Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed.

I think that what surprises memost is that elusive quality that explains why we're drawn to one fandom and not another even though the source material has stuff we like. Or even the degrees to which we're drawn to our respective fandoms. There are fandoms that I can easily crank out dozens, if not hundreds of stories of any length and on the other hand, there are those that I get out a few drabbles and never have another bunny again. Points to my Vinland Saga icon. I like this manga very much but I don't see it catching my muse on fire.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiyuki, Elfquest & Star Trek I have written volumes (especially the first two on the list). I can't tell you what it is about those vs my many other fandoms that really got the muse going. Some do, some don't. I've been hanging in on fandom for 37 years now. From paper zines to forums to email groups to blogs, websites and now even a podcast or two.

What isn't a surprise is the creativity of the fans.

Hospice called and grandma does have a respiratory infection, you know like Mom and I said yesterday and were poo-pooed. This nurse was shocked the other nurse couldn't have noticed this. It might be the end for grandma, or not. Too early to say. It's not the worst thing given her quality of life. It's draining my mother all of this.

I'm dealing with my own depression. Today has been very bad but I did get everything packed up. I'll be going home tomorrow. I'm not really ready for the semester. I haven't slept in days (full moon).

Tried to go to the church today to help mom water the christmas flowers and take one (they're giving them away this weekend) and Father hadn't bothered to have it plowed out. So much for that.

Did I mention Mom found my original sockmonkey she made for me? She put it in the freezer to kill any mites and we just soaked him in tide and clorox and he's somewhat cleaner. Stitched his tail back on. Now I have a 40+ year old sock monkey.

From the snowflake challenge - still surprised by fandom after nearly 40 years in it

ETA - Hospice just called the family in. Mom wants me to stay here in case phone calls come in and there just isn't room in the assissted living room for everyone.
