I guess in a way the con started the day before we went up there with evil_little_dog helping me with the costume (thanks). She did the measure and cut because it is so very hard for me to cut things (which is why I don’t do a lot of costuming any more. My hand is too painful for that). She did a very good job on it. Keep in mind upon viewing the cosplay that I made this all up out of my own wardrobe and furry help from havocmangawip. I didn’t want to permanently affix the fur to my very expensive rain coat (which did NOT like being safety pinned either) I could easily stalk Goodwill looking for a suitable brown coat in the future. Sadly I didn’t have pearls of the right length. Too short or too long so I wore both and gave the long ones a mobster moll flapper twist which would be appropriate enough for Chris. The dress was black (live with it, I don’t own a purple one…YET) I actually found pantyhose. Keep in mind I’m tall and fat, not good when it comes to hose.

Oddly enough the hose behaved until we stopped for lunch at Wendy’s on the way up then they started rolling a little as I feared. I figured I’d spend the con hiking up my waistband but they rolled all the way down and started ripping in the crotch, just too short. I ended up taking them off before we even got into the con. The registrar girls loved the coat so yay.

Let me say this, it’s my understanding that anime punch is mostly run by college kids and I believe it. What a mess. One, almost everything of interest is designed for the people staying at the hotel, fair enough I suppose but is it too much to ask for some discussions to be before 5 pm. Almost all the things evil_little_dog and I would have wanted to do were after 5 and most between 9-midnight. I wasn’t staying that late especially since we wanted to see the dealers’ room which has a tendency to sell out by then. Also the program was not organized at all. Seriously I think the events were typed in as the organizers remembered them. There was no order I could see, not alphabetic, not by day, not by time. You had to pick through all the pages to find out what was happening when. Might even write and suggest please list all the events of friday in one place then sat...etc

The dealers’ room was small and if you wanted anything other than Naruto or Bleach you were pretty much hosed. I guess (though I hadn’t realized it since I’m not really reading manga/anime news anymore) that FMAB hasn’t really caught on. I guess Arakawa is going through what Stephen King did with The Shining, sold the rights a little too soon and no one wanted to see version #2. That’s a pity since really both are more faithful to the text. Anyhow, there was some FMA stuff but mostly the same crap as always, a little Deathnote (which I don’t like much) and a little D. Gray-man.

I did get some key chains which I needed. I ended up buying the new Roy Mustang action figure. I had eyed him on Ebay. He’s lovely but he’s expensive enough without the 20$ + postage. His face is lovely, both of them (exchangeable heads) but the body is a tad wonky. They had very little variety in stuff, some manga, some dvds/soundtracks, key chains and a few cosplay items. None of the other fan stuff that’s out there (I know eBay is killing the dealers’ room) Talked a bit with one sellar who slipped up and bitterly uttered ‘pirating is killing the production of manga’ then tried to cover it when a few people gave him sharp looks. Sadly, he’s right. I’m not guiltless of this by any means but I try not to read them online. It put several anime companies out of business and apparently getting manga you can hold and appreciate might be going the same way. Sigh.

They had several steam punk vendors but only one that had anything of real quality (the rest were selling cheap plastic goggles). I really liked that one vendor and probably should have snagged a business card. Ah well. I did get a few gifts between the dealers’ room and the art alley. After that I needed to sit down. There con wasn’t very crowded but there were some fun cosplayers (see below), very few from FMA (one Ed, one Havoc, one Maes, 2 Greeds and that was it), none from D. Gray-man, lots of Bleach and Naruto.

While I was resting up and we were deciding did we want to kill an hour so we could find one lecture we might have wanted to hear, I saw the Hyatt’s bar was right outside the con entrance. Where better to cosplay Chris? They had Guinness on tap and that made the cute young man we sat next to take notice. Oooo, you’re going to drink that? He talked to us for an hour. He was there for the con. After that we decided we really didn’t want to hear any of the speakers and just headed out to shop in the real world and go for dinner.

It was a nice time. Came home, let the boys in, watched them play for a while then they wanted out. At midnight I heard a scratching at the door. Kanda wanted back in. He loved evil_little_dog’s braids. He thought that was the best thing evah. (Ling thinks the pulled-out futon rules) Below are the cosplay pictures. It was. not overly crowded like the one in Boston. All three of us got short tempered last year because of the sheer numbers of people. it was a three hour wait to get in there (luckily I was traveling with a blind girl, the disabled don't have to wait) In Columbus we pretty much just walked in.

That is a very awesome Chris cosplay indeed. You've definitely got the chutzpah to back it up, too. The pearls with a knot in totally work, and the glass of Guinness works even better, especially the European-style goblet glass. I can buy Chris as a stout drinker for sure.

Bummer that the con wasn't so well organised, but it looks like the bar and that pretty Hei kind of made up for it ...

i just wish I had felt a little better instead of sleepwalking thru the role. Oh and it was HOT in there I was dying. I probably would have bough a whiskey which would be more appropriate but hotel bars are so overpriced and I'm cheap.

BTW - in answer to your hose problem, and as a big girl myself, can I suggest that you wear another pair of (snug) panties over them? As long as it doesn't get too hot, that should work quite well untill you can find a supplier that fits you properly...

I ususally solve the problem by wearing garters (I don't wear hose at work, just sandles with my skirts) Or have enough time to buy proper hose from plus shops. the crap at walmart won't cut it. It was too hot for the hose anyhow.I probably would have ditched them if they had fit anyhow

I don't know if you noticed on this week's or maybe last week's Cops, but they arrested a guy wearing an FMA shirt. I died. Now I'm doubly dying because I think the perp was wearing the same shirt as ELD.
