Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed.
I think that what surprises memost is that elusive quality that explains why we're drawn to one fandom and not another even though the source material has stuff we like. Or even the degrees to which we're drawn to our respective fandoms. There are fandoms that I can easily crank out dozens, if not hundreds of stories of any length and on the other hand, there are those that I get out a few drabbles and never have another bunny again. Points to my Vinland Saga icon. I like this manga very much but I don't see it catching my muse on fire.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiyuki, Elfquest & Star Trek I have written volumes (especially the first two on the list). I can't tell you what it is about those vs my many other fandoms that really got the muse going. Some do, some don't. I've been hanging in on fandom for 37 years now. From paper zines to forums to email groups to blogs, websites and now even a podcast or two.
What isn't a surprise is the creativity of the fans.
