Salem

So I forgot to mention I got two rejections in one day on Monday but one was so nice I don't even feel bad. I had made the finals at least. The other was for the one that said yes to my query so at least I got that rejection in a day.

Today I shoved three stories back out the door and I will be in a flash fic anthology as Jana later this year (for the love market, my friend does this one so I don't mind no pay since the story has to be under 300 words). One of the ones I sent to was Apex which is SWFA and a very well paying market. Not holding my breath. I might take that one ghost story and call it a Shining homage for the Stephen King homage anthology, very low pay but that's okay with this one.

This is the last of my vacation days because the day after this was just me hanging with friends at their place catching up. Fun for me but not the most interesting of blog posts.

So I went to Salem. I wanted to stay for Salem for days but right now with their shit parking and the cost of the hotels I didn't. I didn't get to do the ghost tour either by choice. It was too. damn. hot. AND my leg had given up after 8 days of non stop walking.

I decided that I had to go to Salem early because of the parking issues. I knew parking was at a premium and the parking garage had two floors closed for repair. I Googled several possible places. I thought I had programmed in a parking garage but my first destination was a parking lot. Pay by coin. I had left my quarters in the hotel because I thought it was a garage. I had a dollar put them in and then see the lot across the street. It was public and you pay by credit card and there was a handicapped one over there. I gave my dollar to someone else, raced over, parked, struggled to pay (because OMG screens all turn black in the sunlight and you can’t see shit) and I was off into the heat. They had closed Essex street where I wanted to be but that worked to my advantage, no cars = easier to cross streets.

I went to Gulu-Gulu café for a coffee because still no one is open but coffee shops and breakfast joints. The Nutty Professor was good but I didn’t realize to much later in the day after I left Salem that instead of giving me change, my server took my ten and just gave me back a five and five ones. Ooops.

I headed for the two places I really wanted to see since I missed them last visit: the Witch House and the Peabody Essex museum . If I had time I thought the Pirate museum could be fun with people dressed as real pirates and relating history? Yes please.

The witch house was easy to find sans help have bad luck with Ways and didn’t even remember to put it on Mom’s phone. Besides I generally have a good sense of direction. John Corwin was one of the judges in the trials and this is his house. They have a lot of actual stuff from that time period in there and much of it was actually Corwin’s. I was very happy to see it and upstairs they had something I’ve not seen before: colonial medicine. There were recipes for using bone, blood and fat from murderers as meds. Skull moss (grown on a skull) was used as well. I was hoping to see where they got it from. I didn’t (nowhere did I find a book anywhere in Salem on the topic). I think I’m going to email them and ask.

I picked up some holiday treats and a little poster of a recipe for my office. I ask which way to the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) and she didn’t know right from left as it turned out. I was partially to blame because I took her directions and ignored a) signage right outside the house as in I didn’t even SEE it until the return trip b) knew I was obviously going into residential area and kept going for a few blocks. To be fair I could see a big building a few blocks down and it could have been the museum. It wasn’t. It was the library (pee break).

I go back the way I came but there was a bit of a lucky find down the wrong way: the Ropes mansion’s garden. It was lovely, prettier than the botanical garden and the azalea garden. It was a nice break. I did get onto the pedestrian part of Essex and trudge to the Peabody Essex and at that point I would have paid anything to get inside with the a/c because it was like 98 degrees. I had no idea a) it was this big b) the oldest museum in America from 1799. I didn’t even get to the third story with fashion/design because by the time I was ready to go it was nearly 2 pm and I hadn’t eaten yet. It was an amazing collection of Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Native American, Maritime collections, there was an entire 200 year old house from China that cost more to see and I ran out of time to get to it. I had only paid for 6 hours of parking and by the time I ate and did some of the shopping I wanted to do it would by the time I ate and did some of the shopping I wanted to do it would have ran out. I would have paid for more but I was meeting a friend for dinner so I didn’t have ALL day.

Went back to Gulu-Gulu for a sour beer (realized belatedly it had grapefruit which I’m not supposed to have) and a strawberry/Nutella crepe (speaking of things I’m not supposed to have) I hit the shops. I wanted to get pizza (for lunch and breakfast the next day) and go to the crow’s haven (the oldest of the pagan shops) BUT both were in the wrong damn direction and at this point I needed to start back the way I came because my parking was within the hour or so of expiring. I did hit a few shops, got more gifts, passed on a pretty Diana pendant (not really my goddess) and a labradorite ring (price).

I did get to meet up with [personal profile] dragonydreams later for dinner. That was nice. I actually got there a half hour early because I gave myself an hour to get there because of traffic. I hit Lane Bryant only to find it’s not just Macy’s that now has ugly summer clothes (for that matter so does the three online sites I use too). DD and I had a nice dinner. It was fun catching up.
