Don't save it for good.
May. 16th, 2016 11:55 pmMy grandmother did it. My mother did it. I did it...until I moved here and the goblins in my head said why bother keeping it, you have NO ONE to give it to, you lonely idiot.
So I started using the 'good china' and never looked back. Mom is cleaning out grandma's house to sell it and is finding ALL these things grandma kept for good. It was for 'company' and even then rarely taken out because it was put so far away in the cabinets it was too much of a pain to get to it. Mom has turned out beautiful dishes, stunning glassware, pretty lace table cloths all things grandma kept for the good, for those special occasions. She found a blanket today and even I remember grandma fighting with us when we tried to put it on her bed. Keep that for good. Mom's comment:I should have buried her with it.
What good is that blanket doing anyone? What good are the dishes never used? These are the beautiful things you bought for yourself. Use them for YOU. Enjoy them. Or someday someone will be boxing away your things wondering why they never even saw them before.
It took me for fucking forever to try and make up postcards to take to the printshop at work. I wanted the backs to be different than the ones DSP made up for them. Mostly I wanted a quote on them instead a blurb (a mistake maybe) but more importantly I wanted MY QR code on it (crosses fingers I did that right) and MY contact info, not theirs (though their url is there too). I couldn't get this shit to line up. I KNOW I can get two post cards on a sheet and it would be cheaper but I couldn't line it up. I hope I did it right. I hope the print shop does it well. It's a one man show and he had the nerve to tell me 'I hope it doesn't come out upside on the back.' I'm like this is your JOB! Print one and see if it's right. If not flip the thing. WTF? I'm also a little embarrassed to give him Kept Tears. That one is obviously gay romance on the cover. None of my other covers are. I teach in a highly religious place so I'm a little worried. But I'd rather give the money to my school than vistaprint at this late date.
I just got the books sent. Cost me 150$. Yikes. Pray they sell, people. Seriously.
I did get a little boost today. The acquisition editor seems to like my stuff (she's mentioned it before but I forgot it. She was like the one person to tell me she loved Soldiers of the Sun). She was excited to see me send something and told me while it usually takes 8 weeks to hear back she's bumping it to the top of the pile. No one has ever said that before so maybe it's true. I'm going to believe it is.
I went to the school to do some work and check on my seedlings. thank god I did because I nearly lost several. I didn't realize the pots had no drain holes (seriously why do they even MAKE pots like that?) and they were swimming, literally. I just scooped it out. Also I stole some irises from behind the dumpster. I broke the corms so they'll probably die. Sigh. It's hard for me to bend and dig though.
Mom has better Googlefu than me because she found a couple of tours to Canada that I didn't. I really like this bus tour. Okay I don't REALLY want to ride a bus all the way there but it is a safe way for me to do this.
And she found this train tour which would be cooler than the bus but much more expensive and the one I liked the best is sold out. Sigh. And the 1,300$ one is cheap because part of the tour they kick you off the train and tell you to go rent a car to get to your next stop...
And when I was in Cincinnati I picked up tourist stuff. I've lived here a decade less than 3 hours away and how did I not know there was SO much fun stuff to do there. I'm thinking of these for labor day Cincinnati tours

Date: 2016-05-17 04:14 am (UTC)And I completely agree about saving things for good. I had some dishes put up at my grandma's house for my hope(less) chest. When she died and we cleaned the house out, I rediscovered them and they're in my kitchen in and easy place to get to, regularly used on nights when food is made fresh and not reheated because you can't microwave them due to the little metal edges. My mom was crazy about putting my toys up like that, saying I'd tear them up or that it would be worth money someday. As an adult, I took my cabbage patch dolls out of the box and played with them because I saw how little they sold for on ebay. I have never done that to Joey and I never will. Toys are to be played with, if they're worth something after, that's one thing.
THE EDITOR LOVES YOU! IT'S TRUE! Seriously, if you're getting bumped to the top of the pile, that's true love.

Date: 2016-05-17 04:30 am (UTC)Yeah some things might be worth money (sometimes if i can afford it, I'll buy two, one to keep one to use) but mostly I'm there to use up the things

Date: 2016-05-17 10:47 pm (UTC)The Canadian bus tour sounds like fun. Some day I really want to go around the Maritimes. Those provinces advertise with us and the ads are always so appealing.

Date: 2016-05-17 11:59 pm (UTC)That's awesome your editor LOVES you!! Maybe it's a sign that things will work the way you want them to! :D And my copy of Soldiers came while I was away. :D I woudl have loved to have brought it with. :D
Pretty things should be used & put out where you can see them everyday! Although, we're guilty of keeping it for company too. Maybe I can talk mom into pulling out her wedding china for Shabbat dinners. :D
I'm glad you saved your plants! Those pots without holes are decorative & meant to hide the ugly lil pots most plants come in. XD Those irises might surprise you. I dug up a bunch from my granny's old house, cuz they were starting to over run her garden & I broke some, damaged the roots on others, but I still planted them & they not only took, but I noticed where I planted them in front of the backyard fence (It's set back between the houses & lines up with the neighbor's since he & dad bought it together)they've crept under it & are starting to grow in the backyard side! Plants are a lot tougher than we think.

Date: 2016-05-18 01:12 am (UTC)Using for Shabbat would be good and not too hard on them.
I hope so but they were laying over a bit but I don't think I put the roots deep enough.. But you're right Irises are hearty

Date: 2016-05-18 01:37 am (UTC)Yeah. It's supposed to be festive, so they would definitely work. :D Plus they would be nice to use for other holidays too, like thanksgiving. :D
They're probably a lil shocked at being dug up & moved. just keep watering them, give them a lil food & they should bounce back. And if if they do die off this year, they just might surprise you by coming back with a vengeance next year. :D Yup! :D

Date: 2016-05-18 01:40 am (UTC)That's usually what we used our 'good stuff ' for, thanksgiving/christmas
This is also true and of course it's cold and raining but tomorrow I'll go make sure the dirt didn't wash away

Date: 2016-05-18 01:52 am (UTC)Yeah, that's what most peeps do with the "good stuff." I agree with you that we should use it more often & I'm going to try to.
*nods* They might nit be too happy with the cold & being moved, but the rain is definitely good. Today the rain we got was a tease. XD I went fro a walk after work, & it looked like rain, so I decided to just go around the block & was glad I did when it started raining, but that's all it did; sprinkle a few rain drops. XD I was hoping it would rain more than it did, as the hydrangea I planted before I left for the weekend, was looking a bit sad. I think it was upset I moved it from the kitchen (by the sink, so it could get plenty of water, which it needed) to outside next to my other hydrangeas & the lone azalea in the small raised bed next to the driveway. I had big bare spot, where an older azalea died last summer. I had one of those wave petunias there & it did nicely, but I haven't seen any this year. *buys my garden flowers in the supermarket*
