I did learn that I'm going to need to get a vat of coffee to get thru my vampire class but that's not what i'm talking about. I had no idea that when Bela Lugosi et al made Dracula that a) it had been a play first and Bela had been doing it there and b) that at the same time in 1931? (I think, horror flick people correct me if I'm wrong) that after Bela and that crew finished for the day, a Spanish crew used the same sets and filmed Dracula with Spanish speaking actors. For that time period, I was surprised. we watched some of it. Dracula had a maniacal grin better suited for Renfield.

I was also surprised when she said i didn't need to do any real research or footnoting for my paper, just demonstrate critical thinking. YAY. that's easier. on the other hand i have to read all of Dracula, Wuthering Heights, Demian and Picture of DOrian Gray and I didnt really like any of them the first time around. and if someone other than the english honor dude (the only guy in class) doesn't start SAYING something this is going to be a very long experience.

I hate to say this since I don't LIKE doing it but now that onemanga is dead, anyone know other sources to look stuff up so i don't have to buy a buttload of manga I might not want to keep. (Hellsing and Vampire KNight are at the library)

since i can do 'pop culture' vampires I will be using my Machiavelli Moon setting.

I love old style Dracula. Haven't seen any of Bela's stuff though.

Clicked the eggs.

Awww, that sucks about OneManga since I checked out series that I never heard of before and read a few episodes.

really? It's worth it for the history.

thanks

I did too but on the writing end of things (as i'm sure you'll understand) i get the cries of we're losing money and you're killing us with piracy

I usually go to mangastream but they cater to a limited amount so mangafox may be where you need to go. Unfortunately, they were hit as well (If memory serves, the purges happened because of them?) so only recent chapters are posted on each site then taken down. Bleachexile (http://manga.bleachexile.com/series.html) seems to still be going strong though.

Yeah, I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, I hear that. I usually read a few to see if I liked it and wrote down the titles to look up so I could buy when I had the money.

The Portrait of Dorian Gray, I read that junior year of hs for summer reading; wasn't too bad, but I just hate old literature all around most of the time so I'm biased haha

mangareader.net seems to still be doing well, I recommend it though I only read a few things online so I'm not sure how extensive it is or if anything's actively being taken down.

Bob Fish will have a lot to say about the Dracula stuff I'm sure.

[livejournal.com profile] free_manga has a lot of stuff uploaded. Haven't looked through it myself, but joined when onemanga went down.

All true about 'Dracula' - There's a really neat documentary that's on my DVD of the Bela Lugosi version (as well as a nice one Bela himself, featuring his son who looks just like him). The mexican version is said to be technologically and 'artfully' better, but I don't like it - the Bela one is still my fav.

we watched them back to back. Frankly, they look very much the same so I'm not sure how o ne could be technologically better with the exact same sets but there's always someone out there tryign to prove their point.

I liked Bela better. Seriously the Spanish vampire looked comedic

How can anyone make a vampire course boring? I need coffee in me to teach horror, but that's another story, I need coffee in me to be able to choose which sandwich to buy.

That's completely right - Dracula was optioned from a successful Broadway play by John Balderston, and a Spanish version was filmed at the same time. The Spanish Dracula is pretty cool - their Dracula isn't so great, but the camerawork is way cooler (Karl Freund, what were you doing on Dracula? Apparently he and Tod Browning hated each other) and the Spanish Mina is far sexier. This is all right at the centre of my academic speciality, so if you want any research/assignment advice, just give me a shout.

it's not so much that the class is boring as it is I am old and after teaching a three hour class myself I'm sitting thru another and as soon as the lights go out to show a movie I've seen 100 times it's like thunk.

the Spanish Dracula was pretty awful. See i'll take your word that the camera work was cooler. i didn't notice that myself. the Spanish Mina and Lucy were definitely sexier. That said I want the one dress of the American Mina, the one she's wearing in her father's study when Dracula makes his appearance to Van Helsing and the rest

and thanks for the offer. i was actually thinking of the anime/manga vampire and sexuality as my paper. And I will need eyes on my creative writing assignment

I think I'd do well in this course. I've already read Dracula, Wuthering Heights (several times) and Dorian Gray. Don't know Demian, though. The book version of Dorian has some very discreet homoerotic content that was completely left out of the movie, but you need to know the Victorian "code words" for same-sex relationships to spot anything. Wilde's creepy treatise on hedonism seems like an odd choice for a course on vampires, though, unless it's the immortality thing that connects it. And Wuthering Heights always struck me as more necrophiliac than vampiric.

The guy who owns the garage where we take our cars, by the way, is named Dorian. I snicker every time I see that name on his desk nameplate.

I've read about 80% of the stuff before including most of the 1800's short stories. Demain is by Hermann Hesse...i loathe Hesse.

I think in the sense that the in both Dorian and in Wuthering Heights there are relationship/energy/emotional vampires. or at least that's what i'm getting from it.

I have a friend who's name is Dorian and Dori is a woman...

Oh I hate it, anything old and stuffy makes me gag; there's only so much old-classic I can read before I have to pick up a manga or something to clear my head hahaha
