vampires suck
Aug. 24th, 2010 09:43 pmor do they? I shall find out because on a wild hair I signed up for the vampire special studies one of the English profs is offering. I don't have enough to do so I decided to go back to school for fun and no profit. It should be interesting. I've read everything that's been assigned so far including one of the critical texts (well my friend WROTE it). However the book store didn't get the books in (big shocker) but I do own Stoker's Dracula andthe woman who rode away is online.
Why the hell do I NOT teach a class that entails us sitting on our asses and watching an episode of Buffy? Sadly the one chosen for today was Buffy vs Dracula and I don't like that one.
Still this shall be interesting in that 80% of our grade is divided up into a) a creative writing project (40%) and b) a theoretical/intreprative paper (40%). Okay dude, I could just pull out an old undone vampire thing and say here you go but I haven't done a theoretical English paper since Star TreK the Next Generation was on TV and it was first run!
So, since you might be seeing bits of my paper online with the big help me PLEASE whine, what might COM write about? I was thinking of a) Western vampire legends interpreted thru Japanese Manga/anime or b) SF twist on the vampire legends...something she knows nothing about, either of them. I did learn she hates the scientific twist on vampires so that is out. (or else i would have done the medical aspects of the vampire legend)
speaking of which, name me off some anime/manga vampires. I know vampire knight, blood+ lament of the lamb, millenium snow, the one with Father Nightroad (my brain just locked on the title) and it can be the energy vampire or even relationship vampirism. Thanks
And much like
wildrider I think my creative writing will come from one of my vampire novel universes, i.e. MachiavelliMooon but I have to double check if the pop culture vampire is okay or do i have to have some deep hidden reveal in this.
Kanda is SO GLAD i'm home. OMG YOU LEFT ME ALL DAY. And I did since I taught for 3 hours straight, had a 3 hour break than took the 3 hour at night vampire course.
I'm tired (in a good way) and have a migraine (there is never good there). I see the pain doctor on thursday and I'm taking Ginko to the vet on Saturday (Mom- oh god, there goes my daughter AGAIN)
ETA - I know how Moon Phase,Vampire Princess Miyu, Nightwalker, Hellsing and Vampire D on the list (how i forgot the last two...)

Date: 2010-08-25 01:56 am (UTC)thanks. Are you on my original fiction filter since the story would be going up there? the nonfiction wouldn't be
well it would interest me too since I've been thinking about that for a couple years now (figures, now that one manga is gone...)

Date: 2010-08-25 02:27 am (UTC)The only "vampire" anime I've seen is Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing, neither of which were all that good (well, they're pretty, at least); and I have seen some Chinese vampire movies, which are a hoot to a western audience, and of course my own vampires, which borrow heavily from both the modern media and legend...
I'm not sure what I'd do for a theoretical paper. It's interesting, anyway. I suppose they chose "Buffy v. Dracula" as a way to show how the legends can be (awkwardly) combined with the modern media versions of vampires.

Date: 2010-08-25 02:40 am (UTC)Yes I should have remembered both D and Hellsing
She really wanted us to see how that Buffy was really an homage to Bela Lugosi's Dracula but in typical Rio style they didn't leave us a controller for the DVD player and she couldn't really get to scenes easily so we skipped that until next week
