It's a tad shaky but it's here.

I'm struggling to clean house (I've given up on perfect) before i leave because I know it's a possibility I'll be down here with mom at some point over the summer and all she'll do is bitch.

It's also hard to pack because I could conceivably be in PA for THREE months. I'm to the point I don't think I can fit it all in the car. Well the bags of books/videos for half price books can stay here if need be. Mom wants me to bring my beading. I brought enough reading material for 3 months.

I'm finding i hate reading ebooks. Forget for a moment I've yet to find a reader that doesn't give me headaches. I find them awkward to hold. I accidentally hit shit I don't want to. I can't remember what I read. I noticed that quite a bit. I've been noticing it a lot when I read text books for review. So I started looking around and we're finding that ebooks are interfering with cognition. To what extent we don't know. Here's a rather dumbed down take on it but interesting though. paper vs screens ANd with text book publishers wanting to go entirely ebook I find it disturbing. Also my tablet has a battery issue. I read for a half hour and it lost 25% of it's battery life. not good.

yes that would make the study null on you. I have yet to find a kindle I can read on that isn't a blinding headache in the making (taht said I might take my SiL's old one)

I don't remember ever liking it. I think a boyfriend gave it to me.

I like ereaders for just straight reading, but I've found a number of things where I miss having paper so I can flip back (notably with histories and, I just realized, plays -- I always like to flip back to "dramatis personae" when I'm reading a play).

They're convenient, but they really CAN'T replace printed books, as far as I'm concerned. I like them for carrying reading material (like to work or to a waiting room, on a trip, etc.), but when it comes to owning a book, I want the BOOK.

ETA: I have the old keyboard Kindle, which means I can read it in bright sunlight(with Mom couldn't with her fancy Kindle Fire); and, BTW, rain?

I don't believe in it anymore. They said it was going to rain here, but I never saw it.

yeah the not being able to flip is bothersome and I will admit they are convenient for travel (and I shouldn't knock them since several of my publications are e-only) but yes, I would rather have a book. I'm finding I'm using it to experiment with new authors but if I like the author I end up buying their next in paper.

I am shocked to learn how much it hurts my hand to hold the ereader. I did NOT expect that.

Oh and if you didn't get a chance to look at my Link, you might want to check out origfic_bingo if you'd like some prompts to help you get writing. It's sign up time and it's very low pressure. You technically just have to do 5 prompts regardless of it being a real bingo or not

I haven't had any trouble with holding the Kindle, although I had to turn it sideways to read the Shakespeare I just downloaded (I have to admit a true delight in all the classics available for free or next to nothing) -- I just couldn't get through "Bleak House" until I had the Kindle (giant book was just easier to hold that way!).

Hmm Mom has the same trouble I do. It hurts our hands/wrists. Though yes it would be less hurty than trying to hold up Doctor Sleep or something from the Songs of Fire and Ice.

That is something i did not know - that ebooks affect cognition. I much prefer books as their is always something more physical about them and i love the smell of a book.

I love all my Kindles, and my cousin loves her Paperwhite. She says that it's so much easier on her eyes than a printed book. And, yes, the Fires are not for outside, but the Kindle e-readers all work well in the sunlight.

I mainly only read fanfic on my iPad since a portable digital format is preferable to being stuck at my computer. I prefer the real thing for "real" books. (When I'm not listening to audiobooks in the car.)

I've been working on purging this weekend too. I'm determined to finally get rid of the old PC that's been under my kitchen table for years this weekend. (Staples recycles them.) Just gotta figure out how to get the hard drive out first.

They are definitely handy for something things but I do prefer paper. And I AM concerned with this push by publishers for ebooks in academia. If it IS negatively impacting learning that's an issue.

good luck with that. Man I need to do more than purge. Cleanse with fire might be the next step.

It's definitely not easier on mine. I have photosensitivity issues unfortunately. I'm more concerned about it's negative impact on cognitive learning since at least 1 major publisher for text books has gone totally e-book. My students have enough troubles learning but boy that sure does explain these students. (facebook and twitter also have similar negative cognitive impacts)

Yeah, it's not bad for that half hour of reading I do before bed but unless I'm trapped on a plane, I don't want to be reading for hours on this thing. And mostly I read in the tub. I know you can technically wrap them to protect them from the humidity but I have no luck with electronics to begin with.

I do too. I loved the argument between Jenny and Giles on Buffy computer vs books and that was Giles's argument. He loved the smell of books.

Mine is the old Kindle keyboard. It reads pretty close to a book (Mom has a Fire that she wants to give me because she doesn't like it -- I don't blame her. When we were poolside, I could read mine but her screen disappeared, the way a computer screen does in the sunlight.)

Yes, in a normal year, the winter rains start in October. I remember when it used to rain in October. (I think we've gotten about an inch in the last year -- hardly any winter rains AT ALL -- but I can't speak for what Tucson got off the top of my head.)

Yes, that was then -- in 1989, it rained so much in Phoenix the Salt River ran through town for MONTHS (it doesn't, normally -- it's stopped up at Roosevelt Dam). It was like that for a few lovely years. The first time I drove over Hoover Dam, the turbines were completely under water. Now they're about twenty feet ABOVE the water line. :/

Actually, fountains notwithstanding, Vegas is well known as one of the best-managed water cities in the Southwest. Their reclamation and water recycling is next to none.

Phoenix, on the other hand, has none at all.

there is that. However, all those water shows and swimming pools have humidified the area and are ruining surrounding areas ecosystems.

and that's just sad about Phoenix. It would be a huge help to AZ in general if people from my area would quit moving there and expecting to keep grass yards like they do here.

Well, you can say THAT about every Southwestern city, except MAYBE Tucson (go to Google maps to check out how many swimming pools per capita are in every city out here, from Los Angeles to Albuquerque!).

Yeah, it would. :( Of course, eventually, something will have to snap. We cannot continue to sustain the number of people coming here!
