Finally got mom to say hey yeah maybe tea will be a good mother's day gift. (she kept saying i want nothing)

I got out into the garden for an oddly pain-free session. I literally filled my red wagon with weeds. Accidentally whacked a few things I want to keep and I'm not sure about a couple perenials. I left them alone in case they come back. I DID yank out one obviously very dead one and I put in an antique rose. Check out my rose. It's a Paul Neyron, a hybrid perptual rose, a cultivar dating back to 1869. Got it for 3 bucks at Big Lots so you know it's not the healthiest of things...yet. I have another from them that's doing well but I noticed that something is eating the leaves. Time to look up green solutions for that problem.

I did find a hugely fat toad in there. Yay. I should get him a toad house. Found a pale wolf type spider. Left her alone even if she disgusts me. I might put the tomatoes in here too. Wish I found find something more attractive than tomato cages though.

Got my winter dress clothes put away and the summer dress ones out (next up the casual wear). I have a growing pile of 'donations' at this point. I could toss out a chunk of what I did keep if properly motivated. I had a hawaiian shirt here that might be too small now (it shrank. I bought it when I was heavier than now). Probably too big for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog

Watched Fringe

BORED. So very bored with this. THis was so completely predictable I couldn't even invest in Olivia's 'death' since I knew they'd just time travel their way out of it. The only thing I didn't predict was Peter 'never really existing' Okay yeah I know I'll turn it on next season since there isn't much fantasy type tv on but I'm not caring much about this

Watched the New Who

Even if it WAS silly. Yes I wanted to know how Amy learned to sword fight but I didn't really question it much...I am intrigued by the on/off pregnancy

Used to have antique tea roses all over the place down in the grove. But they stopped blooming the year Gerry died and they've never bloomed since. Also have a Rose of Sharon bush....but it too stopped blooming the same time that the tea roses did...and even died. Back yard used to smell heavenly in the Spring.

For some reason his White Iris aren't coming up this year.

Yay for toad! And you not killing the wolf spider. She and the toad can fight it out.

I found a new Hawaiian shirt at good will yesterday. It's cute. But I'm always on the lookout for more!

There are some amazingly cute tomato cages at Rural King. They come in various angles, you put them together, and they come in various colors, too. I want them.

Sorry to hear that the Fringe finale didn't do much for you! I loved the episode. I know the time travel bit was predictable--I knew when they said the wormhole went back in time that they would send the machine back. But I love Peter/Olivia so much I totally just eat this season up. It's too bad that there are so many sci-fi shows on TV right now, but I do like Fringe very much, despite all its obvious faults.

Yay for pain-free gardening! I like the cabbage rose. I like tea roses, also.

Toads are great. My mom once tried to kill off a bunch of black widow spiders that lived under our mobile home. She failed, but a couple of toads moved in and got rid of all of them. I admire your forbearance in not killing the wolf spider. They freak me out. The toad may take care of that, though.

I did question Amy's ability to sword fight, but I could put it down to her swinging wildly and the pirates being scared of being cut. What I don't know is why the Doctor, Amy, and the pirate captain woke up outside of the med bay instead of strapped to tables like everyone else. (Shhh! It's fantasy!)

My problem is I don't usually like alt. universes so this did nothing for me and I don't really like the actress who plays Olivia (but she impressed me more this season) so the whole first half of the season turned me off. Maybe next year I'll be happier with it

they were at opposite ends of the garden

if it doesn't fit,you want it? You'd just have to take it in maybe the way it shrinks...

yeah I questioned that too. plot hole

I think they grieved themselves to death. His favorite tree in the back yard died a year to the day of his death. In fact it never even leafed out that whole year. Then the next year his other favorite tree succumbed to a tornado..giving it's life to protect the house. Now his hummingbirds are no longer showing up, even though they have feeders out. they know.

If you don't like tomato cages, try tomato spirals. They're those long, metal stakes shaped in a shallow spiral, you've probably seen them. I use them, and they're very unobtrusive and do a great job keeping the tomatoes upright (the determinate types, anyway--the indeterminate Hillbilly might grow right out the top and fall over anyway, time will tell).

You can't have Victorian flower arrangements without cabbage roses. I've never tried old roses, out of fear the relentless humidity down here would spark off a black-spot epidemic, but I love the look of them.

i have not seen the tomato spirals. We only have the cages here

no you can not. I love old roses but yes you do have issues. that website had cold weather suggestions. you could see if it has humid/hot ones

Ah I see. I didn't know how I would like all the new universes, but I thought what the writers did this season worked really well. I loved discovering how all the characters and their red-verse counterparts and their future selves are all essentially the same person, yet different from how their experiences molded them. It worked for me, but I can also see how it wouldn't work for other people!

the ideas were for the most part interesting. I think what didn't work for me was teh soap opera Alt Olivia/Peter/Our Olivia drama. (though I DO like Peter/Olivia)

that and I really love our!Walter and his befuddled almost child like enthusiasm

However the acting all around was pretty darn good stuff.

I'll have to agree with you that Fringe came awfully close to becoming a daytime soap opera this season. I got really skirmish when the baby storyline was first introduced. But looking back, I think the writers handled it very well. Nothing was really dragged out, all the emotions felt like they progressed organically. I thought the Peter/Fauxlivia/Olivia love triangle developed at a good pace and ended satisfyingly, that is the show pretty much admitted that Peter and Olivia were meant to be. All the emphasis on emotions did feel a little ludicrous at times, but I gave Fringe a lot of leeway to take me where they wanted to go because I trusted the writers to be smart and professional about it. And I think they pulled it off.

Also Fauxlivia really allowed Anna Torv to show off her acting chops. Our Olivia always seemed so stiff and now I have a new appreciation for the nuisance which Anna Torv brings to Olivia. John Noble needs an Emmy. Ever since the first episode he has been beyond amazing!

I thought that they, too, would have woken on the floor at the time - it was just the Siren then put them on the benches and stuck the life support in? I agree with magpie about the sword waving - notice the pirates themselves are no longer carrying swords and are fighting her with sticks! All she has to do is flail and accidentally cut someone to 'kill' them.

It was a silly ep, but what's Who without a little silliness? I'm enjoying the plottiness of this season so far.

The rose is lovely. Garlic is said to keep bugs off of roses. Or spraying the leaves with soapy water. One or the other. Can't remember which. Brain is squishy.

The new rose is pretty as is the little hosta next to it. We have that type, the white and green type and the plain old green. I love roses. :)

I've used the soapy water for other insects too

got the hosta (and the plain green ones) from mom. I got the little purple ground cover from lowes. if i knew it worked this well i would have skipped the stones.

I think I have the same purple ground cover. I have no idea what it's name is. It's growing between the peonies. Should transplant some to the front beds.

I have one little spot left in my backyard. Not sure what I want out there. I may have to move my phlox. They're getting a little rambunctious and are taking over the backyard plot. I may move them out front, too. Phlox work wonderful as ground cover... but I only have this itty bitty little garden... and the three I planted have filled out.

see there you go. Plot hole half filled. The siren just didn't have time to put them in sick bay.

though Rory should have keyed in human physiology for her.

well yes, that is also true about Amy and the sword fight.

yes I am too. This is shaping up to be a very good season

I can't argue that. They didn't linger on the soapish plot lines (and surprised me by NOT revealing the baby to our side, at least not yet) So they did a good job with handling what could have been very maudlin and salacious story lines.

Also, no argument. I thought Torv was a lousy actress and that's why Olivia was so stiff but between Fauxlivia and trying to emulate Leonard Nimoy she really proved she does have some skills.

Noble is amazing

I liked Anna Torv but did think she was a weak actress (until this season!) and Josh Jackson was also disappointing. But John Noble was so amazing, I think his talent just overflowed and made the show great to watch.

Lowe's is where I got mine, so there's a good chance you'll find them there. Lowe's isn't imaginative enough to carry the rainbow-colored stakes, but green ones and rainbow ones all work the same.
