It went well
May. 27th, 2023 10:10 pmThe school is very nice with lots of roses. Though I was a little disappointed in that in spite of how pretty it was. It's a desert (and a science building) so you'd think they'd be using xeroscaping (desert planting) Oh well. The day was absolutely beautiful. I even sat outside at lunch.
I attended a workshop that was a combo study (probably better as an update talk than a workshop) on hydralics and the physics of flow and vortices formation. It was fascinating to watch irregularities in a blood vessel, like plaque, causing a vortex to spin up and damage the endothelium of the blood vessels. They liked my question about looking at ehleros=danlos patients with meandering vessels
The workshops on case studies as a teaching tool wasn't really anything different than I already do but had some slightly different approaches and that was good. Another was on creating a treasure hunt as a teaching tool. She does it both semesters, a physical one around the campus in the fall (helps them to get to know the campus too) and one online. I love the idea. I'd probably only do it online to help them figure out the teaching software because I have a lot of freshmen who are lost.
My presentation went very well indeed. It was a small group, not surprising since it was a 'for fun' one vs something actually usable in the classroom. Several of them looked very into it with questions and what have you. one was my former coworker and her new coworker. I appreciated that she came.
After that I did skip the last session because I wasn't feeling great and I did want to get to Lindy's diner without having to walk alone later in the evening. I got there and it was CLOSED. Now I looked online and it was supposed to be open. sigh.
It was just across the street from that high end food court I've been having meals at and I got the Thicc Pizza (and some blueberry/lime aqua fresca from the taco joint while I waited). I had their 'Brooklyn' which is ironic as this is Detroit style pizza (If you're unfamiliar, it's made in the high sided square trays used in detroit's car manufacturing heritage and the sides are piled HIGH with cheese which is cooked to frico stage (i.e. hard) and is more along Chicago's deep dish style). I've not had that before. This had pepperoni, basil, hot honey and sweet pickled jalapenos. Okay I've never had those before but they were delicious and now I'm going to be trying to recreate this in a thin crust. And the young man who made the pizza saw me struggling to get up off the low chair with my cane and he brought my pizza to me. Nice guy. Glad I had already tipped well.
More tomorrow with the workshops and then...vacation. I feel ill prepared. I had wanted to see the turquoise museum but I thought the asking price was a tad high. So as much as I love that stone (not to mention SW Indigenous Peoples artwork with it) I put it out of mind. Tonight coming back on the bus from the workshops there was this AMAZING 'house' with dragon/lion/something gargoyles on them and I'm like WHAT is that. I noticed the museum was next door. Get the addy go google earth it. I think it IS the museum. Hmmm

Some Things I've Learned Here
Date: 2023-05-28 12:27 pm (UTC)Places being closed--the teasing joke about this area is "carpe manana". Some businesses post the hours they are open, then work just whatever they want! It's a bit of a culture shock from Ohio, I know. But it's a thing here. :)
Pizza--when we arrived in Las Cruces in 2014, we were shocked to discover hardly anyone but the big chains knew how to make pizza, and there were no steak hoagies or Indian food. Whaaaaaa...t?? Since then, a few trendy pizza places have arrived in town, and one Indian restaurant (which received a health dept violation notice recently). Still no Italian steak hoagies. No really good Chinese food, but Thai Delight does well.
New Mexico makes up for all this, though, with its incredible beauty, temperate climate most of the year, and kind people. (She's pretty, hospitable, and makes some MEAN Mexican fare.) :D

yes definitely heavy on the Mexican food but I did find a few good pizza places in Albuquerque. I didn't see much in the way of Asian food period or Italian now that I think about it.
