those funny names
Mar. 27th, 2010 12:06 amIt occurs to me that the boys WILL need to have last names if I am to give them a longer story. Naming things is hard. At least I have behind the surnames. Here's what I've got so far
Temple...sorry my boy but you're French.
Allard - from the given name Æðelred.
Bellerose - From a French place name which meant "beautiful rose".
Bonheur - From the French word bonheur, which means "good luck". See also Bonner.
Chevalier - Derived from chevalier, a nickname for "knight." Chevalier comes from cheval, the French word for "horse", ultimately from the Latin caballus.
(Frankly Temple, your dad hates you enough to name you Temple Chevalier, temple knight of the knights templar...just a tool)
Delacroix - In French it means "of the cross". It denoted one who lived near a cross symbol, or near a crossroads. (granted i'll be confusing you in my head with
wildrider's character
Fontaine - Derived from old French fontane "well". It was probably a nickname for a person living by a well. This is the 18th most common last name in France.
Lachance Means "chance, luck" in French. (okay not for serious here, but Temple Lachance does sound like a porno name)
LeBeau - "the handome one" from French le "the", beau "beautiful", "handsome". (well I like Gambit...i could probably remember this one)
Caleb, at least Welsh is a little easier.
Argall - Means "dweller in a quiet place" from the Welsh Argol.
Davies -Variant of Davis.
Evans - Derived from the given name Evan. (okay it's one of the top surnames in Wales but I'd feel weird using it)
Jones - Derived from the given name Jon (John). (sadly this might make the most sense. Caleb is adopted. He might have been given a bland name upon adoption by the order)
Maddox -Derived from the given name Madoc. (has some style)
Pryce - variant of Price.
Rhydderch - From the first name Rhydderch. A famous bearer of this name is harpist Llio Rhydderch. HOW do you say this? Okay RH is pronounced Hr-er-th-er-hairball noise.
Agni...sadly behind the surnames does a poor job on those from India so I had to search around and pull names from people I know as well

Date: 2010-03-27 04:53 am (UTC)Indian names are really, really hard. I haven't yet figured out Matt's mother's family (because "surnames" are extremely confusing in Indian culture!).

Date: 2010-03-27 02:12 pm (UTC)I also like Maddox as a last name, but Caleb Maddox is hard to pronounce because Caleb ends in a closed mouth consonant. Pryce has the same problem. I actually like Caleb Rhydderch, not that most of your readers are going to pronounce it correctly. I also like the idea of Caleb Jones being given a plain name by an orphanage.

Date: 2010-03-27 04:44 pm (UTC)I used the French surnames Bonchance and Valcoeur in constructing the New Orleans side of Frank Dollar's family tree. And there are always the wonderful descriptive names, like Dubois, Duboisblanc (yes, a real name), Desvilliers and Desjardins (I especially like this last one--I'd love to be Karen of the Gardens). Oh, and there's Joliecoeur, also a real name. The really Catholic names, like Dieudonne (gift of God) maybe not so much.

Date: 2010-03-27 05:11 pm (UTC)I had also considered Rhys for Caleb but just about every Welshman I have gets tagged with it

Date: 2010-03-27 05:15 pm (UTC)Caleb Jones or Davies would probably make the most sense for him.
Ramachandra is an interesting choice

Date: 2010-03-27 05:45 pm (UTC)Indian names really are. I couldn't quite follow the Indian naming customs so I pretty much generated a list of my doctors and my friends above (most of which seem to be punjab in origin if wiki is to b e believed)

Date: 2010-03-28 02:28 pm (UTC)Temple Chevalier is just...perfect. And evil. Make him a "The Third" just to stick it in even deeper.
Nothing on Agni. But you expected that.

Date: 2010-03-28 04:47 pm (UTC)Poor Temple. He doesn't even get a real name.
I might have Pushpa and Sangita help me with Agni

That's a good idea.
