Fashionista
Jul. 20th, 2023 11:15 pmToday Mom and I went to Phipp's Conservancy for the fashion and flowers. If you know anything about Pittsburgh, you know this not necessarily an easy thing. Pittsburgh suffers from a) being hemmed in by very steep hills b) sitting on a triangle of land between three rivers c) piss poor city planning dating back to the 1700s. It is a frakking NIGHTMARE to drive around and the traffic is insane.
Phipps itself dates to 1892 and borders University of Pitt (dating back to the 1700s itself). It's almost at the crest of a hill and has zero parking. they basically took the turn lane of the highway and made that parking and luckily for me and mom the sidewalk parking is handicapped zone so we got a good spot. It's a beautiful conservancy and I WILL share pictures but not tonight (mostly because it's storming badly and I want this out quick also I drank an awful lot of black velvet toasted caramel Canadian whiskey) The idea was fashion and flowers and it turns out some of the designs were from places like the met gala and others were designed for this. Billy Porter (a native son) put this together. It was a lot of fun. I'll talk more about them when I get the pictures up in a day or two. One of my favorites was the aquaponics one where the manniquin body was a fish tank and her dress made up of living lettuce plants.
We don't often go here in the summer (usually we go for the Christmas displays) and it's saying something when it was cooler outside than in (and it was like 92 today) I ended up splurging on a juniper bonsai. It was 40$ but hell the pots alone can cost that much (I just checked and some are cheaper. Hmmmm more bonsais?? yes please). Hopefully I won't kill it because he was expensive. Also tossed in a red ionantha air plant to add to my murder list. I love that I do well with fiddly plants but easy care air plants? Yeah they die
I got home to something in my inbox, another reminder of an authors' zoom sprint tonight. Yes please (and the massive storm started like 90 seconds after we were done so thank you Mother Nature) It's a group doing mostly horror/fantasy/suspense. I do SO well in sprints because it gives me something to hyperfocus on so my lamented ghost story which has nothing but an idea since I saw the open call last friday got 1500 words written in an hour.
I would love to do more of these. I'd love to do it with some of my friends here but there is always that time zone issue (that said I'm open to the idea)
No community recs as I don't think I came across anything new. If you have something you'd like me to rec drop it in the comments.
