1999
She stares at me, tracing my pictures with a finger. There’s so many of her within my pages. I record her reign as queen of Sunnydale High and yet, I spark no memories in her. I might as well be a stranger. She doesn’t recognize the names of my Memorial Roll or understand that I’m the last of my kind. The 2000 yearbook will record an all-new school. I should be a window to her past but there is nothing left there. All I cause her is frustration and tears. Silently she puts me away.

Outgrown Toy
Holtz made me for him, a little stuffed toy of leather and fur. I quieted my boy’s tears when he had a nightmare. He cuddled me when he slept. He’s getting bigger now and his father thinks he’s outgrown me. My boy fights to keep me. I’m his only friend, his only playmate. We’ve crawled through the grass together, climbed trees, slain monsters and were king of the world. My time can’t be over. My boy wails as I’m ripped from his hands and consigned to the fire. Father insists it’s time for my boy to grow up.
