I made it World Book afternoon and handed out Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief to the developmental reading class on campus. As I've mentioned, literacy isn't stressed in these parts (seriously, this is so unlike the rest of Ohio it's not funny). I have to say they seemed ridiculously excited to get the book. Several of them have seen the movie (and one didn't see the reason to read a book if movies exist). On the other hand, the same several are going to be in my anatomy class next week. Whimpers.

I gave out the remaining books to my own class. They could use some reading skills too. They did seem pleased to get them. I hope they enjoy. I think though, this might be my last time.

I did draw the tally marks on my arm for Impossible Astronaut day and The Silence. No one noticed or at least not so they wanted to ask. However, at the writers meeting, one of them grabbed my arm and screamed 'oh my god, The Silence. We're going to die!'

Actually we had it at my ML's house (and there is a certain kitsch writing and sipping absinthe). I wish she could meet [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog (who might steal away with her dogs and the blue glass collection and and/all of the witchy stuff) and [livejournal.com profile] silvrethorn ML is very much like me (had I decided to marry and have kids) right down to being incapacitated by heat (i.e if it's hotter than 70 it shouldn't exist) and bright lights hurt her eyes. Her rat terrier/border collie mix was outside but Rosie, the elderly hound (collie?) mix was inside and hysterical. She would stare until you pet her and if you stopped, she's cry. She would go around the table suckering everyone. These people are why I'm considering sucking up the longer drive to work so I could hang out more. These are the people I would miss if I moved.

I was exhausted before I made the 2 hour round trip so now i'm wasted. So no decluttering.

And I heard a Kelly Clarkson (eep, this is like the second song I really like by her and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm no fan of things like American Idol) song that works well for Kaleo (or Scar and the Ishbalans for that matter)

Adopt one today!

Rat Terror/BC mix? OOoooo.

And Rosie sounds hysterical. Silly dog.

I'm glad you had a good night, despite exhaustion.

Blue glass and dogs and witchy stuff? Oooooo.

Hooray for you. One thing that's really a problem is that just passing a developmental reading class doesn't necessarily make you a good enough reader to take credit level classes. I can say that because I've taught developmental reading. Too often students get by who really shouldn't, and then they're stuck with courses they can't handle. I hope those prep classes will get more demanding and the teachers more skilled, because sometimes students work really hard, but just can't advance to another level of comprehension.

No argument. these people will most likely not pass anatomy. they don't even know basic words but won't ask either. We're working hard on upping the developmental courses but our students here are so far behind it's pathetic.

yeah crazy and sadly bright but 'not wise'

she was funny and you could see she was once pretty but has that smelly skin disease where the fur is coming out, kinda like Dodger had.

i'm so exhausted right now I'm half delusional in class.

you'd like ML. She writes for Llwellyn

Yeah, the only real solution is really early childhood education--they're already too far behind in kindergarten. A lot of ours were born to single moms who were kids themselves, and wound up getting looked after by old ladies who were headed into Alzheimers.

same here. definitely. That and from what I hear from people doing this longer than me, the whole no child left behind causes tons of issues

Love your icon, btw. I think so! I no longer teach freshman level classes, so the real disasters are weeded out before I see them, but I hear that the ones coming into developmental classes are worse and worse each year. So sad.

thanks. it's my last 2 weeks of class icon. I'll have another one for finals week.

yeah I hear you. I have issues even into the upper levels because they simply don't know basic stuff.

The Percy Jackson book and movie do not resemble each other much, aside from the character names and basic premise, so reading the book is very important.

I tried to explain that. Who wants to bet they'd rather watch the movie anyhow?

Ahhh.

Yeast infection in the skin? That's what Dodger had.

I'd bet.

OOooOOOOOooo. Yes. I'd like that.
