cornerofmadnessThis was fun. I'll stop myself here before people really start hating me for being unkind to animals. They're all pretty mild except for this first one lifted from the Watchers' Diaries as per Giles which is kinda closer to R for graphic nastiness to innocent puppies
Angelus - historical (graphic violence) - Obsession
He didn’t care that she was the daughter of a Watcher. That made it all the more exciting. Darla hated his new obsession, making him want the girl even more. His new girl was a pretty young thing, red-headed, for a bit of a change from his usual, Irish as a shillelagh.
Angelus wanted nothing more than to drink her down, to force himself between her legs, to get drunk on her fear, savoring that first, catching her puppy. He nailed the animal to her door after skinning and gutting it, leaving a love note for her in its jaws.
Spike/Dru historical - For Love
He had gone back and killed as many of them as he could. He had left Prague awash in blood for what they had done to his black rose making himself feel better.
It killed him to see her so weak and kittenish. Worse, nothing lifted Dru’s spirits. How could she fight if she lost the will. Until he had a cure, he could at least make her happy. He gave her a little kitten.
Dru’s eyes lit up as she took the animal. "Ooo, Spike, it’s lovely."
It would die, he knew but for now, his love was happy.
A puppy, she brings him a bloody puppy. What was he supposed to do with the damn animal? Was he like his whipped grandsire reduced to eating vermin? Spike slammed his hands down on his wheel chair. This was all the Slayer’s fault. When he could walk again, he’d wear her guts like a crown...well, maybe not. He fingered his well cared for hair.
"You need to eat, Spike," Dru wheedled again.
"You could bring me something tastier, pet," he replied. "Like a sweet little girl?"
"Naughty Spike." She slid onto his wheelchair with him. "How about a drink from Mummy?"
Mr. Gordo wasn’t just any stuffed animal. He had seen things other toys hadn’t. He was the one She hadn’t put away when She got older. She still needed him. He watched Her go from happy if a little self-centered to shell-shocked and afraid. She whispered to him about Merrick. She clung to him after She burned down the gym and they moved. She gave him a place of prominence on her bed in their new home. He withstood the rough fingers of Her new man. And now that man was gone and it was up to Gordo to comfort Her.
And these last three are interconnected drabbles that I'll just put up under an umbrella title.
Connor/Holtz Quor-toth - Age Five
"Father, can I keep it?" Steven held up the young Yaree for Holtz’s inspection. Usually he and Father ate the furry herbivorous creatures. "She has a bad leg. She’ll die."
"Steven, nothing in this place is a suitable pet," Holtz replied, examining the animal. Its back leg had been broken and healed improperly. It was very thin. His son was right; she wouldn’t last much longer on her own.
"Please, Father. She’s so nice," Steven hugged the mild mannered creature, tears forming in his blue eyes.
Holtz sighed, wanting Steven to have as normal a life as possible. "You’ll need to name her."
Connor/Holtz Quor-Toth Age Ten
"This way, Hoppy." Steven called to his Yaree pet. The animal had grown well under his care, standing as high as his knees.
She butted her head against his legs and he scratched her soft fur. Hoppy didn’t care much that Holtz had taken off again. She would just keep up with Steven’s fast pace, with her hopping gait, a legacy of her injured leg.
"He thinks he can hide from me." Steven smiled wickedly. "We’ll prove him wrong."
Hoppy turned limpid brown eyes on him then plopped down near their camp fire. Steven curled up with her for the night.
"Tomorrow."
Connor/Holtz Quor-Toth Age Fifteen
He had seen death so many times in his young life, he couldn’t count. He had dealt it out of hand, without a thought to the demons he slaughtered, wearing trophies sliced from their body around his neck.
But with all that death, Steven never once felt sorrow until now. He sobbed uncontrollably against Hoppy’s soft fur. This pain was new and he never wanted to feel it again.
Holtz stroked his back. "She had a good life, Steven. It was her time to go."
"But I loved her!"
"Even love can’t stave off death."
Steven hated that fact bitterly
