since just before Christmas I've had my computer freeze during start up a couple of times but it was okay in restart.

Today I was on the phone with mom so I walked away from the computer as it started and came back to see a start up repair window I've never seen before informing me that my computer had a serious error. It eventually asked me to do a systems restore and now word is trying to rescue documents from 4 nights ago.

Yeah, better buy a disc when I'm in Jackson today to back this up and give some thought of saving up for a big flash drive to put all my newer stories on every time I open and work on something. And my pictures too.

sigh.


ETA - I do have cleaners and virus stuff running and finding nothing but I do know this began after my IT dept saved this thing from that huge virus this summer

You might want to consider doing some between now and when you get the disc, just in case. Maybe create a sock account here on LJ and make it so only you can see it. Then post everything you don't have backed up onto there?

Man, that sucks.

That's why I got an external hard drive. That virus that wiped my computer last time took everything. It was awful. Now I save it all on the external just in case.

Flash drives are getting cheaper. For a 4 gig at Best Buy, they want $20. Not sure what kind of stores you have around you. Target might have some cheaper ones.

Also, Dropbox.com gives like 2 gig of free space and you can map it to multiple computers.

I have two, possibly three novels stored in multiple formats on a 2-gig flash drive, and there's still tons of capacity left. I don't trust disks anymore, plus my netbook doesn't have any disk drives, just the USB ports, so I can only import my writing to work on it via the flash. Do whatever you have to do to get anything important to you backed up. It makes computer melt-downs so much less scary when you know you aren't going to lose an entire novel to a hard drive death.

You should know by now that electronics never live more than a year when you get your hands on them. You are the kiss of death.

Computer crash threats are very scary. Definitely look into an external hard drive or at least flash drives when you get the chance.

In the short term, you can always upload stories to Google Docs and photos to something like Photobucket or some other kind of online storage. I've started keeping WIPs in Google Docs so I can work on them from any computer without worrying about having the latest version on a flash drive with me.
