Today had some true weirdness
Mar. 2nd, 2023 10:01 pmThe micro test...I'm not brave enough to look at it. I had a long assed meeting right after it and got home late so eh. The weirdness...how HARD people are pushing the CCP program. It allows h.s. kids to take college classes. Okay this isn't new. I did it but it's so different now and a lot of it I DO. Not. Like. (none of us did) they can now get an associate degree before graduating high school (on our taxes) so you can see the parents liking that. BUT it's really not like it was, something you put the top students in. Pretty much if they're a C+ student they can do this so we are getting so many students, flooding out the spots of the for-pay college students AND they're not emotionally and often educationally prepared for college (and we're expected to drop our quality because this is a money maker. Oh they don't say that in words but you know...)
I like the stated objective (which is not to get an A.S.) 'college/career' exploration. I think that's a great idea. Heck let them take classes at trade schools too. I deal with completely ill prepared students all day every day who see allied health, especially nursing, as the golden goose. A good paying job in 2 years, you can see the allure (they'll be making more than me who went to college for fucking forever) but they're terrible at science and with zero exploration of other possibilities, we have miserable students who end up feeling like failures. I wish the h.s. did a better job of showing students what is all out there instead of holding up a handful of degrees.
Other weirdness is this, remember Mrs. Nubs? the disabled and endangered terrapin who was stolen from my building. She's back. She was, in theory, 'found by fisherman in the pond.' Now she is an estuary turtle requiring brackish (salty) water. It seems highly unlikely she survived since Sept in the wild. (she has no front feet) We suspect two people as being involved but we can't prove it. The problem is, she's in very poor condition and still could easily die. I still feel very bad about this so hold a good thought for Mrs. Nubs.
And in the good news I got my novel contract!! I haven't read it yet (as I'm too tired to make sense of it) but it's really happening.
AND my Short Look at the Long History of Medicine in Wales talk was accepted as a workshop at my human anatomy and physiology conference in Albuquerque. I've never spoken at a professional convention before. I'm excited.
The temperature is thirty degrees colder again today. This up and down is murder. It's really amping up my winter eczema too. I spent the meeting bleeding from my fingers. Now up close three of the holes are actually fairly wide (the skin is just splitting open). Sigh.
