feels like getting hit by a bus

Got a letter in the mail today from the lawyers representing my student loans. I was expecting it to be my court date yadda yadda. No, it's an itemized bill they want me to pay for the fees incurred by the people who are suing me. It's like WTF and oh my god. If I had the few thousand dollars they're charging, I wouldn't be going to court in the first place.

I have 5 days to protest this. part of those 5 days is a damn weekend and I got the letter too late to call my workman's comp lawyer (since I have no other lawyer) to ask for help. I have to call tomorrow before I leave to learn if my ankle is broken and PRAY they'll see me tomorrow after noon to explain my options. And thank you Southernbangel for helping me out this afternoon so I'm at least not so freaked that I can't think.

To top it all off the hand surgeon I'm supposed to see for this lawyer has moved and has NOT called me back to see if I can see him or if he wants me to go elsewhere back to his old practice.

It's like I can't even breathe.

Does the letter say a specific date or just the five days? Does it clarify whether or not it's five business days? Here when dealing with court dates, when someone says five days or seven days or whatever, it doesn't include weekends (unless you're dealing with the issuance of a subpoena).

Dayum! Wish I knew what to say/do. I'm not sure, but I do think that in some places "5 days" means "5 business days".

just says 5 days and I did misread it. that money is the 'reasonable attorny fees' that I'll be responsible for when the judgement goes against me and it's a judgement for the full amount...

That's just.... what is wrong with these people? Don't they need to win the court case before they can ask you to pay their bill for a start?

upon rereading the letter they're trying to keep it from going to court to keep MY costs down and I have to pay the full amount of the loan. If I could do that would going to court be needed?

Well, it sounds like your no worse of than you were before, they'll just need to take you to court, where they'll need to realise, they can't get what you don't have, it's probably a routine thing, just to send that out.

I'm assuming it is. WHat pisses me off is the FIVE days. Man, they send a lay person a bunch of legal documents and then make sure I have inadequate time in which to check with a lawyer
