And what a first day of spring it's been. It's 75 degrees. I went to my first book club meeting at the new bookstore (run by one of my former students) where I got them interested in my book, These Haunted Hills and it was a fun book club where we only had to read 'a green book' and talk about it. Next month is an assigned book. To be honest I don't really go to book groups because I rarely like the genres we read. We'll see how this goes. I did find out a major mystery writer I like will be there in May. Yay.

And I really really need to read the specs on fan merch I buy. I always don't do that and I always get surprised often in a bad way (like my itty bitty husk/angel things) However this time the surprise is in a good way. I got the Valentine's day cards for Hazbin because I liked the art. I thought I was getting a few art cards. I got a damn box of stationary. Wow.


And holy hell episode 8 of The Amazing Digital Circus dropped tonight. It was amazing. It's up there in second place for me. I'll have to watch it again and I'll have more thoughts about it later.

Today also saw the passing of Chuck Norris and Nicholas Brendan who played Xander on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In watching Buffy recently I realize I dislike Xander even more now than I did back then. That said, I am sorry that Nicholas passed so relatively young.

And I got some writing done plus I have a new open call for you this weekend, another one with big name anchors and pro pay about were creatures. I was spitballing ideas with evil little dog tonight. We'll see what happens.

The day started with a nightmare. I dreamed I was in my dad's workshop in his basement screaming at him that no one liked him and he was crying. Mom was yelling at me why did you do this and I said he was hitting my SiL and I lost it (to be clear he would never do that).

I go to work shocked everyone actually showed up except a few trapped by flooding (ah spring). It was going well...and then I got two emails (I wasn't even going to look at them but I needed to get any late submissions of work due today) about more cheating. And it IS more, in a different class. One has only heard about the girls bragging about it and doesn't want in trouble and the other came to speak to me since she was on campus and she said the same thing they're bragging about it. She doesn't know the student's name but from her description I know exactly who it is (another athlete)

Since I didn't catch them and there's no proof, I can't kick it up the chain. I DID tell the dean and I plan on talking to the heads of their departments to get some help. Not saying a word to them, just making them all put their phones in a box. They get them back at the end of the exam. No warning. Let's see what happens then. And other one hasn't been to lab...ever. Just has excuses and asks to make them up. Guess that's going away.

So now I'm an hour late getting home. Then the GI track says yeah you ain't leaving the bathroom. Once that fit was pitched I started getting ready and my sugar crashes out. Eye roll. Rocket tried to get in the bedroom and hide. FINALLY I'm out of the house. It's now after 230 and I haven't had lunch.

I have to go to Jackson to get a book from the library before it's sent back so I'll go to Sonic's. Get there. It's 240 and there are NINE cars in line. I nope out, stop for KFC and then go to Tim Horton's, the new one and this is the third time the guys on the window can't figure out a drink order (caramel machiatto, it's your standard fing menu) so I might be done with this place.

In the mean time the gas station's are changing their prices by 50 cents so I get my library book, race back across town to where they haven't got that message yet. Off I go. It's now 3 pm. I was supposed to BE here by now.

Luckily it was an easy drive and this Best Western has been recently redone. It's nice, clean...and the bathroom is an afterthought. You come in the door and immediately is a curtain pretending an alcove is the closet (at least there's a half dozen hangers not that I need them for 1 day) and the bathroom is SO small the toilet and tub nearly touch and the sink is in another part of the room outside the bathroom door.... BUT it has a fridge and microwave which the last two expensive hotels I've stayed at did not manage to have.

Everyone and their grandma is in the pool. Glad I didn't plan on that but this place is...well let's just say I love living in the country but I DO miss having options. I had researched, as I always do, best places to eat and planned to go to Dolsot Bistro as there is NO Korean food within 60 miles of me. I get to the strip mall and in it side by side is Korean, Chinese, Boba place, Indian place, juice joint and Phoenican/middle east food and a huge stand alone Mexican place. WOW. AND in the 2 miles from my hotel to hear it was nothing but food and strip malls including three other Korean places and a Greek place right across the street.

I got some goonmandu (fried dumplings that were amazing) and tofu doenjang dolsot (fine cut tofu, basically a sweetish red miso, veggies and a lightly fried egg on the rice. man crispy rice is a different, tastier experience (yes I'm not meant to have rice but...this is once in like 2 years for me as far as Korean food goes). Also they had a sliver of their pancakes on the kimchi tray and man I wish that app wasn't the price of dinner or I'd gotten that. It was amazing.

In theory I get breakfast free here and they have the daily specials written out. Every day is the same thing....ha. If it sucks we share a parking lot with the Waffle House.

And if something goes sideways with the festival I'll just drop down to Cincinnati and do fun stuff.

As I said, I canceled school today and went down to the library to get books/return same, cashed in my Mexican restaurant freebie (another free soda, luckily it could be tea) and had my mammogram. The tech was the first grad from the program back in 2003 and I mentioned teaching them and she gave me things to think about that I hadn't. Like how could I forget they do enemas of barium? Or that I personally have used them IN surgery? I want them to know it's more than taking x-rays and this is WHY they need to know anatomy.

My psychiatry visit was virtual and I guess I'll be needing a new one. I like her and she swears she's staying with the hospital system but her husband had to relocate to FL and all our visits have to be virtual. Yeah like she's really going to stay. Ah well

When it looked like we weren't getting the snow they said I packed up and went to Point Pleasant to bum around. I will admit the coffee grinders coffee house isn't my favorite (and dudes DO NOT put the coffee of the day at some side table. Put that near the register. I totally wouldn't have bought that) got writing done. At this point Capitol One's bot texts me again about Best Buy trying to get payment for their protection membership pushed thru (this is 200$, I don't want it and this will become important)

I go to the Mason Jar antique store/country store/shit shop and I find the best thing ever. Star Trek salt and pepper shaker. I don't even haggle over the price. I ALMOST did for two other items (I am not good at this mind you) One was a pressed glass pitcher and two goblets of BLACK glass and the uranium glass juicer (both were 35$ each. Both remained in the store).



I spotted a blue glass horse bookend and thought evil_little_dog will marry me if I get her that for her birthday. I swoop over. It's 60$ for one book end. They don't have the other. I decided I didn't really wanna marry ELD anyhow.

I waltz down the street (with my ST shakers) to the Point Pleasant Trading Company which specializing in cryptid shit. (btw cryptids are absolutely saving PP from oblivion. there were tourists everywhere. In Jan. In the cold.) They had absolutely gorgeous Mothman/Flatbush Monster/Loveland Frogman/Big Foot t-shirts. I don't need a 35$ t-shirt(the number of the day is 35) They had an amazing cardigan with mothman and the silver bridge. No Dana you DO NOT need a 60$ cardigan. But it's in my size. NO. Bad Dana. And the upstairs was rocking. they've added sound to the Black Light Mothman Experience Indoor Mini Golf (Why will NO ONE play with me? WHY)

I bought nothing there and crossed the river back into Oh and headed to Remo's this absolutely terrifying local treasure of a hot dog stand inside a (collapsing) house. Got lunch. (because I forgot my freebie thing for the Mexican place) Went to the library to get more books for popsugar because I can absolutely read this many at once, right? (ha) I did not go to the Lego exhibit they have right now. It opened this week and had 20000000 kids in it (well it felt like it at any rate)

Went to the boba hut. My credit card is declined. Naturally. Because I'm going to Aldi's next. I know why. Remember that Best Buy thing? Yeah so Capitol One decides OMG red alert (in spite of me telling them it's fine two days ago when I THOUGHT I had canceled that membership). They texted me we'll close this card and send you a new one. I'm now steaming. At least I have another card.

I hit Aldi's. Get cheese I don't need. I don't even remember which ones. Got some frozen things I don't need (like I needed cheese) go home with my boba. I'm a mile from home when one bursting boba wings up that straw at mach 1 and straight into my vocal cords and pops. Mango liquid shoots down my bronchial tubes and like any good asthmatic tube, they immediately clench up and fill with mucus. By the time I park, I'm crackling and wheezing like I've pneumonia and in need of a trach. every time I cough I taste mango. How much fluid was in one tiny boba?

I get inside, deal with Best Buy and this time it went thru because I got the survey of sadness. Why did you leave us? I call up Capitol One and I'm coming in hot now. We'll close this card. No chucklefuck you won't. I explain 4 times what happened, told them every charge that should be on that card this week. Those aren't fraudulent? NO. In theory I can use this card again. If I can't heads will be on pikes.

Okay so it's not really a thing in America and mostly all we did today was lie about watching British mysteries and being thankful no one else was in the house!

Title: There'll Be a Hot Time in Old Town Tonight

Summary: Angel is hosting his first Sinsmas party as an overlord. He wants to ease his nerves about it with a dinner for friends but with rival overlords and scrapping turf war wannabes, will his party be a success or a dismal failure?

Rating: teen and up

Author Note - Written for spikesgirl58’s six words challenge. The words were Form, Illness, Session, Government, Lunch,& Relief and for lyrical bingo for the prompt of Pre-1900 song. I chose There'll Be a Hot Time in Old Town Tonight by Bessie Smith.

I also wrote this a holiday gift for my friend JK. It was meant to be Pentious centric. Angel was having none of it. It’s part of my Angel overlord AU. It’s a stand alone (but feel free to read the rest of the series if you want) All you need to know is Valentino is dead (Angel killed him) and Angel’s taken over Val’s empire with the help of his brother. The couple’s outfit Angel and Husker are wearing at the party (not to mention their dance moves) were inspired by Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, especially this dance

I had such high expectations of getting the cards out, the gifts, grading all the things etc. etc. I should have realized it was no attainable.

I need to keep better records over the year as I tend to buy gifts at cons and festivals and now there is way too much and I got so flustered I left my house to reset at the coffee shop. The post office was fucking nuts because they have ONE person worker (and he's explaining how he is the only one because of the stupid) There is another woman but all she did was ask are you picking up or dropping off. No idea why she couldn't work the other register.

Also a monster storm is coming so like everyone else I go to the store. I get a rotissiere chicken because if I DO lose power I have a whole chicken to pick at in the cold. (bread and peanut butter too) CVS and the dollar store was just as bad and then the bank tells me they no longer have a coin counter. What am I going to do with all these coins? Sigh.

It took until 7 pm to get all the grades done except my two research students (tomorrow's worry) I am fielding are you going to round that up? Yes I am but your 70.2 isn't rounding to a fucking 73%. Sorry, you didn't do nearly well enough to pass.

I also managed to aspirate my lunch and have been coughing up crap off and on for hours since my lungs are pissed at me.

I did however managed to avoid spoilers for The Amazing Digital Circus's episode 7 drop and got to see the episode. More about that maybe on Tuesday.

Notes:This is set in the late 1970s which is currently, from the old notes up on fandom wiki, the time period in which both Valentino and Arackniss died. So I gave hell that same 70s vibe and this would be when Valentino is just building his empire and what Angel’s role is in it. And his first meeting with his brother after Arackniss died. I am sticking with Giovanni for Arackniss’ living years name as the old notes have him as a Jonathan.

Content warning – Angel’s family is homophobic so there are references to that along with time period appropriate history for Angel’s living years in the 1930s and 40s.

So much was going on today I felt it deserved it's own separate post.

I was going to share pictures that have been on my mind of my great grand mothers but for the life of me I can't remember what file folder they're in and it's been too busy of a day to find it.

Speaking of which, sorry I owe lots of comments. I am just slammed. I will get to them. Promise.

Last night ysabetwordsmith shared an article on New study: Viewing art in galleries 'immediately' reduces cortisol levels, boosts health which I found fascinating and I wonder what else art can do. With that in mind I did go to the Witch Walk art trail in Athens tonight (I was on the fence) Here is the facebook event post

Sounded fun. and it was...but would have been better if I didn't have to drive an hour to get there because it wasn't quite as expected. The Dairy Barn is open with free snacks, pizza and hot apple cider for us (the Dairy barn is now the arts center) and they had environmental booths set up and tons of stuff for the kids. There was an accordion player and an art scavenger hunt.

And Ora Anderson Trail turns out to be a one mile trail...up a hillside...through the wetlands...in the dark. Lit by luminieres. So being the I can do this person I am, I grab my cane and up I go. In the dark. (and OMG people why do so many of you need flash lights half blinding me. I can tell who has never been in the woods in the dark before).

I was expecting a different kind of art. It was basically upcycled stuff (tires, other detritus) turned into 'scary things' It was basically a horror trail with no one popping out at you. At the top of the hill was a theater, a puppet show on offer (sort of the big puppets you kinda wear) Well puppets are at least part of the Sicilian day of the dead (or so I read. I am not Sicilian) Also I hate puppets. I turned around and went back and that's when things got weird

I'm not more than a few yards from Puppet central when I feel someone behind me. Not surprising it's well attended but it's just me and a young man in all black with the barista hipster look going on, short beard, slightly longer hair. I invite him to go around me as I am slow with a cane going downhill in the dark. He does but around the next bend he is behind me again. And again. And when invited he doesn't go around me. When I can finally see the lights of the dairy barn, he isn't there. But I have to go through one more dark woods spot and there he is behind me again. It was strange (I feel a horror story coming on)

Quite a few of my coworkers have October birthdays so we always go out to dinner to celebrate them. Went to Arch and Eddie's for the first time in a year. Definitely a different app menu from Sixth Sense (Like I said, two different owners now) Also something new, two fried chicken sliders with siracha sauce, broccoli slaw and general Tso's sauce. REALLY damn good actually. As was the raspberry whip (whipped cream vodka, pineapple juice and raspberry puree.
