HAPPY EARTH DAY

Earth day tidbit - The amount of wood and paper we throw away is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years
In other news, I didn't make it into the Semi-Finals of the Amazon Breakthrough novel. But THANK YOU to everyone who wished me well and wrote reviews. I'm not really surprised but I look at it this way, I beat out 9500 people to be in the quarter finals. That means something. Not going to give up now
And tonight is the faculty appreciation dinner at the winery being thrown by one of the frats. Outside of the worry that they're spitting and other stuff into the food, I'm looking forward to bottles of wine

Date: 2009-04-22 10:33 pm (UTC)Honestly, I'd really rather see people throwing away paper than Styrofoam. It really irks me when I go to a restaurant and they give me food in a Styrofoam box. That stuff does not ever ever EVAR biodegrade. EVAR. A paper bag or cardboard box (even waxed) will biodegrade in a few years in the landfill and yes, can be safely burned.
I do agree that we need to spend more effort in using waste like that appropriately. My grandmother's home was heated with a central heating stove, and we ALWAYS threw our waste paper and cardboard in the stove. There was no trash pick up, no landfill, so we had to be very conscious of the packaging things were in. What couldn't be burned in the stove had to be burned over on the hillside. (things like heavily colored boxes i.e. some cereal boxes would stink up the house if they went in the stove.) People just do not think about what they throw away any more. Once it goes in the trash can it's gone as far as they are concerned. I'm amazed when I see neighbors of mine put out three or four trash cans a week compared to me, where I might put out one every other week now that my daughter is living at home. before that I put a small trash can out once a month maybe, and a recycling bin full of cans, cardboard and the occasional empty milk carton. (which I'd prefer if I could still buy that in cardboard cartons.)
Sorry you didn't make the semi finals, but I'm sure you got some good feedback to guide you in further refinements of the story. What I read did catch my interest, and I'm not really all that into the whole vampire werewolf story scene. So if that says anything to you, I think you should definitely look to get it published.
