Eisteddfod
May. 18th, 2014 10:28 pmI volunteered to help with the Eisteddfod today. It was part of Bob Evans's Welsh Heritage Days. Mostly all I had to do there was sit and man the information tent (i.e. brought my Project Fierce story, edited half of it).
It went pretty well if sparsely attended. Sadly the literature/poetry part of the Eisteddfod didn't pan out but we had the music. It was my job to hand the certificates to the winners and get their info to mail them their prize money. I didn't know that part and actually the two organizers mostly left me alone to do that while they watched the music. I was okay with that since a) I'm sure they missed a lot of it yesterday b) I was in the shade c) editing time.
I did get to shop a little and I felt sorry for the vendors. While most of them were Welsh/Celtic related, not all were which was fine. But the problem is this was VERY local. My sad salary puts me at the top of the pecking order around here. There's not much money and while none of the crafters were overpriced, it WAS far too much money for here. I doubt they did well and I'm betting we won't see a return. Bob Evans made sure the food kinda sucked (so you have to go to their restaurant).
I did get some overpriced Welsh cakes to snack on and I will get photos of what I bought. I have to say I had one thought all week. I hope they have the symbol of Awen on a piece of jewelry. It looks like this. I've never seen it and since the Druids interest me more than any of the other pagan groups, I really wanted one. And they DID. I got some simple earrings.
And from the person representing two Welsh love spoon carvers. Now I want a bigger love spoon than the one I have but the prices are insane. Yes, it IS a lot of work (and for some reason wood is always pricey) but if I didn't pay these prices when I was in Wales, I wasn't going to now. They didn't bring a single one under 150$ even though they make them. Sad. I might have bought one.
There was a local vendor who made jewelry and I wanted this like life depended on it Yes it is silver bindings. Silver beads are embedded in the glass for stars. Silver is expensive. I just can't afford this. I want it though. Oh do I want it. (she does have other lovely less expensive things. Poke about her etsy page).
There is also a local ceramics maker. I have a weakness for ceramic (convenient since it's the one thing I can afford). I did buy a blue version of this mug Just one. He had a set of 4. Someone bought 3...He had a lovely tea service but I didn't have 100$ to spare for something I have no way of displaying and no one to share with (okay I could have people over for tea).
I also picked up a cd from the band that played, Moch Pryderi
Also here's a bit more on last week's Writerly Ways. writing diversity it's an interesting look at some of what I was saying as to why some authors are afraid to write diversity.
