Survived my first week
Aug. 25th, 2005 11:06 pmYes, I have three day weekends all this semester and thank god for it. Today's my long day from 1030am -9pm including 3 hours with the nursing students. Well today's technological fiasco...you knew there would be one right? I'm in one of the only two smart rooms (of course it's the nurses, I've yet to be to a college that doesn't pamper them...and yes, I'm still stunned how tiny little Nicolet could have smart rooms and this place not...)
No one has told me HOW to run it. There's buttons all over the podium...i'll figure it out as I go, right? WRong. Well for once I can't make the powerpoint projector turn on. Worse, the computer won't let me sign on with the generic 'guest' log in we use on the portable laptops. So, I go thru the syllabus with the students then go on early break and ask the nursing secretaries because they 'know everything' according to the students (who introduce me as the physics teacher. I'm glad they know the name of the class they're taking) Well i just needed to put my usual school sign on here and the projector's controller is hidden so they had to show me where. Simple. We're flying through the PPT when I hit a wrong button and everything dies. I do eventually get it back but argh.
They told me I was going at JUST THE RIGHT SPEED. I could have kissed them. No one's ever said that to me before.
I have a huge break between them and my night class (like 4 hours, two of which are office hours) so I figure I'll work on my PPT for next week. Well teh emailed one died in transit. Sob. So no problem, I know what images I want. I know that disc won't work here. I'll just pull of the images there and email them. No dice. Too big. CC, the other new hire, stops in to tell me how she's modified lab so I can do the same tonight and I ask her how to use the flash drive she was letting me borrow. Turns out it's dead. I'll try to buy one (maybe when I'm driving to chillicothe to get those pillows). It would save huge gobs of trouble in transporting and using these PPTs
Lab went okay except for some young ass hats who want to goof around and see if i'll fail them. They failed last year because they screwed up lab. Guess we're going for two years in a row.
CC and I are going for drinks at Bennigans. If they don't have that Granny Apple Mead drink, heads will roll
