I have to make a few unexpected edits, but the final counts for submissions are 219 fics to WIPBB and 45 art projects to WIPRB! It looks like we're going to have plenty for artists and writers to choose from.

Claiming will go live on July 17th, so keep a lookout to the pinned post for links to the summaries! Also, please remember to check the newly updated schedule for the start and end dates of each stage of the bangs.

Good time zone, everyone. :3 It's a good day (night?) for a Free for All, don't you think? There are no themes to follow for prompts or fills. If you've had any ideas this week that didn't really work with Tuesday's or Thursday's posts, today's your chance to prompt 'em. Be free, and have fun! ✎

Just a few rules:
1. No more than five prompts in a row.
2. No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
3. Use the character's full name and the fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
4. No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
5. If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
6. If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Are today's prompts not catching your eye? No worries, because we have plenty of older prompts that just might do the trick! You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

I went downtown like ‘usual’ and hit CVS (I needed one item that I have gotten there in the past and they didn’t have it!), Price Chopper (for a couple of veggie items to go with meals), and the Bakery (for Pip’s deli meat). I also got in a walk around the park and stopped at the veterinarian on the way home for Ti's special dog food.

After unloading the car and putting everything away, I got to mom’s ~10am and stayed until ~3pm. Today’s chores, before and after I went to mom’s, included: two loads of laundry (both washed AND dried, one folded), hand-washed dishes, hard-boiled eggs, grilled steak for Pip's supper, scooped kitty litter, and shaved.

I started and finished the next two Inn at Holiday Bay cozies and watched the current ep of Murderbot.

Temps started out at 65.7(F) and reached 93.7. It was hot. Thankfully I didn't need to spend much time outside.

Colleen died four years ago, at 04:30 Pacific time, so probably around the time I finish this post. It seems like a long time ago, or maybe just a few days. Or two moves. I'm surrounded by memories. Memorabilia. Every so often I'm struck by how many of my things have stories attached to them; many of them involving Colleen. To be expected -- we were together for half a century.

The world is very different from what it was four years ago, mostly not for the better; there are many things that I miss. And of course people. Too many people.

It's 1pm; we lit a candle for Colleen an hour ago, and toasted her memory, and talked for a bit. N found some purple flowers in the front planter to set in a bowl next to the candle. A candle makes a good focus for giving her a silent update. It's been a nice, quiet remembrance.

I'm going to post this, and sing a couple of songs. See whether I get through Eyes Like the Morning without falling apart.

Colleen, I will always love you.

I wrote another Murderbot 1x10 episode missing scene.

Echoes (gen, 2500 words, Gurathin-centric)
Summary redacted because of spoilers; basically Gurathin's POV on some of the events of the finale.

A few notes on the fic (spoilery for both fic and episode):
under here• I kept tweaking Gura's final line to Murderbot, so it might be a bit different if you read an earlier version. (I felt like I needed to soften it from how it originally was. They are hard to write! Especially keeping their edge when they're so soft in the final scene.)

• We know Murderbot has trouble figuring out what it's feeling, but I also think it's very plausible that Gurathin has the same problem, if not as badly. He's repressed so much for so long. Asking himself to identify exactly what emotions he's feeling is something that some therapist or other taught him to do.

• This is not necessary context for the fic and it's entirely subject to interpretation, but what I was thinking when it wrote it is that Murderbot using "its" for augmented humans in its last line of dialogue to Gurathin is actually MB doing roughly the same thing (except more emotionally positive) that Gurathin is doing in the episode of the show where he's arguing with Mensah and calls it "he" and then corrects himself to "it." It's over-identifying and doesn't even realize that it's doing so; I mean, it's worried about Gurathin, obviously, and that's why it's here, but there's also a certain amount of "we are the same kind of creature" going on here, even though it doesn't realize it's relating to him on that level. It knows that he might have damaged himself with the data overload because it also knows that it might damage itself in a similar way, and he has much less storage to handle it. And it's just kind of subconsciously being concerned about him as it might be concerned about a fellow construct, or itself, having taken damage. Of course neither of them parses all of that consciously.

In other events, Terrible Temperature Troubles Flash Exchange revealed gifts tonight! I got two absolutely delightful gifts - An Official Complaint Against the Universe (Babylon 5, Vir & Londo, hypothermia and h/c) and Consequences of Cold (Biggles, Biggles/EvS, snuggling when chilled). I loved them!

And finally, [community profile] hurtcomfortex author reveals were tonight. I wrote Sleepover (MASH, 1700 words, Margaret POV) with huddling for warmth and light comfort after nightmares.

'The Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson is on a mission to revive the world’s tallest bird, 600 years after it went extinct

Inspired by their debut project, Jackson is now working with Colossal to bring the ancient moa back to life through subfossil sourcing and genetic engineering.

On July 8, Jackson and his partner donated $15 million to the project
.

The moa is an excellent choice for de-extinction, as it died out relatively recently and due to human misbehavior.

Challenge #2

Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.
Creative: Write a love poem to anyone or anything you like

I'm coming in a little late on this one, but catching up now. This is a hard question! Not because there's nothing I'm sentimental about, but because there's so much. It's genuinely hard to decide what to talk about.

Here's what I ended up with...
I love writing. More specifically, I love writing between and among the lines of what already exists. These days that's largely fanfiction, but if I were to write an original novel (I'd like to someday) it would almost definitely end up being historical fiction and/or magical realism and/or magical realism-adjacent. Something where I can take the real world and spin it up into something different. It's just so interesting to dig into what's real or canon, and then find the spaces in between to fill them up with something that isn't real but maybe could be, in a way that blurs the lines until you're not sure which was the real part to begin with. Bringing the fantastical down a notch by elevating the mundane to something extraordinary.

Part of my interest in this is that there's just so much to learn in the world. In my current longfic project that is based on DC Comics canon in the mid-'90s, I've got a character who is a first-generation Hmong American and another who is Vietnamese but living in the US. I initially started reading about refugee experiences to help inform my writing, but at this point I've ended up spending the better part of three or four years working my way through a variety of migrant and refugee literature purely for its own sake. Almost none of what I'm writing is actually about this topic - it's a superhero story about grief and belonging and family ties, not the human cost of forced displacement. But I've become a better, more informed, more empathetic person as a result of this exploration, not to mention a better writer, and I'm grateful to all of the authors who have contributed their stories and wisdom to this corner of the pool of human literature.

Which... maybe that doesn't quite seem related to magical realism and writing between lines or any of that, but to me, it's all connected. You can only write between lines if you know where the lines are and what they're made of, and you can only know that by learning about the world as it exists, and you can only learn that by listening to others, and you can only listen to others by witnessing their reality in whatever way we can manage with art and writing and stories and everything else we as humans create.

Is that a poem? Maybe that's a poem.

This is the sign-up post for the 2025 October Review-a-Thon I’m hosting here in [community profile] booknook! To sign up, simply comment on this post with what day(s) you’re claiming.

Each day claimed equals one distinctive review, so if you’re claiming three days, you’re signing up to post three different reviews. You can claim up to five days. You can claim a day that’s already claimed, but you must claim different days for each review. You do not need to mention what book(s) you intend to review. You can claim more days up to the max at any time, simply make a new comment and claim more. You can unclaim a day at any time. Sign-ups are open until Oct 30.

Good luck!

Posting Guidelines (click the arrow!)
  • We’re not doing any specific rules regarding the reviews for the events. Your post just needs to adhere to any General Posting Guidelines that applies: this means including a clear header with information regarding the book’s title, author, and any applicable content warnings.

  • Any spoilers (no matter how old the book is) need to be behind a cut or an accordion (this is an accordion!)

  • If your review is not suitable for all ages, adjust the age restriction of the post.

  • The subject line should clearly state that it’s a review. Please tag for at least format, age group, and genre.

  • The review needs to be posted in its entirety, don’t just go ‘and you can keep reading on…’

  • You need to be a member to post to the comm.

Questions and Concerns
I will make a top comment on this post, please leave any questions and concerns about the event as a reply to that comment to easily keep everything in one place. This post will not be sticky, as I think we’re already on max on that, but I will link it in the sidebar under the new ‘Quick Navigation’ heading.

What if I don’t make it to my claimed day?
If you don't post a review on the day you signed up for, nothing will happen :D This is intended to be a low-pressure, fun event, and not meant to put undue pressure on you. Again, [community profile] booknook is always open to reviews! You can post it later, or not at all. You also would not be required to mention in your sign-up which book you intend to review so you can change your mind until the very last second. There are no repercussions for not posting anything on your claimed day!

What if I’m not signed up but I want to post a review in October?
[community profile] booknook is open to reviews 24/7 and that would not change. You’re absolutely still allowed to post a review during this month (even on a claimed day) without signing up!

What kind of books can I review?
Any kind of books! Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, webnovels, short stories, etc. If you think it counts, it counts. Likewise, it doesn't matter how old the book is; a 200-year-old book is just as welcome as one that was just published two weeks ago. Here, it's just all about the books! :D

How does reviews work?
In general, a review should contain an introduction of the book and what you think about it and whether it's something you would recommend to others. Here's a few quick links I found searching (if you've got resources for tips on writing reviews, you're welcome to share them and I can add them to the list):

Today is sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a house wren.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/11/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a fox squirrel.

EDIT 7/11/25 -- Yesterday I collected 5 little pink crabapples while out and about. These are almost marble size, much more useful than the pea-sized ones. So I potted up those today to see if they'll sprout.

As it says on the tin: Good news, stupid humans: Murderbot has been renewed (avclub.com) [The big question is, who is going to play ART?!!]
bluapapilio: Idia from Twisted Wonderland (Default)

I started playing Persona 5: The Phantom X and am enjoying it but I have a confession to make...I've never played any of the original games. I have watched some of a let's play for P5, watched the anime for that and for P4 but I think that's it (besides reading AkeShu fic). I never planned to actually play the games for reasons I don't remember (though P5 made me consider it). Now I've changed my mind and am diving in with the first game. I got it through Vimms which gathers old school games.

So far? It's good to know that the music was good from the beginning! Navigating the school's hallways makes me dizzy, does it go that fast on the original console?? I hope I didn't miss anything because I kept getting lost lol

The designs are very interesting, they all look American or English. In JP Masao's mom calls calls him Maa-kun so the EN version called him 'Mark' as a nickname. Looks like Hidehiko's nickname is the same in the JP.

Masao is sweet with Maki, seems he can be reliable. :)

I don't normally play with English voices but beggars can't be choosers and the voices aren't bad here.

Yamaoka and Nanjou's relationship is funny and sweet too.

Oh no you have to pick your stats in this game? I'll just follow this.

In a hospital full of doctors Yamaoka still wasn't helped by anyone. 😵 Also that promise he made Nanjou make...may as well ask him to become the emperor;; Agh poor Nanjou, I hope this group all become close so he doesn't feel so alone.

I don't like that it's not clear what you're supposed to be doing at any given time. No quest log or tracking. If you stop playing for a while it can take a bit to remember what you're doing. Sometimes characters remind you but...Instead of safe rooms there are 'Agastya trees' where you can save.

Maki showed up at the school with no memory, she probably didn't even realize her mom was injured in the infirmary. Masao get captured by the demons and apparently they just put him in jail instead of killing him?? They even put the key in the key box lol

Oh ok apparently demons can take over humans??

I'm curious how the earthquake, Maki's waking and the DEVA system are connected, plus Maki's missing friend? And of course Personas. Apparently anyone can have them, not just heroes.

Noo, using Persona skills isn't part of auto?!

I love how irritable the characters get when you don't go to the next quest point fast enough. Sorry but exploration is life!!

In the Abandoned Werehouse, how do they know Ayase doesn't have a Persona too, since it's happened to the last few people who joined before?? Now she's in danger on her own. Also with the school going under, I hope Maki's mom is okay.
