Berthold was used to his apprentice being peculiar. Still, seeing him huddled up on the grass under the clothesline was new and probably should be investigated before he took the carriage into town. The new shipment of books could wait five minutes. A half-full laundry basket rested next to Roy who was still curled into the fetal position, groaning.
“Is something wrong?” Berthold stared down at the teen.
“Riza kicked me!” Roy panted.
From the pained expression and the position of the alchemist’s hands, Berthold didn’t have to ask where. “What did you do to my daughter?”
With a shaking hand, Roy pointed to Riza’s plain white, unimaginative underwear swaying in the breeze as it tugged the clothesline. “Asked if she really wore those ugly panties?”
Berthold’s brow beetled. He knew that his apprentice had been raised in a hostess club. No doubt he had been privy to sights far more glorious than Riza’s serviceable undergarments. It was one of the reasons Berthold had been reluctant to take Roy on as an apprentice. He couldn’t be too careful who he let around Riza and teenaged boys in general were untrustworthy when matters of sex were concerned. “Why are you concerning yourself with my daughter’s under things?”
“Just thought I could get her something other than granny-panties.” Roy rolled over onto his back, his arms flopping in the grass. “That’s when she kicked me.”
“Foolish.” Berthold grunted. “And where is she now?”
Roy shook his head. “She told me to finish the laundry or else.”
Berthold nodded. “I’d do it before she gets actually angry with you or worse, before I think more on what your interest in my daughter’s panties is. I’d suggest having it done before I get back to town.”
His apprentice’s already pale face went pastier and Roy bobbed his head. Berthold didn’t allow himself a grin until he had turned away and was on his way to the stable. Boys, they never changed.

Date: 2011-09-02 03:41 pm (UTC)Roy’s was a very Ed-like behaviour, and Riza’s very Winry-like. No wonder the girls bonded so quickly in the manga.

Date: 2011-09-02 05:48 pm (UTC)I've long considered Roy and Riza to be the more mature versions of Ed and Winry (I suspect their alikeness is partly why Ed and Roy bicker so much)
Thank you
