Riza had given up on reminding Roy that it wasn’t a competition between their daughter and Edward’s son. The boy was five years older, after all. Naturally, he had accomplished more. Of course, Kate was showing every sign of being equally talented. She was starting to read on her own, when she was just four and she couldn’t keep her little fingers off her dad’s and granddad’s alchemy texts.
She watched her child romping in their backyard with her dad. Roy had been so afraid he wouldn’t be a good father. He complained of having next to nothing in the way of examples as his dad had died so young and hers was not a good example. Riza assured him the things the Madam had taught him would be of help in raising their daughter, that and Maes had detailed every day of Elicia’s life. Roy knew what to do if he just followed his friend’s footsteps sans the ubiquitous camera. Riza somehow wasn’t surprised Roy failed on that point.
Roy let his five year old tackle him into the dandelions. Kate laughed loudly, standing on her dad’s belly, arms stretched to the sky. Even from the back patio, Riza could see the gleam in her daughter’s dark eyes. Kate’s walnut brown hair whipped in the wind as she proclaimed domination over her dad.
“Riza, save me,” Roy cried gleefully.
Levering herself up, careful of her burgeoning belly, she went to save him from the wild creature he loved to call their crazy talented, beautiful daughter. Oh, he liked to tack on ‘just like daddy’ when he was in a mood or ‘just like mommy’ when he was in the mood that led to more kids. Riza couldn’t argue. They had the most amazing child and she couldn’t be happier. Of course, she had no doubt this next child would be placed in direct competition with Ed’s little girl by their fathers. She and Winry could more easily agree that all of their children were equally special and sit back and watch all the kids – including the two adult ones – play.
