought them.

There was one leather D&D shops (tons of dice and accessories) but I don't really cosplay anything like that but it was nice stuff and nicely priced too, enough to respect the work put in but not out of reach. If I played more I might have bought the leather D20 dice pouch.

I did find some holiday gifts and I got myself fun things like two cryptid/UFO tea towels (I'll never use), the pins, a 3 d printed book shelf decoration like a black cat and ghostbuster earrings from a vendor I think I've talked about before, selling everything for 3$ . She is someone I've bought from many times but she was whining to someone else about Tsubasacon and not going (I'll be at that one in October) because they are forcing her into the vendor's room and not the artist alley (which is cheaper). I'm an artist! It's because I buy my own charms and I'm thinking yes, lady that's exactly why. You buy charms and you put a freaking french hook on it. That's not really art. At rathacon I bought something from the person next to you at four times the price of your earrings because they DREW the art, made the acrylic and then the earring. That's art. You're crafts and that means the vendor room. (I do feel for her disappointment but on the other hand I do appreciate that Tsu is trying to keep the artists' alley restricted to people who do make their own stuff.)

I also bought a book, horror from an author who was supposed to be at my library's book fest and he said I wanted to be but my family was homeless for 9 months and we finally got a home that weekend. I took the book just because of that. And he wants to have me on his podcast for horror authors. I will wait a bit and think it over (maybe listen to his podcast first)

I wanted to talk with the old fellow who was connected with The Night of the Living Dead but when I mentioned I'd been to the museum back in PA he got weird about it. Maybe he's just not good with people. It was offputting regardless.

After a little over an hour I was roasting (another reason for my lazy cosplay, I know how hot our gyms are) and I just wasn't up to the panels. I did attempt the food trucks but who the heck booked these? We have six of them and two are shaved ice. Why would you do that? It's not like they're at opposite ends of huge fairs. Oh well. I did learn that there is a Gyro place in Gallipolis. I had their sandwich and after I ate that...I started feeling less nauseous so I guess most of the med is out of my system. I hope so because I'd like to sleep some.

and oh, I FINALLY remembered where I put that art (it was a stupid spot, like seriously stupid)

And then I got my damn real ID. So much for 42 days. It was 5. Now I have no excuse to come back down here. I should be glad I don't have to but I didn't get things cleaned or ordered etc etc. I think I will still come back. It's a lot of driving for nothing I know but...

My lazy cosplay (I hate my hair. I want to shave it off I swear)

Still the best name for a con, still tacked onto a tiny con in Athens that fights in a basketball court. Mostly my friends are running it (trying to rope me in but right now I'm quoting my health issues as why not but I will look for vendors for them).

Speaking of health issues, I could hardly move today, I'm so exhausted. I got there an hour later than planned but it worked out. I wanted to enter the raffles and this year...not a lot there that I was interested in anyhow. I didn't win anything this year (last year I won three things so it balances) and one of my friends said, 'watch me win the thing I didn't want but accidentally dropped my ticket into' And she did. She was going to give it to me (a merman illustration) but someone else wanted it more than me so I gave it to him. Karma owes me (and I don't mean the storm it served up, more on that later)

I didn't get to any of the talks because I knew I would never be able to get to them and manage to stay long enough to get to the raffle (in the future I will have to plan my one-day con trips well if I can't get my energy back). I did however get some fun stuff at the vendors.

I picked up A Shade of Winter from Henlo Press a paranormal mystery (some fool forgot her cheaters today. Not mentioning any names....) I've got the first book in several of their series already... which led me to a conclusion (more on that later)

I picked up a couple's earring set of Ozzie and Fizzarolli from Helluva Boss from Unicorn Massacres Designs. It's a cute set. I've bought from them before (artist is trans with a lot of trans rights stuff if you want to take a look).

From Dany Cat Designs I got some soap for me and for gifts. I still have one bar left over from last year. She didn't have any of the dice soap with her this year. I picked up Hades for myself along with Make It So

I said NO more wall art so naturally I bought two postcard sized bits of art from Cocomomo Art because her Hazbin stuff is probably the best I've seen for sale in the past several cons. She also recced a hopepunk queer anime, Promare. I need to find it.

Speaking of wall art, I should have walked past Amanda Scharf Illustration but her water colors were too damn pretty. Did I need a water color of Angel Dust? No. Do I now own one? What do you think? She had so many colors too. If the purple had only been a little richer....I went with dark blue.

There is an artist I get earrings from every con (and other vendors probably hate her) because she sells them for 3$ a pop vs what everyone else does (but I'm also betting she just buys the charms in bulk somewhere) I need to find out if some of my friends wear bigger earrings. Wish [personal profile] evil_little_dog wore earrings because she'd love half of these and sadly the artist doesn't do pins.

I did get some birthday/holiday gifts too. I'll see several of these vendors again in a few weeks at Final Boss con on my university. There was one person selling ITA bags which I need desperately for all my pins but honestly these looked like grocery bags for the same price as much more intricately done backpack styles so I skipped it (and I can make the banners for the pins myself if I take a minute to do it) I was glad I went. Got a few hugs from friends. Yeah I'm not a hugger but on the other hand it's nice to have people who are genuinely happy to see me.

I left the con and went to Kroger for cheese (this one has the fancy cheeses) All was well. I got my cheeses and some absolutely yummy olives that I'm sorry I didn't buy more of. Came out 15 minutes later and it looked cloudy. Five minutes later as I'm getting my Tim Horton's coffee rocket fuel to drive home on, it's even darker. By the time I go 2 miles to Avalanche pizza to pick up my death in a box (otherwise known as the skeletonwitch) it's BLACK. The manager is telling the staff to tell patrons the deliveries will be delayed because of the incoming storm.

I grab my pizza and beat feet. I don't get 5 miles out of town before it let loose. The wind was first, so strong I was literally knocked off the road three times. Then the rain came so hard I thought 'got to stop at the rest stop just up the road and ride this out.' It was raining SO hard I couldn't see the rest stop and missed it. I inched another mile down the highway to the red light where I know there is a gas station. Waited it out there for about 15 minutes. Thankfully my ebook held out because some one forgot to charge it (not mentioning any names) and it was down to 7%.

Luckily after that it was light rain or none all the way home. I'm glad I went. I wish I had energy that 2 hours didn't all but kill me. So that decision I came to at the con...for some damn reason there are a half dozen things I want to do on the 3rd (all in vastly different directions) Ohioana Book festival in Columbus (very late this year), the Gallipolis street steampunk festival, free comic book day, heartwoods mental health festival (in a Chillicothe park), a psychic fair in Logan, the mother's day glass sale in the Hocking Hills.

I decided not to go to the Book festival. My friend isn't going to be there. I haven't read 90% of the books I bought there last year (I'm working on 2 now).I need a new book like I need slapped. Worse, they'll be signed so I won't want to part with them. That doesn't help my space issue. I think I'm better off either doing the steampunk/comic book thing (they're in the same direction) or the glass/mental health fair (also in the same (but different) direction). Decisions Decisions.

Came home and started to watch the newly dropped Gaslight District pilot. Been looking forward to this. I haven't watched more than a few minutes (too tired) and I'm not sure I like the animation style but I'll need to see more.

And I took the librarian's advice and aimed to get there for the opening. Getting up at my usual work time should have put me there at that time but somehow I got a half hour behind this morning (looking at you bad GI tract) And the dumb thing is the parking lot is 456 John Marshall Dr and the student center is at 1 John Marshall Dr so I though I'd be walking 4 blocks (and I couldn't tell on google earth because I don't have my dad's skill with that thing)

They were literally across a service road from each other. Side eyeing WV's numbering system. It was a nice little con AND I'm going to talk to my university who hosts Final Boss con about what Marshall did recruitment wise (the difference is Marshall paid for the con as well as hosted but surely we can come to an arrangement with the con runners of our con) It was also free.

And I got talked into the cosplay contest because everyone loved my steampunk outfit. In nearly 40 years of cosplaying I've never entered a contest. I didn't win but it was fun (except for the standing and waiting. I'm no good at that).

There were 90 + vendors in theory but I know I didn't see half that many but to be fair some might have been at the library and I wasn't up for that walk. I did get a cool necklace made of walnut wood and some Hazbin pin/earrings but didn't spend much money (honestly the coffee and mini donut pop ups were nearly the biggest expense).

It was fun. Got there around 10:40 and left at 2, rather exhausted (I am started to feel my age) hit the comic book store and then off to the mall.

I know I've mentioned before that the Barboursville Mall is still 1989 in terms of importance to the community and the whole thing was PACKED. I don't even know why I went into Home Goods/TJ Maxx other than I can't resist it because I had to park by the damn road because every spot was taken. Inside, the line to check out was three turns deep, easily 50 people in this line (I'm like is it Black Friday already?) Good for them, I guess. They were actually quick and efficient.

Books a Million was equally jammed. There were teens all over the manga like locusts. I did find one I was looking for but then I got sucked into the graphic novel aisle and found a webtoon I've never heard of but it's some gay vampire thing set in Paris and I put the manga back for next trip (I'm two behind on that one anyhow so did I need a third book to get behind on?) I'm thrilled so many popular webtoons are getting hard copy print because I find webtoon hard to read (between light induced migraines and eye strain)

It was a good day. Oh and I forgot to mention first I saw a lightsaber 'usage' training session followed up by a fencing demonstration. I always wished my university had a fencing team. I think I would have enjoyed that

Yelp getting there just as the con opened worked. Of course I pulled into the furthest parking lot attached to the convention center (was I walking from home? Felt like it) but I crossed the con and got registered instantly and was then shunted into a line to...I had no idea (exhibition hall as it turned out so 45 minutes of standing there as my back is absolutely wrecking me.

This is literally the biggest exhibition room I've ever been in. Don't get me wrong I've been here before with Ohayacon before they went insane (illegal and mostly shut down) but they never had THIS much of it opened. I'm in heaven. While I was standing in line I alternated reading with calling Mom. 'Don't you spend money like it's monopoly money!' MooooooooM I'm nearly 60 years old. If I want to spend like a drunken sailor I will.

And I did. Holy crap. Do I need more Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel pins and keychains? Fuck no. Do I have them? Damn right. Do I have walls for more art? Fuck No. Did I buy wall art, tell me how was I supposed to pass up a 3-D art piece that is Cherri/Angel/Pentious in one view, Husk/Niffty/Alastor in another AND Charlie/Lucifer/vaggie in a third?

Bought fudge. They're from Pittsburgh. Now we're going there to get more fudge. I met up with my BFF from college and her child who was the one who wanted to come so bad. They dressed as Mimsy and Angel Dust. (I was Edalyn Clawthorne in her PJS)

That brings me to something I've noticed in the last year. It's only been a year since The Owl House has gone off air (well year and a half) and it's GONE from the dealers rooms. Now part of that is probably fear of Disney hunting them down and punishing them but I've noticed now more than ever fandoms fade FAST. Since Hazbin and Helluva Boss are hot there is stuff everyone. Very little anime was represented. pokemon was. Odd.

I only got to two panels, Thomas Lennon from Reno 911 (not that I planned on it but my friend was there because they went to the twilight panel (hard pass) and got front row seats and never left because after Thomas was the Hazbin Hotel cast panel which I wanted to go to as well. I was in the back and the Hazbin one was filling up so fast that I said leave me in the back. No doing. She came and dragged me to the front row (BtW Thomas was hysterical) and I'm glad she did. The cast was so much fun. The fans asking questions a wee bit less so. We're pressed for time just ask ONE question, no extraneous stuff. Everyone had extraneous stuff. Everyone is this is my first con thanks to Hazbin. Made me sad I wasn't in line to ask a question. 'hi I'm Dana this is my 38th year at cosplaying at cons....'

still the questions were fun and the cast was fun. Might even be in a picture. Certainly Alex Brightman has my face on his camera (hiya Beetlejuice!). Alex, Blake and Amir were absolutely hysterical and did the bulk of the answering. Lilli Cooper coming in a close second. Sam Haft (the man behind the music) was there, all shaky excited to see if Hazbin wins in the Billboard awards this week.

SO. MUCH. Hazbin cosplay. I'm sorry my Rosie isn't ready but someone (I didn't catch her dang it) cosplayed Susan which is SUCH a bit part but I'm glad someone did her. In many ways she's my spirit animal. Honestly get me a fox (fake) stole and a hat and I could use my eda outfit to play Susan. Here's susan (and the lady in red is Rosie who I want to cosplay)

.3

Someone I talked up everywhere. She crocheted her ENTIRE Fizzarolli outfit. It was stunning. (Pictures tomorrow. I am so very tired)

My friend's kid wanted to do the Hazbin Hotel group photo. We were too early so we did what she wanted: the pro wrestling they had going on. Things you might not know about me, I was crazy for WWF wrestling as a teen. Yes I knew it was fake and today I learned it looks even MORE fake in person. These were C lister wrestlers dressing up as superheroes to fake it out. I got to see Deadpool taking on Syndrome and Wreck It Ralph. Ghost Face and Captain Kirk went mano a mano (Kirk won) and how geeky are we all hearing like two seconds of music with 'Get Over Here!' imposed on it for all of us to scream as one 'SCORPION!' (Mortal Kombat) who duked it out with several others I can't even remember. and lastly there was a battle royale with the women, Rogue, Spidergirl (Gwen) Domino, Poison Ivy and someone with 1930s music and what might be a baseball outfit (Lucy?) that I didn't know. (Ivy won)

We were going to go to the Hazbin singalong but it was PACKED in a hot tiny room and it was now 630 so I said I'm out. good call because soon my knee did give out. If I do this again I'll get the attached hotel so I can go and rest as needed. The only panel I didn't go to that I might have wanted to was George takai's but I've seen him before.

My barista back home was performing music here. Said hello. He's probably wondering who is that old crazy woman.

the only bad note (other than my pain) was I was directed to the wrong elevator to the parking lot (I KNEW I hadn't seen that Starbucks on the way up) Luckily someone knew that I needed to cross the parking garage and bingo there was my car.

Came to the casino, had burnt ends at Brew Brothers. I should have gotten the ala cart sides (but didn't want to pay that for freaking beans or fries) because those burnt ends were basically an appetizer. Sigh. I wanted more but I left, went back to the same slot machine, doubled my money again, went back to Guy's place for an appetizer to top off that tiny meal. Calamari frito miso. Worth every damn penny (I did pass on their 14$ cannoli) they even thinly sliced lemons and deep fried them too and gave me the juiciest charred lemon to squeeze all over that yummy yummy calamari. Mmmm tentacles.

Now I'm in the hotel with my leg and back suing me for divorce. Still all in all a great day.

Advent Joy

Write down something positive that happened today. Ha my ENTIRE post is this

No tea today. I'll drink that tisane tomorrow evening

Unless you've always stayed at the hosting hotel you've probably seen the striptease. You stumble back to your car, covered in con funk, sweating body parts off under your cosplay and you start stripping it off right there at the car. The hardest part is trying to get pants on under your skirt without carrying everything back to the hotel/convention center bathroom. I don't always change but if I'm going out to eat I do (mostly because I do not want to trash my expensive cosplay)

I almost didn't go today. At midnight my phone rings. It's my parents. I thought 'my uncle died.' Dad starts with 'your mother' and I thought Mom Died! No but her bad foot (she already lost one toe) has a toe that lost it's skin and started swelling out of the blue (It was bugging her some this summer.) Should I go to the ER? Yes please. Can't I just call my podiatrist in the morning? Yes but you probably won't get past her front office people (because you never can any more). She decides to wait (so you call me for my medical opinion and midnight and ignore it). Sure enough she didn't get in this morning and went to her GP who DID squeeze her in. She has antibiotics and an appt to see podiatrist and to get an x-ray next week. I'm unhappy about this. I am a big proponent of hitting this shit with IV antibiotics (like I made her do last year with the other foot and there's still 5 toes over there). So here's hoping this is enough.

She told me to go this morning so I did. I almost regretted it because the wait was insane. I didn't preregister because of my health and the preregistered line was just as bad. 1 1/2 hours to get inside. I did like the dealer's room. It was odd though. For an anime con it was more fantasy, see it at a renn fest sort of thing. Just a couple people with Hazbin/Helluva Boss stuff...and almost NO other animes I knew. Pokemon still everywhere. I do not know why I didn't see more anime stuff. One person had their art as wall scrolls and beach towels but no where near as good as the artist I know (sadly in Spain where shipping doubles the cost) There was some D&D stuff (no dice goblin back the fuck away. This one young man was saying i have so many dice. Sweetie, Mama Con here has been doing this for 40 years, you have no idea how many I have)

I did get some pins and wall art I SWORE I wouldn't buy. The one big piece was also offered on metal which looked amazing but tripled the price (and if I'm getting into that price range I'd rather it be limited run stuff). I did get one Angel Dust that looked like an oil painting (The Vaggie one was outstanding but I'm not a giant fan of hers) but it was 3-D printed. I had NO idea you could do that and make it look like painted art. It was cool, had to have it.

I said I wouldn't buy a t-shirt. they had only ONE t-shirt vendor. I bought a t-shirt (hangs head in shame) I couldn't pass it by it says The Uncanny Valley Society. You'd never know we're not people.

On the other hand, I was incredibly disappointed in the panels. I mean they were BAD. I only got to two and the only thing worth it was the time off my feet. The steampunk one was just lists of things (musicians, anime, tv shows) and the owl house one was a group of friends telling us who they like and why (which okay IS a popular thing on Youtube too but I couldn't figure out who cares...like I don't expect you to engage if I list it for my Fannish 50 but it's not me doing it at a con. Given how many people bailed I wasn't alone in not caring (yes I bailed too but it was 530 and I was done for)

I did pick up the webtoon Lackadaisy in the traveling Manga Library and read about half of it (time) Betty has been telling me to give it a look. (going to see if I can talk the library into it) I did like it, 1920 speakeasies in St Louis and the characters are cats. I like Viktor (would really like to slap Rocky into next week)

Overall it was a good day.

Today was all about Costco and dealing with the deadness of my bad leg (I can feel none of it from thigh down today so it's fun walking on it) so instead let's have fun. I have the promised pictures from Key City Steampunk plus a ton of stories and art to share.

Pictures first they're hiding under here )

And now on to the stories

all the stories )
cornerofmadness: (Default)
Today was the last day. 6 AM my GI tract decided to play up. Fantastic. I still have 2 hours to go back to sleep. My body is like yeah nope. At 730 I gave up, took the suitcases out to the car and went to breakfast. After coming back, dressing and emptying out the car, I went to the first talk: page to stage. I thought it was about play writing. Nope. Costume design and making by two people, husband and wife team who does it for the Atlanta theater, the glimmerglass theater and several around D.C. It was the first time I've seen two pros presenting that topic. Absolutely gorgeous stuff, even if it's something outside my skill set. He did designs for The Cunning LIttle Vixen and I will say the costuming was SO good I knew what animals they were before he even said (and told him so. He was pleased).

From there I went to the 'radio show' production which was silly fun and funnier to the Gen X crowd than the younger I would guess. (written by Gen Xers)

And I went to the food truck...regret. Well I had wanted to go to Dobbin House for food but dismissed it last night as going out of my way too late in the day. However after food, it's not even 1 pm and I realize that the only thing left I want to see is at 2:30. Almost two hours away. And that was the broom making thing but since it had no price tag I realize it's not US making it (because those have $ value for the supplies of course) so I thought meh, I could look up how to do it on YT if I really wanted that. The other two I would have liked are people I know and have seen plenty so I'm like you had 4 hours sleep. You're tired. Go. Home.

So for the price of what the food would have been at Dobbin I do regret the food truck. I should have just packed it in gone to Dobbin, over to the tourist trap 'tourist info center' to get some postcards and then go home. Oh well. It's no big deal. And going home WAS the right thing. I was so tired at the beginning I knew it would have been bad if I had waited 2 hours. I have NO idea what was going on on the turnpike, high traffic and SO MANY people going 50 in the passing lane (It's a 70 mph highway) took a half hour off my trip and several of us nearly crashed into their slow asses. And then the last oasis on the turnpike where I planned to eat had closed all the food except burger king. Ew.

In the future, especially if I realize that the friday events don't start until the afternoon, I might just arrive friday and then stay til Monday so I don't have to drive exhausted and I don't have to do the check out day elevator fight. I'm getting old for this.

And oh, how did I forget? There was a vaudeville show last night. A woman singing in Italian, a juggler and a strong woman who nailed a nail into her nose with a bedazzled hammer and she bent three skillets into juggling pins for him.

Dancing until midnight is much easier in my glass slippers and flapper dress. Now on to midnight cannolis to unwind. Today was another good day at the con. The only hiccup today was the hotel pulled the same thing the one for the Loveland Frogman fest. And I get it, I do. They're not used to completely sold out hotels and the kitchen can't handle that many breakfasts and since this is a made to order you have to pay for breakfast (ever notice the more expensive the hotel is the less likely you're getting a breakfast?) they went with a buffet. I get it. I also get that the price of their crap buffet cost more than me eating at Perkins for three days getting exactly what I want. So off to Perkins to reclaim that free breakfast I won (it's less than 2 miles from here, not really a problem)

I did make most of the panels that I wanted to, my friend's ghost thing (which I learned about Wabasha caves, used in the prohibition as a speakeasy, even had a dance floor. I feel a vampire story coming on), the werewolf one turned out to be a game and a couple of the younger teen boys were making it weird before it even started so I noped into the weird cocktail lecture. Caught half of Victor and the Bully again.

I got even more gifts for everyone today and then saw one I need to look for tomorrow. One vendor has hand made a wooden Alastor radio from Hazbin Hotel. Speaking of Alastor I saw him (got a pic) and Mimsy (she was too tired and sagging for pics) I can't wait for you to see all the pictures I got (Monday)

I've already got most of the stuff packed up because the elevators are so slow. I will roll two of them out when I go for breakfast and leave the light stuff in case I have to walk it down 5 flights (Last steampunk con that was almost necessary).

I am going to talk to my PCP when I get home. I'm still easily exhausted. I had to come back a couple times (some of that was sensory overload). I'm not 100% solid it's simple aging. Ever since my hysterectomy I have had no energy.

I plan to drive home late tomorrow.

Oh and I forgot to share the story I wrote for [personal profile] spikesgirl58's 6 word challenge. You can find it

Day 1

Know what's hard? Dancing for an hour to a rock band in one inch heeled boots with a knee like mine while wearing a corset and being closer to an elder than a youth. Fun as hell though. The convention is good, really good. Multiple dealer rooms, lots of talks and how-tos. And music. lots of music.

I've already forgotten the name of the first performer. The second and third are both from England. Madam Misfit was fun but not really my sort of music. You can hear some of hers here

The last group an alt rock duo from London was exactly my style. Loved them. They came out dancing with us several times. Mom's like make new friends at the con. Does me dancing with a guy young enough to be my kid to this song count?

I bought a couple cool things, something for a holiday gift, and an amazing amethyst skull that had no price tag and they're like 40$. SOLD. No way this was that cheap. It fills my hand and one side is a carved skull and the other is raw crystal. It's amazing. Later she's like...that is probably more but I said 40$ so... yes it's a steal and I'm taking it. I got chocolate from sweet steam (who hasn't been in Cincinnati since covid) and now they have hot chocolate. I got earl grey hot and six demon bag. We sat there quoting Big Trouble in Little China as we drank samples.

I'll hit the vendors again tomorrow. I made one pass and I bought things I was sure wouldn't be there tomorrow. I also sat thru my friend Leanna Renee Hieber's talk on Gothic and Noir fiction, really good. I need to buy one book but only one. I'm going to be good, right? I found a new to me author so hers will be the one.

Tomorrow I don't plan to leave the hotel. Today I went out into the blinding rain to go to the seminary museum. It was worth it. First though I went to Perkins, haven't seen that chain in forever and they had a kid's charity. Pick a rubber duck, win a prize. i won another breakfast. Sunday seems reasonable for that.
As for the museum it was 4 floors. I even attended a short presentation. one floor was general battle stuff (and how the seminary building played a role), next floor was about the hospital that was set up in it (both floors talked about the ziegler kids who were living in the seminary as their parents worked there, the other two floors were about the seminary leaders and their abolitionist ways and of course, the enslaved people themselves.

Since that was over by noon and this didn't start til 2, I went to lunch at Sheetz (Needed gas) because people rave about it. I could have gone to a sitdown restaurant for the cost of this sad hot dog and onion petals. eye roll.

From there I went to the dedicated movie theater for this hotel complex. They have so many horrors I'd like to see but what I did see was Deadpool and Wolverine. It was very vulgar, very violent, and pure enjoyment. Loved it. Wolverine and Gambit have been my favorites for like 30 years + and all the cameos!!

The only negative is this bed. My hotel room is nice but these beds are low to the ground, hard as a rock where they aren't broken down. I'm getting this room rather cheaply (if you can call 170$ cheap) If I was paying the usual 240$/night I'd be pretty pissed over these crap beds. Also I'm catty corner to the ice machine. Who the fuck was getting ice at 4 AM??

Hoping the trip here does not augur how the weekend shall go. I started out an hour late because I needed to change my contacts (they're monthly) and I hadn't last week because of the funeral. However they're missing. I know they were at my parents place but they are NOT in the toiletries bag. At all. Nor in the closet, any bathroom drawer, any of my bags in my bedroom or any of my bedroom doors. I literally have NO idea where they could be because they should NOT be out of the bag. Thankfully if we never do find them I'm only out 2 months worth of them. I am mystified and annoyed.

My car was down a quart of oil. I'm concerned it's burning oil a lot lately. It's almost a decade old so.... Get that topped off and off I go. It's a very easy drive across PA because it's all turnpike. I put in the new to me (It's one of their first) Abney Park cds and it was weird because just as I passed the turn off for the cemetery we just put my uncle to rest at and the song End of Days comes on....

The Drive was good Until 100 miles to my turn off. When the heavens opened up. For 40 miles it was blindly bad with rain (and very much a hydroplane accident waiting to happen) the next 60miles was rain and fog but not super hard, just drizzly.

By now I'm tired. Like very tired. So I go to the hotel's restaurant which is giving 10% off to the steampunk con so that was nice. The short rib grilled cheese was nice. My room is nice. And once I settled in, I saw on FB two of my Airship Athena friends (from back home) are here too! Didn't know that. So I'll be able to have someone to talk to on occasion.

Too bad Mom couldn't come. She was but obviously isn't up to it now.

Tomorrow I plan to go to the seminary museum as I've never seen it and maybe to a movie (this place has a dedicated theater. It has like 6 horror films too bad I don't have more time) before the stuff really kicks off tomorrow afternoon. However the shenanigans have already started tonight even though it doesn't technically begin until tomorrow afternoon. It should be fun.

Not to mention it was also free comic book day and Derby Day (but I was so unmoved by that this year I still haven't even looked up who won).

I'm going to be honest, when they held Final Boss con at my university last year (in July) I wasn't there but didn't expect much of it. I talked to the showrunners last year as well (at a different event) and suggested doing it DURING a semester as we're a commuter college for the most part. They were already hoping to and so they did this year. I went expecting nothing.

I got a filled parking lot, people everywhere and two entire basketball courts filled with vendors. Color me pleasantly surprised. Shockingly no The Owl House Stuff but I did find one vendor with some Hazbin Hotel pins and got me some Huskerdust. There was a dice guy I've seen elsewhere but the geek boys were thicker than flies in a stable so I wasn't going to get into that mess.

I saw the author I bought from in Ohioana Book fest and we talked a while. Got some Christmas gifts and hit the food trucks (dear roach coach, Lo Mein sauce is more than you pouring on soy sauce (with rosemary for some fucking reason) your raspberry spicy sauce for dipping the rangoons was delicious so you do understand sauce on some level (or bought this somewhere) I dumped the left over raspberry onto the lo mein to cut the saltiness.

Then it was off to free comic book day. People everywhere. I think they gave away a lot of stuff but I got several I wanted. There was a mystery pull in my pull pile and I'm like did I do that? They say yes. I THINK it's something I saw on Blue Sky, some gothic thing. I took them because why not.

Then it was on to home goods where it was STILL Black Friday level crowds (mother's day I guess) with literally over 50 people in line (I was there 40 minutes I swear) but I found the new towel organizer I wanted for the bathroom (mine is broken and there is no storage in my bathroom) and a new soap dispenser (Stitch from Lilo and Stitch), some rose turkish delight because I make bad choices and a two foot long cement triceratops garden sculpture that I said couldn't come home with me but somehow was in my cart at the end of the day (and the cashiers tried to steal him). Yes pictures, but not yet because it's raining like I should be building an arc. The floodles along Route 2 are so big and long standing water plants are moving in and a family of ducks was on it.

Since I forgot my reading glasses on the grading pile, I went to my usual restaurant and got my usual pineapple and shrimp tacos and they were having 5$ margaritas for Cinco de Mayo weekend (watermelon thank you) I then went to booksamillion, sampled a new manga and got the unbirthday cake mocha (which no lie the last quarter was pure hershy's syrup) to let the tequila, sugar and caffeine battle it out on the way home.

Rathacon

For anyone new to my blog, Rathacon is a tiny pop culture con in Athens OH and at this point my friends are the ones running the whole shebang. I am not up for being there all day yet but I was there half the day at the airship table which was...not the airship, not really. MK had her Audrey II stuff all over the table, showing off her skills (It was super popular) she's working for small theaters this day creating props.

The reality is the three leaders of our airship are gone now and we were talking about maybe using a new winery (whose owners are also steampunk) as a meeting place maybe once a month to see if there is a way to become more cohesive again. MK is a few years older than me and we enjoy chatting. My other friend MFK was there with her witchy stuff and the vendors were...about the same as always. I bought something from an indie comic book creator (who's enby) and a book from an indie publisher Henlo Press I'm going to keep an eye out for their open calls.

For me the vendors were a touch heavy on fan art of which I need NOTHING. Slap me into next week if I buy more. I did find a solitary vendor who had Hazbin Hotel stuff Unicorn Massacres (it's not on their web page yet at least the search doesn't show any) The angel dust one was a bit cheesy cakey so I only got a sticker and a book mark. No Sir Pentious for Flippy. And the Alastor art was cool but it was Radioapple and I don't ship it. the Chaggie print was cute (but not in sticker form sadly)

I got a lot of cool pics and I won two of the raffle items, the Moth Man Squishy and an Amigurumi of the Abominable Snow Man and his Pine Tree (I need to name him).

I had never worn my black lace shirt with my bluish corset before. Um...the results were MUCH bustier than anticipated. Multiple men asked me for selfies with them (which has NEVER happened before) and there's an old dude who has been the photographer for the con (and our steampunk events) for YEARS. He has never taken a photo of me in a decade. Today with my tits half out, he didn't just take a pic, he had me do a photo shoot. Honestly, men.

I left early to go to the Abney Park concert only to get home and find out that while Flippy thought the ticket was in the upcharge for the signed CD (for my upcoming B-day) it wasn't. You had to pay a dollar more. We're all equally unimpressed by this (honestly this band makes such dumb business choices...) Oh well. I'm exhausted anyhow.

Also I met my friends at Sol for Cuban food before I went to the con.
