Small World
May. 14th, 2019 09:23 pmI went to hear Susan "Granny Sue" Holstein. It was billed as a storyteller of Appalachian stories of murder and mayhem. It was actually a balladeer and we spent the evening talking ballads, where they come from, how do they change and how they can vary from singer to singer. What makes it a small world is I put this in my writers group FB page and my friend MKF says I KNOW HER! And so she does.
It was fun. One of my favorites was one of the Childe ballads I had forgotten about (some of my SCA group as into these) This is close to the lyrics she sang for The Devil and the Farmer’s wife I've shared two version. The gentleman's version is closer to the Childe ballad but Heather's is more melodic.
We shared songs we knew. Of course the only two I could remember is Tam Lin with it's many refrains (some ballads can have nearly 100 stanzas) and twa corbies (because of course I know this one, thank you Steeleyed Span)
I also got lucky today because I got both a long delayed birthday gift from Flippy (yeah my b-day is a month away but this was ordered a while back) Abney Park's latest cd which I'm enjoying and
0_mother_0 sent me free comic book day books. I can never get there because it's always graduation day. AND the last time I did get to one (and luckily snagged the Hellblazer I wanted) that comic book place was sad and I never want to go back but also limited you to one. Mother's store allows one of EACH volume so I have a stack to work through now!
