Randomness

Did something today I don't usually do, sleep in massively. (okay it was still only 8 hours of sleep but for me that's so unusual) I did miss going to the bank but at least I got the packages mailed out before the rate hike on monday (but only because the  boss wasn't there to lock the door. I snuck in ten minutes past closing and I was far from the last!!)

When I got back and waded through the tub of mail here I found that none of the stuff I ordered as gifts, went thru the trouble of making gifts with all the extra paperwork were mailed as gifts. Sigh. Now I have all this stuff HERE! But on the bright side I did get a card from

[livejournal.com profile] rahirah  that was so pretty I had to go to the site on the back to look at what else they had.

Spent all day in a very boring faculty meeting (got a lot of writing done!) but the final activity was worth it. I now have a faculty web page. It's a little bare right now but once I get going I'll I let you see it. If you have cool science links feel free to pass them on to me. My school schedule is schizo. I have like nothing to do mon-wed. Then on thrusday & Friday I'm scheduled from 830AM to3:30 without a single break! Well there's going to be one messed up and probably hungry professor by the time lab rolls around.

I tell people that I am in reality a chaos elemental but no one believes me. When I went home for the holidays, the tub started leaking, the water pressure dropped and finally three days before I leave, the roof leaks. My dad calls me last night to tell me I can't come home any more. The day I left the roof stopped leaking, the tub stopped leaking and the water pressure is back. He's convinced it's me! And then yesterday the disc with all the powerpoints and everything that I had from home in PA which also works here in OH, did NOT work at work. It said the disc was blank. I couldn't figure out how in the world that could be but sure enough there was nothing on it. I brought it home and put it in mine thinking maybe I accidentally picked up a blank since I was burning stuff. Nope, at home it has all teh ppts, the word docs and the photos. weird.

I know I had more randomness to post but I can't think of what it is.

Got five new (to me) cd's and wanted to share them.

Sweet Release & Ghost Story: Two New Ballets - Wynton Marsalis. From the exceedingly talented Marsalis family, Wynton is not just an amazing trumpeter, he's a talented composer, hailed as the best since Ellington. The trumpet vocabulary in Sweet Release is astounding and comprises the first five cuts. I preferred Ghost Story to be honest, not even knowing the ballet 'plot' is of a chinese ghost fox spirit girl which just makes it that much more interesting.

Scenes in the City - Branford Marsalis. I'll admit it, I prefer Branford to Wynton simply because I play sax (okay I play around with sax). I can't even imagine executing the finger-breaking licks in these songs. Scenes in the City (from Charles Mingus) combines narrative, jazz and street songs in a way to make you just feel the place but my favorite was "Solstice" inspired by John Coltrane's "Equinox." This cd was over far too soon.

Willow Weep for Me Wes Montgomery -This was me stretching myself. I'm not a huge fan of jazz guitar but I really enjoyed this. Wes passed when I was just a year old back in 68 (and he had no idea this particular set had been preserved). He was a legend in his time selling millions. Listening to this you know why. My favorite "Oh you crazy Moon."

Wreck of the Day - Anna Nalick - I fell in love with "Breathe 2 AM" and put this on my christmas wish list. I'm very glad I did. I like her breathy alto tones and I like the lyrics. There is a certain sameness to some of her songs but she's relatively new so I'm forgiving. I need to listen to this more to find a favorite.

Duran Duran's Greatest Hits That's the fun thing about greatest hits, you get all the good stuff and little of the dross. I love just so many of these. It takes me back to my college days and that's a good thing

And the promised lyrics. I just heard this song today on the radio and fell in love with the lyrics. They're lovely if sad and they'd fit so many characters (so if you're moved to write something, feel free and let me know where to find it)
