Spent the day in an online class workshop, for better or for worse most colleges want ALL classes on line now whether or not it's a good idea. I lack a lot of tools for web design (though I'm hoping to pay my webmistress this summer and have a one on one immersion course). I need to figure out photoshop too. If I can't, I WON'T be working. Wish me luck

And on the upside I didn't piss off the school in Hot Springs. I have a phone interview tomorrow. In Ecology. Yes, I did just spend 3 years working hard in ecology in FL. Here's hoping I can remember stuff and better yet figure out a way to apply it to the Hot Springs area because for me, the heart of an ecology class is going out in the woods and DOING it. I've never been there. Research mode here I come.

It would have been helpful if I had slept at all last night. Maybe tonight...since my interview is at 10 AM tomorrow!

*crosses fingers* Good luck! Hopefully this is what you were supposed to have, and you're just going to kick ass and the job is yours.

The power of positive thinking has to work for at least one of us. ;)

I taught an on-line critical thinking class back in '99. I initiated the idea in my department myself, and we had a discussion board and on-line exercises and a website that came from some on-line course site--Blackboard or something. The only time the students ever got together face to face was for the final. I couldn't figure out how to have an open-book final, which would have allowed them to take it at home.

Your subject matter lends itself well to 100% online. Mine doesn't. I could see of course putting the lecture material online but then there's lab. THAT'S a problem. There is no substitute for lab and mailing them their own sample pack of bateria (and some places ARE doing this) just doesn't cut it.

I think, however, we need to remember a lot of the faculty has no clue. I took one computer class b ack in 1986, nothing I learned there would help now if I had paid attention (I didn't. I used my then willowy body to make promises I had no intentions of keeping to computer geeks too desperate to notice they were getting played. I was bad.)

I would think that if most colleges want most or all of their coursework online, then they'd offer some means to implement such a plan. They should have designers/programmers on staff (and most do, if I'm not mistaken). I'd think it unreasonable to be expecting just that much more out of their professors, "oh, you need to be an expert in such and such field", and "oh, you need to publish, publish, publish", and "oh yeah, nowadays, you've got to be a programmer and a designer and web saavy as well."

It's a grand idea, but they need to make resources available to accomplish it, and not just have another failed experiment. Of course, it could also open the door for someone to come along and offer a solution to all of these universities out there.

And if your webmistress falls through, you do happen to know a rather talented designer/webworker and an engineer...

Bacteria by mail? Isn't that a form of terrorism?

yes sir it is granted the stuff used in lab isn't harmful BUT I'd prefer to not be mialing out home bioterrorism kits

You hit the nail on the head. The thing is they figure if they make the professor do it, it's one more web designer they don't have to hire.

Indeed I do. And thank you. If I get the Hot Springs job me and chris can throw stone at each other. We'll be pretty close

thanks. I'm getting off line right now in preperation for the call. Found out OH is checking my references so it's likely I might have that job.
