1. Water – I might be an air sign but I’m much more aligned with water. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t swim. I love the ocean (being in it, not sitting on the beach), I never feel more at home than when I’m lakeside. My daily relaxation time is in the tub. I used to be more active in cleaning up the water supplies
2. Watermelon – I’m trying to grow them again. I’m failing but I’m trying. I love it. I love the fake candy watermelon too. One of my favorite fruits
3. Writing – my most favorite thing to do. What took me until #3 to think of it, I have no idea. I’ve been writing almost all my life. I’m prolific. I’m occasionally good. It’s something that even when I fall down and don’t want to do it any more, I always come back around quickly. It’s not a hobby. It’s a life style
4. Winter – my most favorite time of the year. Yes I can’t garden but I feel GOOD. My body doesn’t suffer. I love looking out over the cool white snow. I enjoy walking in it. Okay I’m not thrilled with ice on the roads but other than that I love winter
5. Wisconsin – I have lived across almost all of the United States. I’ve lived in WI twice. I would go back in a heartbeat. It’s got natural beauty. The people are as friendly as anywhere I have ever been. Madison is a great city. Upper Wisconsin is rugged and just amazing. The whole place with one or two exceptions is so clean you can barely believe humans live here.
6. Walking – While I often grumble about it, I do like to walk and hike. I’m reading Thicht nhat hanh’s walking meditation trying to use it to both exercise more and learn to relax better
7. Wind – I love the sound of the wind in the trees, especially when a storm is approaching I enjoy it so much I have cds of Aeolian harp music, harps named after Aeolus, the god of wind, i.e. slap a harp on a hillside and record what the wind plays
8. Wind instruments – yes this is cheating reusing a word but I maintain they’re two very different things (and this isn’t an easy letter). I have always been drawn to wind instruments and have been good with them. I’m far less good with string. I enjoy playing sax, clarinet and flute among others. I wish I had more time to play.
9. Waxing/waning – definitely cheating but it brings in my love of the moon and everything about her. She’s full as I’m typing this or darn near to it. I love the stages of the moon and love the piece of jewelry I made surrounding it.
10. Woods – I enjoy being in the woods. It’s another one of those peaceful, I belong here kind of feeling. For that matter I just like wood, the way it feels, the way it looks polished and stained, love the smell of it in a fireplace, all very comforting things.

As much fun as coming up with an entire giant background/backstory and all kinds of cultural quirks is, I do want to follow the idea that the FMA Anime!verse world is based off of Earth. This means research. Because the culture we learned in Japanese class isn't nearly enough to explain away every possible thing I'd need to come up with. Throw in the fact that Xing seems to be mostly Chinese-based from what we've seen, and that technically we can throw in a little something from every Asian culture, and you've got a monster bigger and worse than Godzilla.

Thank God for Wikipedia, and all its reliabe linkage. And my imagination. It will make frequent cameos.

yeah I use China for Xing myself. Right now I keep watching Bizarre foods with Andy Zimmer and his shows in Asia to give them some authentic cuisine

I like mixing them all up; that way I can take the best aspects of each and make a wonderworld that I can have hours of fun writing about. Uh, hopefully those hours of fic will be plot-relevant, of course.

I've always loved the idea of having Xing involved in some way or another with lots of FMA stories. I'd always thought that Roy was pretty Xingese-ish (he looks like it, we have no idea where he came from, etc.), and it'd just be something fun to play with. I'd actually been surprised when I started reading lots of different fic and seeing just how many people everywhere really shared that assumption/idea. It makes me happy, although sometimes I wonder of I won't get harped on for having it in-fic because of the lack of canon evidence or that I'm gonna cut something too similar to what someone else has already done somewhere. Ah well, that's why it's fanfic. =)

yeah i definitely assume Roy has Xing blood. Even before i saw the manga I figured he had to have foreign blood in him.

I like to think that he does, since it's plausible, perfectly normal, and adds more depth to a lot of things, and to the fact that he may not be Amestrian-born (I really doubt he is).

I've also seen the idea that Riza has foreign blood as well. The red eyes really give it away, and from what I've seen in fandom, it's assumed she may have Ishvarlan connections as well. I like to think that maybe she does, because it would be a perfect reason for her parents to have been estranged from their families as a result of mixed races that for the most part oppose each other, but then again, maybe she just got lucky in the chromosomal department. In reality, though, eyes like hers are somewhat impossible, seeing as the pigments in the human eye don't have the ability to create a noticeable reddish tint unless the body contains extremely low quantities of melanin. And that would have to make her an albino. YIKES.

Most of the time during the anime, they're reddish, or more red than brown, and I think that's where people get the idea to play with. I haven't seen many people who actively include it in fic, but I guess it's a nice and different twist on her history, and it DOES offer help to the argument of her estrangement (as a theory), even if highly unlikely. Ah well. That's fandom for you. =)

Maybe it's a little different for everyone, or just personal preference of choice,, but I DO know of a fic on FFN that actually explored the idea of her having Ishvarlan blood, and it was pretty well done, from what I can remember. I'll have to go look for it, if you want to see the speculation that went into it.
