A surprise to me as well. I'm trying to get out the Halloween decorations and I hear this 'pssst, you want to write a birthday ficlet for
a2zmom'. I'm like no I don't have time to do birthday fics much any more. 'Sure you do. Come on.' But I don't even like your show. 'You like the books, it'll work.' I'll let you all judge if it works or not. Happy birthday

Disclaimer - Bones isn’t mine. All rights belong to Kathy Reichs et al
Time line - rather superfluous for this
Pairing - Implied Booth/Brennan
Summary - Why exactly did he like her?
Author’s Note - Written for A2Zmom for her birthday
Booth couldn’t explain his attraction to Tempe easily. Brennan was nothing like his usual type. Her social cluelessness wasn’t particularly endearing and she had an ability to completely fluster him. If he was honest, there were times she was like sandpaper on bare skin. Logically he should be running for the hills, only he wasn’t. He wasn’t even slightly tempted to flee.
Seeing her here, like she was now, helped clarify his feelings. A day so hot and humid it felt like breathing through a wet sponge and the ground soggy from the storm the night before wouldn’t normally spell romantic setting for Booth and well, it really wasn’t. The storm had uncovered a body in the park and a jogger had stumbled upon it so now here they all were, standing in the mud and swatting mosquitos bigger than Schnauzers.
For whatever clumsiness Brennan might evidence in the ‘real world,’ here in the mud and muck she shone. Here, as she liberated some unfortunate from her makeshift grave, Brennan was delicate and precise. Her care and concern for the victim showed in how she slowly teased the bones from the earth. If Brennan had no time for pop culture, it was because she was so immersed in finding justice and speaking for the dead that she had no time for anything else.
Giving commands to her team, Brennan was nearly regal, even with her hair in a messy tail and mud up to her elbows. He could see a little grisly flesh clinging to the skull as she lifted it from the eath and knew Brennan would moan about that later. She didn’t like ‘green’ victims; those belonged more to the medical examiners realm, not hers but a only a little flesh meant Zack would be breaking out the flesh eating beetles. The mere thought of which made Booth’s skin crawl.
He saw Brennan’s eyes light up with both concern and enthusiasm for a fresh puzzle to tease apart as she noticed the strange cut marks that criss-crossed the skull. Her brow furrowed and Booth realized this was where she was at her most beautiful. Seeing her here, doing her best work, this was why he didn’t want to run. This was why she touched him.
So there you have it. My very first and likely only Bones ficlet. Now, can I go put up Halloween decorations, Booth? Okay thanks. Hope you all enjoy.
