The word screamed the most today in this house, followed by Oh hell no! and STOP IT. He darted into the bedroom the moment I opened the door (it's forbidden ground) and I had to shove him out. Five minutes later I caught him mowing down my baby strawberry plants like he were a goat without the decency to eat them. Then he was flinging food. Then he snuck into the shower between the curtains and hit me in the butt while I was showering (again!). Right now he and Soul are in front of the drafty front door, praying for a chill. Good luck. I've already sweated out one 1000ML cup of water and I'm on my second.

still haven't gotten caught up at work. I have a seminar speech I have to prepare and this heat is sapping my will to live. I don't usually get this bad til May.

My co worker brought in goose eggs. I didn't realize they were so big. I never kept geese. we were talking about guinea fowl which my great grandmother (yes, my Italian granny, living out the stereotype...) had and I said I considered getting them if I got my house in the country. why? check it out here. They eat ticks. I could put them in the yard for that and put osage oranges around my foundation to keep out the spiders. But on the other hand I might not. Why? Here, this noise should explain the downside of guineas

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Oh but hon...they make FANTASTIC intruder alarms! Nothing moves without them knowing about it. Then again guinea fowl are afraid of me for some reason, and will flee in panic whenever I show up.

Guineas are like Peacocks that way, they both make a horrible racket and both make great watchdogs.

Mmm, osage oranges.

I heard the rooster crowing in the park today while I was walking the dogs.

You CAN eat peacocks. I mean, there are all those recipes from the Middle Ages.

He's got a flock of at least one, from what I was told today; this guy stopped me to ask if I'd seen the rooster/chickens in the park, and said he knew of two of them.

My parents used to raise guineas and said they were amazingly stupid, and also not really domesticated, so they were always having to get them out of the trees and back into the guinea pen. On the other hand, in Africa, they were wandering outside stores and cafes like dogs, scrounging.

Eudora Welty has a lovely poem about guineas, but since it's only available in Googlebooks I can't copy it. The title is "A Flock of Guinea Hens Seen from a Car" and I hope it can be seen here (http://books.google.com/books?id=d5K5hIQqsHsC&pg=PA79&dq=the+lute+and+the+pear+are+your+half-sisters&hl=en&sa=X&ei=QI1sT_TTM4uutwfGpoHGBg&ved=0CEkQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=the%20lute%20and%20the%20pear%20are%20your%20half-sisters&f=false).

Guinea fowl are dumber than chickens... believe it or not. They also leave piles of poo that rival most cats but not in a box. :S Yeah, my family have had guineas. I think between all of us, we've all raised one critter or another - except sheep and llamas.

Oh, they are pretty. And also there's that grouse that's gorgeous - I remember one of my SCA friends raised one for an Art-Sci project, who escaped her chicken pen. She wound up using bird shot to shoot it out of the tree it roosted in, refusing to let something she'd raised get eaten by some wild animal. :D The grouse survived the shooting, but not the eventual Art-Sci project.
