This weekend is the Paw Paw festival (so glad they moved it off the Mothman fest's day). So I went back out to Lake Snowdon in Albany (near Athens for those following along).

It was perfect. Yes there were black clouds and wind but it never broke 70 (and it'll be 40 tonight. Oooo sleeping weather!). I loved it. And I did get there relatively early because it gets so crowded in late afternoon/evening (But I'm more interested in vendors than drinking so early afternoon is fine for me).

My friends couldn't come but that's okay. Let's me shop uninhibited which is probably a bad thing. I got a gift for Rain. I got an alpaca christmas tree ornament for Mom (and the alpaca who donated the wool tried to eat my shirt....always with the shirts). Speaking of shirts the Athens Historical society was there with the Athens Lunatic Asylum on their shirt and I had to get me one of those.

I, of course, got the commemorative glass (even if it had a catapiller on it) and I got only one of the beers this time. I got 'cookie duster' which was a Belgian Rye with peppercorns and paw paw in it and it was emerald green for some reason and I had to keep explaining to everyone what it was. It was yummy. As was the gyro I got. I wanted to bring home a lamb/goat kebob for dinner but they kept telling us 5 more minutes to cook it before it was clear it was going to be an hour or more before it was ready. Besides, it was long enough for me to see granddad. I've seen him at the farmers' market and he's unpleasant (and their food wasn't that good) so I passed on my goat. Sigh.

I listened to some Native American flute and several other bands. I did pass on the henna tatt because the wait list was 'at least a couple hours.' Oh hell with that. My tree of life purse was a huge splash. Complete strangers kept asking me about it.

I also got Mom a glass bowl and the young man (17-21) who made it was thrilled someone bought his bowl. It's a pretty blue swirl. I also bought from a lady in Cincinnati a sacred geometry glass pendant. She saw my bag and said 'hey i have a glass tree of life' which she did. I could have bought that AND the glass octopus pendant and the octopus ring but I restrained myself. Check out her stuff here rising phoenix glass. And it's funny that she does remembrance art. I was JUST thinking about that and a story (ghost naturally) with a character that did that painting wise but it might even be more interesting with glass. I would love to learn to do glasswork.

I didn't restrain myself when it came to buying another couple pounds of paw paws OR Sarah's Sweets fudge (dark chocolate/paw paw swirl, salted caramel and dark chocolate/chipolte). Yeah I KNOW I'm not supposed to have it but hell it's once a year.

If I had a place to display it (or if I had been sure Mom and/or SA would have liked it) I would have gotten a hand coiled basket made of pine needles! Can you imagine? Check her out here. My Coiled Creations

I couldn't resist the plants either. I almost bought some paw paws (as if I don't have hundreds of seeds to start my own). I did buy candy mint (smells like those red and white star mints), silver thyme, rosemary (mine died again. I have no luck with it) and a special sage from some German estate, Berggarten sage I did pass on the bonsai guys I bought from in Columbus. They did NOT bring any cheaper ones with them (or sold out yesterday) and I wasn't up to dropping 50$+ on a bonsai. I already spent enough, or so you'd think.

But no. Since I didn't get my goat I went to Rowdy's the BBQ place I talk about in Jackson. I never get the ribs because it's an evening only thing. The funny thing is I had to kill 20 minutes til rib time so I went to Big Lots and a student of mine works there. 'Remember when you were here last week? The dean was right behind you (really? I didn't see him) but he didn't recognize me and he and his wife went into the parking lot trying to see who I was. We only have 2 deans (both of whom know me well) and a third who doesn't and no longer works for us. Wonder if it was him.

Anyhow, the ribs were beyond amazing. They had such good flavor, I didn't even dip it in BBQ sauce like I usually do and they left on the costal cartilage so there was extra meat too. Also it had a lot of fat (I usually hate that) but it was so caramelized it was delicious. I had grease running into my wrists.

So now I'm broke and I ate too much and I have the mothman next week.

What a great day you had! More fun than mine, definitely.

Jealous of all your goodies.

Mom has a pine needle basket. I can't remember if she bought it, or one of the great aunts made it. She's had it forever. The Seminoles used to make them in FL, too.

To have the money for one of those remembrance necklaces (or more than one. We have Dad's ashes, after all).

it was fun

they're nice goodies

I've seen several tribes doing those sorts of baskets. I used to have earrings made of them but I have NO idea where they went.

they are cool necklaces

Sounds like fun! I've never had a paw paw. I didn't even know you could get them in the U.S. I always think of them as Baloo.'s fruit from The Jungle Book

Very nice goodies. Jealous of the fudge.

Very cool necklaces. I'm not exactly sure why she'd need photographs or things like that, but it's still a neat idea.

It sounds like you came home with a great haul. I can see why you got so many compliments on the Tree of Live bag, it's very cute. Looks like it holds a lot too.

That pine needle basket is very cool.

I did.

The purse is nice though I'm going to have to restitch the strap. It's starting to come undone, rather quickly too. It's no big deal though.

aren't they? It's a fascinating art

you should be jealous of the fudge

I didn't see that part. That is odd. I still want to use it in a story

they grow all over the place here. I know they're thru much of the mid-west. They're tasty if ugly.

I forgot Baloo had them

you obviously read that more deeply than I. But given the amount of religious (pagan) jewelry she had maybe there is that side of it to it for her

I was wondering if each one was somewhat different, though she doesn't actually come out and say that.

Though the pagan jewelry could indeed provide a clue.

They probably are a little individualized.

Working with glass, I'm sure they would be.
