Waving from the struggle bus
Sep. 12th, 2023 10:18 pmBecause why the fuck not, am I right? today's debacle was a) Connect is not recording the students doing the assignment but only in one section (the other is fine) and McGraw Hill has no clue b) Canvas (in that same section) is not showing the notes to the students but other students CAN see it. It doesn't know why c) the new lecture capture software doesn't SHOW you recording yourself along with the lecture but it did (fan fucking tastic, an hour and a half of my ass in one of them in front of the class room and the other me, hair not combed, in a holey t-shirt. d) no instructions from anywhere on how to use this shit but I did figure out how to rename and you CAN edit yourself out (why not just not do it in the first place) which leads me to e) error messages on all attempts to do so. (probably my slow ass internet)
But there is good news a) my missing exam was found and deployed b) McGraw Hill called me out of the blue and we have some other issues fixed and I was right there was NO reason they couldn't have first day access and a real text book. c) we figured out and fixed the greenhouse problem (not in time to save my evergreen bonsais) someone had turned the water on full blast so instead of a gentle rain we were getting 'let's put a fire out' and everything drowned.
The ficus bonsai who went nuts...it burst it's pot and put a tap root into the big dirt holding pen. Guess who has to go in with the snippers?
I got a rejection on my Why Don't You Leave story. pouts.
And happy birthday to

So my fannish 50 I'm about out of time if I plan to write something tonight. So I've been thinking about how to find new things to read and support. It used to be easy. LJ and DW had scads upon scads of communities I couldn't possibly keep up with it all but how I handled it was I read what friends did. How did I get friends? Either they commented on my stories or a summary of theirs lured me in and I started reading (or looking at their art).
That has translated into the fan recs I do on friday. I FINALLY started using subscribe on AO3 about two years ago (slow I know)
But then LJ/DW communities thinned and moved to tumblr which is just not a forum I vibe with. Then onto twitter and now discord. I did that for Prodigal Son but honestly discord can suck up ALL your time and I haven't put it back on my new computer...yet (I will but not yet).
Prodigal Son fandom was definitely all twitter and discord (I barely even used twitter before that). The Owl House is the same (and Tumblr) so that left me wondering how am I going to keep up with my new fandom and thought, why the heck not the same way you used to? Yes you don't have the interactivity you did on DW/LJ but you can use the kudos and comments on AO3 in a similar way.
So I've been clicking on names and returning the reads. It's not as satisfying as DW/Lj but at least a) I have fanfic to read b) I'm supporting people who are supporting me and really that makes me happy

Date: 2023-09-13 06:08 pm (UTC)I have tried discord, but I couldn't really connect with it unless I spent a lot of time there. I should try again it has been a few years. I am on tumblr and I like it for the most part although I think both platforms aren't as good as LJ/DW back in the day.

Date: 2023-09-14 03:36 am (UTC)you know what discord reminds me of? AOL chats back in the day. My problem with the big fandom ones was too much drama. The ones were just me and a handful of friends was okay.
Tumblr and drama is why I never went there. the fandoms I was in when tumblr became a thing were so very toxic over there I never made the jump (
