Lilyfest

Because I can't talk about what happened in PA today because they are thoughts I hate even thinking and don't want to put into print.

As promised here is my Lilyfest write up. So my GPS took me the long way there. It's not close FYI it's 40+ miles in the Hocking Hills and there was one gas station on US93 that I thought didn't I used to turn there? But it's been nearly 10 years since I've been to this fest (which feels unreal but I quit working summers with my last shoulder surgery and I think that was like 2014 or something) Maybe that's how I get to my friend's cabin in the woods. Regardless it's a good thing to go the long way because it takes me right past Old Man's Cave. There's a lodge there and I'm like last time at Lilyfest there were 3 portapotties. I stop at the cave park to pee.

And it is PACKED. There are 3 parking lots of considerable size and almost all are filled. Holy Shit. It's like 1230 on Friday and it's 98 fucking degrees out (about 10 degrees cooler in the woods) WHY are 500 fools in the woods? (This is why I don't go to that cave until late fall. It's gorgeous and too popular).

I go another 10 miles up the tiny-assed road to the fest. It is very much unchanged in the last decade. The same 3 portapotties, the same two stages with um...less talented local bands (they aren't awful but this is likely the pinnacle of their careers), the plants (only one vendor) and some of the very same artists. Also some artists who are seriously delusional in their pricing.

Right off the bat I found 2 artists I knew I'd come back to, one doing pendants of semi-precious stones with wire wrapping (10-80$ depending on size and stones) and someone doing glass paperweight (of which I get mom one a year because she loves glass and I'm gonna own 50 of the damn things when she passes). Later I find like 3 other stone/wire wrappers and seriously delusional with 150-250$ on the wraps. That better be gold. I have friends who do this. I know the value of their time and the stones and the first lady is much more in the ballpark. there was someone with neat ceramic plates with wooded night scenes but she had the shapes a little off kilter (like they squashed during firing) and prices in the triple digits. For an off kilter octagon plate I can get 3 muffins on? Nope.

Maybe the cost of vending there has greatly increased. Supplies surely have but some of them were pricing themselves out of most people's budgets. I saw a glass worker who did mosiacs. Her stuff was affordable but...the same pictures I saw a decade ago because I spotted the one I bought for evil little dog way back when. I didn't buy anything more there.

The ubiquitous mix-your-snack-dip dudes were there and since they gave me so many tester pretzels I felt like an oink so I caved and bought the 3 for 15$ (cinnabun, roasted garlic asiago, strawberry and weirdly the savory is half the size of the sweet).

And after nearly melting I spotted a new vendor: someone taking vintage post office box plates and making small storage boxes/piggy banks out of them. For the young folk, back in the day your p.o. box had a combination lock on it. They were often pretty. The Chippy Beaver had them from 1900-1970. I didn't want the latter as they were the things of my childhood and not quite as ornate. I was eyeing the art deco 1920s ones. Now type of wood made the price vary (which yes understandable because there is a big variation in price) Was this more than I wanted to pay? Yes. Did I walk away? Yes. Did I walk back and buy one? Yes. 1920s in hickory. I love it dearly.

After just over an hour I had been thru it all and it was too damn hot to stay longer so I went back to the two vendors from the start of this and got mom a paperweight (downright cheap) and confused him when I said I'd put his deets on social media (dude I get you're a boomer but seriously is it so confusing that I'm trying to help??) I stopped at the wire wrap lady with the reasonable prices and dicked around forever (literally had to dry my hands on my pants twice because I was too sweaty to be comfortable touching anything) I finally settled on a fossil rock and hobbled out of the woods (stopped by a lady about 15-20 years older than me going wish I had brought MY cane. Really? Did you not know there is nothing but bare dirt/gravel paths?)

I also bought mom a Little Judy lily (her name is Judy) and the bare roots of a prairie blue lily. I got some super pink bare roots for me. Let's see if I can plant it tomorrow.

Going home it started me back the way I came and then on US 56 it decided let's go this way (I did stop back Old Man's Cave again to pee and grabbed a gatorade out of the vending machine because I was dying) this way was NOT right. After two turns I was sure of it. I'm like Creole-hue road?!? I KNOW my friend's cabin is out that way. That's not the way home. Then it goes turn left on Stein. Stein is two ruts with some gravel and grass in the middle. Oh fuck no, you possessed GPS. I turn around back to 56 and literally 2 miles later I'm on 93 which is the road all the way home. Um WTF?

Last night/this morning I was having a weird dream. I can't remember all of it but I was in this old house with my mother and her sister's two daughters (my cousins are older than me). Something was in the walls. Like a haunted something. It was trying to drag my mother into the walls. I was stopping it with my psychic abilities but my two cousins were oh no you can't do that? You need Jesus. So I grabbed my holy water from St Winifried's well in Wales and started splashing it into the hole in the wall and said YOU two pray. You're better at it than me and went back to using my powers. The holy water turned into a gel for some reason but I got the thing beaten back and kept mom out of the wall. My brain is weird.

Have pictures of the Bishop Educational Gardens for Lilyfest and my magic beans )
