I'm struggling to maintain control over my reading of my dwircle. Allocating more resources to it (mostly time), not optimal. And thus I've decided that I'm going to trim down the number of communities I'm in, and the number I'm following.

Because, when I looked at my profile, I'm a member of 78, and following 147. Not all of these are highly active (and some are dormant), but there are several highly active ones I've been scrolling past and feeling vaguely uncomfortable about the fact that I'm not engaging at all (there are others, like [community profile] common_nature, where I lurk, but very much appreciate what people are sharing). Today's goal is to get the membership at or below 50, and the subscription at or below 100. More than that is for future me.

I figure that throwing half an hour at it now is going to serve future me well.

I got the title to my car in the mail, so that's that, it is officially paid off and now it's mine.

Weird.

I had to take it in to get it serviced yesterday, and at the dealership, after all the back and forth about what was being done (and don't even get me started, I was supposed to get a recall taken care of and I didn't and I'm still peeved), it came up somehow that is is paid off, and I got a faint look of surprise from the woman behind the counter, perhaps because I do not look like someone who should have been able to pay off a $15k loan in 3 years and change.

In her defense, I suppose, I was wearing my favorite jeans (holes in the pockets and left leg), one of my favorite shirts (HOLES), the sort-of-ugly sneakers I got online because they don't kill my feet when I have to stand on the concrete in the lab, and I had the (broken zipper, but still serviceable) messenger bag with me, my hair swept up in the sort of bun we call "I need to wash this and I'm going to do that tonight but until then perhaps this will hide the worst of the sins".

It makes me laugh when I think about how I am doing, financially (pretty well) vs how I am perceived (as a horrible goblin who must be horribly broke). Clothes get destroyed in the lab even with a lab coat (don't even get me started, truly), and so at some point you give up and there are "lab clothes" and "home clothes". Lab clothes are the ones with mysterious bleach stains. Home clothes haven't been wrecked yet.

I do have some shirts that are "home shirts", in the sense that they don't have anything horribly wrong with them yet. "Home pants" for the summer are shorts, because I cannot wear them in the lab, and "home shoes" are the wedge sandals I have come to be fond of, for the same reason.

I think sometimes about dressing better, making more of an effort, and then it's like — well. I'm comfortable, and reasonably happy; I have outfits that I wear for Fancy Stuff when needed (including, yes, actual formalwear), and anyway, I'm Old and Very Married and Max is also a horrible goblin, so.

(Besides, it's fun to make someone squirm after they're shitty to me for assumptions they made about my class and disposable income based on how I was dressed.)

This week at work was another that's not worth talking about, but the gist of it is that my cofounder realized that if something didn't change I was probably going to walk away, permanently, and so I am on a different project for the time being. Thank God.

I didn't get to bed until almost 2am last night, and I was up until 2:30 with the sort of nebulous, ill-formed anxiety that gnaws at me a few times a year. What if...

Lately it's been what if the people you love are actually tired of you but are too kind to say so, which is certainly — mmm. A THOUGHT.

This was more or less assuaged when Maximo woke up, about an hour after I did (because despite falling asleep around 2:30AM, I was still awake by 8:30AM), and immediately rolled over to show me something silly he'd meant to share before he fell asleep the night before. At least one person loves me and is not tired of me, and that's enough to pop the anxiety bubble, mostly.

His mom called around 9:30 to talk about logistics. She and his sister are planning to come out for the first part of August — probably the 7th (arriving that evening) through the 12th. This should be fun, minus the part where I have two tabletop games I would rather not move in that same span of time. Alas, alack, etc, etc.

(It'll be fine; this trip is short-notice and I don't think I'm expected to entertain anyone or do anything at all.)

After he got off the phone, got up, went to the farm stand (for fun, mostly), then did annoying Car Stuff (getting gas, etc), ran to the grocery store...

It was a bunch of tiny fiddly errands, most of which were fine, but which all together were a lot. The Nebulous Anxiety started coming back around that time, too, which was just — eugh.

Came home, put everything away, and laid down on the sofa for about an hour. During that time, Max's cat came and loafed upon me and drooled, purring. It's hard to feel like you are full of nebulous anxiety when you have a large fat white cat drooling upon you, so.

Got up, did some various and sundry small things, and — well, yeah.

Texted Amanda and Sharon, asked if they wanted to hang out. Got the affirmative, went ahead and picked up Chinese and drove to meet them. Two episodes of DS9, one episode of Game Changer, and that was that. I did get ribbed a bit about "being on the phone" during DS9, but I am —

I can say this here, because neither of them pay attention to my Dreamwidth (genuinely, I don't know that they know I have one), but: God, I am so tired of "Star Trek".

I pay enough attention to the plots, anyway, that when I inevitably get asked if I saw [x], I can go, "yes, and then [y] happened", and that's enough. If they want perfect, flawless engagement, they're going to have to pick something else. :P

(I have pointed this out; Sharon is mildly bothered, I think, because DS9 was her pick and she loves it and wants me to love it too, and I am just — I have seen most of it and I know I am not the target audience, and rewatching it is a bit like, "welp.")

Anyway, the night ended on a high note, me banging on my chest and declaring wholeheartedly how much I love [CHARACTER] from [PODCAST], he is One Of My Blorbos Okay, and people laughing because I do not usually talk about fandom — or at least, when I do talk about it, it's pretty — not that? Sedate, maybe, is the better way to put it.

(I'm excited to talk to them about this, something that I think also came as a surprise to them both, but oh, well, I contain multitudes? Ha.)

I posted fic to AO3 for the first time ever! Well, not counting the thing that got auto-picked up when another archive shut down and shared there.

It's origfic, the weird iddy thing I've been working on. I am not...not-proud of it? Just. Ha. It's difficult to go, oh yes I should share this with people when I'm also like, "right, so, how cool are all of us with [long list of topics goes here]?"

At any rate!

I got one (1) comment tonight. I was like, "dang, already?" (because I mean...) —

It was spam.

Apparently the same scams I get in my work inbox re: "you've been selected for [imaginary magazine that's supposedly about Inspiring Women Leaders]" have hit AO3. I thought I had comment moderation turned on, but evidently not, so I got the blandest — well, yeah.

The richness and creativity of your story genuinely stand out — it holds exceptional promise as a comic. As a paid illustrator specializing in narrative art, I work on commission and would love to collaborate if you’re ever interested in visualizing your work. You can connect with me via Discord at [REDACTED BECAUSE FUCK 'EM]

On the one hand, deep sigh, this sort of stuff is insidious and there are probably people who do genuinely message them going, "oh my gosh, yes, draw my thing!" — but on the other hand...

The first chapter has a very graphic "we have to fake consummating our marriage" scene.

The second chapter of this work immediately hits on some pretty intense kink.

So, you know. Holds exceptional promise as a comic — uh...huh. Sure. :)

I deleted it and turned comment moderation on. Am now laughing because, well. That would be my luck, wouldn't it, with how this week has gone.

If you're one of those fans who doesn't like Storm to be the most awesome at absolutely everything, this isn't your book.

But we're here for the real star of the book! The Sensational Character Find of 1997! That's right, it's time for my boy Maggott to shine!

Really? You really don't see it at all?

(The comment is a few years old and gave a few more details in the thread that read to me like they were a teen or young adult when they wrote it, so to protect their identity I'm linking to a different lyrics video of the same song. But seriously, there's a level of stupidity that can't be entirely excused by youth.)

Who's that? #Purrcy being adorable? I was walking by and I had to ask ...
#cats #CatsOfBluesky #Caturday

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby, lying on his back with his paws in the air, turns his head to look over his shoulder and behind him. He looks vaguely embarrassed.

Under the breakfast table, up against the sunny window, keeping an eye on the human while cleaning his paws -- it's a good life if you're a cat. And you get to rest your head on a metal window crank, which is apparently choice.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby lies on his side on a broad, sunny windowsill. He's licking his front paw with maximum tongue while side-eyeing the photographer.

We've now finished the online WSFS Business Meetings, it's just a question of how much Business Meeting stuff will get down in-person at Worldcon. But at least this time, unlike Glasgow, I can plan to spend most of my Worldcon time *at Worldcon*, which should be much more fun.

One of the things the Business Meeting did was vote for a Trial Committee to decide what to do about those accused of mis- and malfeasance around the 2023 Chengdu Hugo Awards, and ... I'm on it. So I guess I'm officially a BNF now 👀! That'll be an adventure, all right.

One of the things I'm looking forward to at Worldcon is that Martha Wells is the Guest of Honor, so there will be *lots* of Murderbot content, it'll be more or less the first Murderbot con. I'm not really *in* Murderbot fandom, yet, I read some of the fic but I don't really have time/brain cells for fannish immersion right now. But it's just so nice to have something that makes both halves of my fannish life, the SFF half & the fanfic/AO3 half, so *happy*. And when we all know Wells is a good person who's worked really hard for her success, and who's had to deal with a lot of crap in the last few years and now a ship full of money has come in for her.

Big Meany

Bella really wanted to get into the bedroom to go to sleep. I had to tell her “No.” I feel like a big meany.

Woke up at 7 AM. Gracie looks like she feels a little better. Took Bella out. Texted the vet about how Gracie doesn’t want to walk with the cone collar, but I’ll try again in a few minutes. Bella came bursting into the bedroom and sniffed Gracie. Gracie jumped off of the bed, but walked only a few steps out of the room and froze. Maybe I’ll try luring her out with hot dogs. Crud. The vet is now closed on Saturdays. I contacted a vet helpline that I get with my pet insurance.

I went to let Lily out of the basement, and instead, Oliver went down there. Sigh. I don’t understand what the attraction is.

The vet helpline people said to take her cone collar off, leash walk her, and put it back on when we’re done. It worked, although it was a real pain to get the collar back on. But I did it. Also, Gracie gobbled up her meds hidden in hot dog slices.

Now we’re all fed. Nap time. Bella keeps whining. All this change makes her unhappy.

Gracie is such a good-natured soul. She was licking my knee ever though I’m doing stuff that she doesn’t like. (Zara, on the other hand, gets good and mad when I squirt stuff in her ears.)

Napped for an hour. It’s not raining, so I wonder if I should get out in the yard. Shower first. Oh crud, I forgot to do laundry. I might have enough clothes though. Yeah, I have clothes. I need to order more Who Gives a Crap paper towels though (done).

Had lunch. I think that I’ll take another short nap. The forecasters are saying rain. Gracie was wagging her tail when I came in! And she gave me a kiss. She must be feeling better.

I checked whether elevated planters are on sale, and no, they’re not at Gardeners.com. I did find one elsewhere though at a good price. Actually, I found some on Overstock.com that are even cheaper. I’d like to be able to plant fall crops if possible. No, I’d need to plant them now. Oh well.

Showered and started a load of laundry.

Got the packages off of the porch. Took out the raspberries to benefit from the rain. My mud shoes are at the bottom of the stairs and soaked. Oops. I’m sitting for a moment and then will take Bella out. The storm clouds are rolling in. Here comes the storm.

Took Gracie outside but she didn’t do anything. Took Bella out, and she did. Good girl.

I wrestled the recycling bin into the basement stairwell so that I can throw stuff in it until late at night. I’m trying to figure out how to do things. I’d like to put my new stoneware away, but that involves putting the old stuff in the basement, and the recycle bin is in the way. Right now, I’m opening packages. The instructions for my new dog bed are in Italian.

Oliver sez, “Feed me!!”

I got my Roam duffle bag and it’s very nice. I put my blanket for the flight (which I also just got) in it. That reminded me that I need shoe bags for packing.

Severe thunderstorm warning.

Oliver and Lily, who generally get along quite well, are fighting. Fed them and they went away. I was going to feed the dogs but it’s pouring out right now. They won’t want to go out. I need to check when this will be over. I lay down for a little while and the rain is over. Fed Bella and took her out.

Gracie broke the cone collar. I ordered a new one for delivery tomorrow. I hope that she won’t mess up her sutures in the meantime. I moved the collar around so that it’s a half collar.

I tried to do Zara's ears but she got away. The cheeky bastard Oliver went in her room when I opened the door. I evicted Lily from my chair, protesting wildly. I'm going to post and do some work on the kitchen.

Oops, I forgot to put clothes in the dryer. Done.

Maybe I'll work on packing.

[Music] Sabaton: "Legends" (upcoming)

Sabaton has announced a new album, Legends, due to be released in October. This is a different turn from their more recent WWI-themed albums; Legends reaches back further in time, exploring "legendary" figures from various periods in history, from the ancient world to the Napoleonic Wars. Four of the songs are already up on their Bandcamp.

For a while now I've hoped that they would tackle some earlier historical subjects - I did like the WWI stuff, but it's a pretty big world out there. So I'm excited that this new album is going to have more variety.

Some of the subjects are obvious based on song title, but others not so much; luckily for us the subject is listed under the lyric pages for each song on Sabaton's website (here)

That was the main thing today. Got up a little early and ate breakfast and had coffee.

Linda and Betsy went kayaking and I took a shower and washed my hair. When they got back Betsy and I went blueberry picking at the U Pick down the road.

I kind of got in a fugue, and ended up picking five pounds. What I am going to do with them all I don't know! I had some of them for lunch and I'll keep putting them on my breakfast cereal.

The rest of the day I read and went to DCslash. I went to the Starsky and Hutch panel, and the Good Omens panel, and Nox's Tea Party, and those were fun.

I Teamed the FWiB, thouogh only for an hour because it butted up to the Good Omens panel.

Tomorrow I don't think there's to much in DCslash I want to see so I'll spend more time with family and the cottage.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. DCslash.

3. Being here.

4. Blueberries.

5. Good books.

6. The weather wasn't too hot.

I tried to take a walk this afternoon - but only made it around the block, the air was thick with an almost invisible orange tinted haze. It was like the sky had a slight orange tint to it - barely visible. And I found it hard to breath - as if the air was slightly dusty. (I may be more sensitive to allergens since my last bout with COVID? ) So I kept it short, and did floor exercises on the bed when I got home.

Read a bit this morning - making headway through The Rook - whose sense of humor, somewhat absurdist and witty, I appreciate. Overall I'm enjoying it. Although I edit various technical, financial and legal documentation for work, so I pick up on all of the writing and structural errors, which most people probably wouldn't pick up on. For example - it doesn't have clear transitions from one scene to the next. Also way too much reliance on italics. I kept thinking - how did this get published? And where the heck is the editor? Sleeping? I think that a lot reading traditionally published books that have been published within the last twenty years. Pre-21st Century Books seemed to be...I don't know, better edited? Smoother? There were exceptions of course - sigh best selling writers.

Talked to mother who is enjoying her stay in Seattle, with her cousin.
They hope to make it up to Mt Rainer tomorrow - mother's never been.

Catching up on memage:

25. If you plan a trip away for leisure, what would be your ideal itinerary?

[I stole slaymesoftly's because honestly, it sounded appealing at the moment, with a few tweaks]

Comfortable transportation (preferably not involving flying, but....), interesting places to see, nice weather, pleasant company. A Viking river cruise maybe or Train Expedition either across Canada or the US or in Europe if I could get to it without hours spent in airports and on crowded planes. Actually, I've been flirting with US or Canadian train travel lately, also European. I like trains - it's my favorite and preferred mode of transportation. I can sleep, eat, drink, read, and write on trains without much difficulty, and no jetlag.

26. Have you seen any good TV drama series lately? What’s the last thing you watched?

Yes. I have a lot of streaming services and widely eclectic taste. So finding something is never an issue.

Today I saw Adolescence on Netflix and it blew me away. It's a British mini-series - only four episodes long, and each an hour in length - and damn. Gotta to give the Brits credit - they know how to tell a good story in a brief space of time.

I'd read about it, but for the most part went in blind. It's very intense, and each episode is a single camera shot. There are no cuts. I highly recommend it.

Also weirdly, White Lotus S3 - was much better than expected, and will haunt me as well. It's also hyper-realism. And no, you don't have to see the previous seasons to understand it. It's a black comedy, but I didn't find it funny? However, it kind of moved me at times.

And... The Bear on Hulu and F/X - S4 blew me away. S1-4 are all streaming on Netflix, they aren't long seasons, just 8-10 episodes each, I think. And very character focused. I find comforting and stressful at the same time - it's about a NYC chef who returns to Chicago after his brother's death to take over the family restaurant and turn it into a premiere Chicago establishment.
