It was her grandmother’s ring, a band of rose gold done as a wreath of cherry blossoms. Her mother also wore it, but at the end, when she knew her life was drawing to a close, she refused to be buried with it. It had gone into a drawer for Riza on her wedding day. When her father died, Riza left it with her grandfather until she was settled. She hadn’t planned on never really being settled but life had other ideas.

Roy wanted her to retire, to not wait out her grandfather’s time as Fuhrer, but she couldn’t do that. The foolish man just didn’t see he needed her where she was for now, at his side, with her gun. She knew he understood that she didn’t like hiding their love in the shadows, almost fearing it would fail to thrive like a sun-starved rose. They were stronger than that, and she took comfort in it.

But he could always surprise her. She broke down into tears at Ed and Winry’s wedding when Roy took the battered old velvet ring box out of his pocket – leave it to him to get it from her grandfather. He put the ring on her finger then, a brilliant token of at least three loves. It couldn’t be official, but they considered themselves married that day. If anyone asked, she told them she was tired of leaving her granny’s beautiful ring in a drawer.

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with family” – Anthony Brandt

Edward wasn’t sure which token of friendship and well wishes surprised him more. Ling had sent baby rattles, one in the shape of a dragon, the other a phoenix that Ed had promptly claimed too fine – they were silver after all – for baby hands. Truth was, they were just too cool and he was keeping them in his office. Winry had given him the evil eye, but Ed was used to that.

Hearing his young son fussing in the crib, Ed went to check on him before Phillip could wake Winry out of a much needed nap. Ed pulled back the Ishbalan baby blanket and picked his son up. Yes, the blanket had to have been the most unexpected of gifts sent by Meddur, the name Scar was using now. The letter attached to it mentioned the man’s respect for Edward and his regrets for what he had done to Winry. The blue, white and gold blanket bore an Ishbalan design of flowers.

Ed grabbed a stuffed cat and headed downstairs and out onto the porch. Cradling his son, he let the baby examine the stuffed toy with Phillip’s usual curiosity. Ed couldn’t remember if it was from Al or the bastard. Apparently Roy felt the need to do his part and Maes’s. Between Uncle Al and Uncle Roy, there were so many toys in the house, Ed felt like he was living in a toy store. Who knew a baby could make people act like idiots? Wouldn’t catch him acting like that.

Gazing down into his son’s bright gold eyes, Ed grinned then leaned over and blew a raspberry on the boy’s belly until Phillip was giggling and flailing. Nothing silly about that, right? Phillip was a lucky baby to have such an extended family; they all were lucky.

Author’s Note #2 – I’ve used Moroccan culture and art as a basis for the Ishbalan’s. To that end, Meddur is a Moroccan Berber name meaning ‘alive.’ Seemed to fit a man who died twice. Phillip’s name is a nod to Phillippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim otherwise known as the alchemist Paracelsus, who I have no doubt Arakawa used for Hohenheim (hers was much better looking, just saying)

Oh, I loved both of these! The first one was so incredibly sweet.

Truth was, they were just too cool and he was keeping them in his office.

Hahahaha!! Oh, Ed.

Who knew a baby could make people act like idiots? Wouldn’t catch him acting like that.

:P

Just adorable.

thank you very much. I'm glad you liked them

Ed still maintains that a dragon rattle is too cool to give a baby and that belly raspberries aren't silly

Oh, the first one is nice and subtle, but the second one has got to be fav! XD Not-silly!Ed FTW - and the rattlers, that's just priceless. ^^

Cool naming, especially Scar's one seems very fitting - I've lost count of how many times the man has practically died.

thank you very much.

I just had to write Ed as a daddy...stealing his son's toys.

Well we do know Scar yelled at Olivia for them saving him a second time but surely there have been many more close calls

Gawd, these are both so sweet my teeth are aching now.

I say that's what the great kow had in mind, since Homunculus tried to name him Theophilatos Bombastus first before Hohenheim complained that it was way too long.

Both fics were very sweet and heartwarming. Since Roy and Riza are very private people, I can imagine them getting married in a secret, unofficial ceremony - they don't need to publicly profess their love, anyway, since people can see right through them. Besides, I don't think public displays of affection are their thing anyway, so the scenario in this fic is plausible.

The Ed/Winry fic was cute! I remember Ed having a weird sense of what designs are cool/badass, so I can imagine him wanting to keep something so ornately decorated as a dragon-shaped rattle. Also, I thought that it was sweet of Scar to send a gift.

These fics really made me smile. Nice work!

thank you very much.

About the only time I've given Roy/Riza public weddings is when Roy has been turned into an ambassador or something else public and political. Private works for them

Ed does have this Goth-boy sensibility to him.

aaahahaha, MY future Ed also blows at his children's bellies XDDD it's a very cute little gesture. and the name you picked for his boy is fantastic^^ and seems kind of funny a coincidence that I use it for his grandson^^; the fact he took those two rattles is just too amusing XDD Ling must've spent too much time with him to know perfectly well what he may like XDD

the Roy/Riza one was beautiful and perfectly set ;w; calm and stern just like her usual stance, but beautiful and loving, just how I expect them to be when nobody's watching^^

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
thank you very much. Okay that is funny you used that name for his grandson, it not being such a popular name (reminds me that I wanted to ask if you minded if I put you on my flist)

Oh I think by now Ling definitely knows what Ed likes

Roy and Riza seem to be masters of understatement and control (well usually)

you're very welcome :)
yes, it is a little unusual, but I was thinking about the same resource information as you used, and I'm actually surprised that so few people thought about it, having such a great material in the canon
(actually, I was pretty sure I had you on my flist as well, until I checked my profile^^; fixed it already, so I deffinitely don't mind:))

yeah, spent way too much time with the guy^^; it's still very adorable

they are, which makes them a very unique and likable couple.

I think honestly only a handful of us really looked into actual alchemy (me I've been studying it since the 80's when I got my chemistry degree)

I'm very very fond of Royai (definitely my favorite ship in FMA, though I do tend to pass Roy around to others)

will go look at my flist now

Date: 2010-06-17 06:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dzioo.livejournal.com
you don't have to seriously study alchemy, even when you look up Hohenheim's name on Wiki you'll surely find who he actually was. and any other major name included in the series, they are usually picked up and have certain meaning and parallels (like Xerxes or Amestris, Theofilus being the one to create the first homunculus and so on)

it's a nice ship indeed, because it has enough material to hint certain feelings but not so obvious :)

yes this is also true. There is an easy wealth of info on line.

this fandom has a lot of nice ships imo

If it's a stuffed cat I think it would be from Uncle Al. Stuffed doggies would be from Roy (or possibly Riza).

well yes that's probably true

These are cute. I love Ed being a goofy dad and stealing the rattle because it's cool. Nice to see he hasn't grown up completely. XD

Hello there! I've been lurking around your journal for a while, but I believe it's the first time I come out and actually comment...

I loved these! The first one was really sweet (gotta love Roy proposing in such a romantic setting, and with her grandmother's ring, no less), and I absolutely love the second one - the idea of Ed stealing his son's toys because they're "just too cool" is too funny for words. And the fact that I could actually see him do that makes it even better!

The mention of Uncle Roy and Uncle Al made me smile, as did the fact that Scar actually sent a gift for the baby.
Really, I could picture the entire extended family sitting around a table outside, enjoying an sunlit afternoon and laughing at the boys' antics...

Lovely job!!

thank you, nice to see you here.

I'm so glad you liked these. Everyone seems to love Ed stealing those rattles. Roy is a romantic sap.

giving Scar a softer side seems to be popular too
