Snippet - The tall woman squatted down, brushing her fingers over his shoulder. “Yes. I know that it is rarely smart to make rash decisions but if you’d like to never have to go home to that again, come with us. I could always use another boy around the workshop.”
“W-what?” He stammered.
“Mom likes to take in strays.” The girl grinned.
“Arria, that is rude but close to the truth.”
Zvon narrowed his eyes, picking himself off the wet sidewalk. His side hitched, nearly sending him back to his knees. “But you don’t know me from a cracked Agloen. Why do you want me? You ain’t taking me to a workhouse!” He’d heard horrors about those places. He was better off with his father. What if mages used people in experiments? He had no idea.
“Nor do you know us but trust that I do not like the idea of you having to face a man who could beat you like that.” The woman’s lips tugged into a thin line. “As Arria said, I do like to help those in need, and if you’ll forgive the presumption, you need help.”
Lumps had formed all over him from his father’s kicks. The stump of his arm bled from where he scraped it on the sidewalk. “Yeah, I do. What the heck, I’ll go.”
