Last night I thought Kanda had his squeaky mouse toy then thought hmmm no i never took that back out of the closet. Hmmmm. Didn't see a mouse.

this morning my migraine wouldn't let me sleep or eat. I get up and Kanda presents a mouse head. So I did hear a real one... My fear is poison since I know the neighbors are all having issues too. I toss the head, go to the bathroom, he tears off and I hear more squeaking. don't see that mouse either but i KNOW it's there.

It started squeaking in here while i'm typing this. They are now actively avoiding the areas they had been in (where i put the traps) this sucks. Yes, landlord should be here today because something is going wrong with the heat pump/ac and that's $$$$ so he'll show up for that issue.

And I'm probably goign to be mostly offline for the next week to two weeks since I'm nearly out of megabytes on my damn broadband monthly allotment. God this sucks.

now i 'm really mad. Kanda shit in front of his box again. I'm now cleaning his box daily but i can't be there to clean it every time he uses it. I'm not sure what to do. Maybe take the lid off so he can see other ways of stepping in if he insists on pissing/shitting right at the entrance. I know i could get one of those fancy self cleaning ones BUT Kanda is afraid of noise and I think that might put him off the box entirely. Suggestions?

No advice for the mice, but *hugs* all around for that.

As for the litter tray, I find open boxes (no lid) are better. They make some with the raised rings around the edge if that makes sense. I have a giant one (literally giant) that I got for Eddy since he was such a messy boy. I used to have this one and it worked well too.

But you said yours has a lid? The one I linked to is (or should be unless I goofed) a big bin with high sides, but no top. The thing with covered boxes is they tend to hold onto odor a lot, which is why people like them because the smell stays in the box. But I think it gets too strong for them to want to keep going in. We used to have problems with our previous cats and the covered bins. Once I bought a larger, open tray we've had no more issues. Eddy was very bad about throwing litter out of the tray w had, but then I got this giant tray that is literally 2x4 ft and he was fine with it (scooped once daily, washed every 2 weeks). Now that he passed and it's just Abby it is a pretty ridiculous litter tray, but I can scoop it every other day now and it's all good. Even with the litter tray stuff cats are SO much less work than the dogs, grooming not even included in that statement. XD

mine looks like that IF you take the lid off. WHich i did so i have a huge sided expanse of litter in a box in my kitchen. how gross. (and yes it's the ONLY place to put it. I might end up rearranging things and leaving it in the mouse-infested closet and maybe kill two birds with one stone

Iktomi was a litter thrower. Kanda is better than that but he had started pooping up front maybe now he'll be ok.

oh lord the cats being less work, why do you think i have them and not dogs? I'm too lazy to do a dog justice right now.

but i am worried about that mouse he ate. the landlord did put poison in the empty apt and under this place nad the new mouse shit is blue..poison color.

Our cat Thorsten is finicky about the litter box too. We had a box with a lid fir awhile, but ended having to take it off.

Kittehs do not like stepping in their own mess! Get the biggest one you can find with NO LID. My Dad uses an underbed storage box and I have a HUGE litterbox IN an underbed storage box. If he can see where his pee/poo is and he doesn't have to walk in it, he may be happier. And when you clean the box are you washing it? I use scoopable litter but still empty and wash the damn thing once a week.

Spoiled cats are spoiled.

At least Kanda is earning his keep with the mice. When I get a roach in here, mine jump up on the furniture and act like Victorian maidens until I remove/kill it. They only want to eat the soft little white moths.

Faghelehs.

yeah i wash it weekly. He was fine with the lid until two days ago when he suddenly decided to keep pooping right in the entryway. I took off the lid.

Kanda is trying with the mice. Now that is hysterical about your cats and the roachs.

Damn, I can so relate to the energy surging through your exasperated world. There are mouse guts outside my back door, and I'm having to lock my dog in the kennel every night to avoid the peeing in my son's room.

Definitely try getting rid of the lid. Maybe he will go back in the box. Or buy an entirely new one with no scent of the old? Cuz he should go even if there's poop in it.

My sincere sympathies and hugs.

he goes in the box just fine but he poops once and if i'm not johnny on the spot and he has to poop again... the lid is off

the dog peeing in your son's room is awful.

the mouse guts could be outside my place no problem. Kanda tried to bring me that head in teh bathroom

We found that our cats were afraid to use the litter box with lid, and we has no problems once we simply removed it. I believe a lid with just one entrance makes the box feel like too much of a trap.

he's been fine with it for two months but now suddenly it's an issue and the problem is he poops literally at the entrance so yeah he doesn't want to step back in. i took the lid off. we shall see

Using a big underbed storage box is what works for Chablis. They're roomy, they're cheap and Kitty can dig in a wide area (Chablis is a digger--she digs on the edge of the box and even reaches over onto the floor sometimes). Get two or three boxes and switch them out as needed if you have to, so Kanda doesn't have to smell poo. He seems to be a finicky soul.

The downside of this is that it requires a _lot_ of litter to fill those storage boxes. Chablis uses fine-grained Scoop Away, which is fairly pricey, but because her litterbox is out on the screen porch we can get away with changing it less often.

Maybe if you change the box and the brand of litter at the same time, it will short-circuit whatever trauma Kanda is coming to associate with the litterbox he has now? It might be worth a try.

i have no room for osmething that big. Mom HAS gone to that for her monster-sized cat. for that matter no room for 2 boxes unless i want one in a bedroom or behind where i sit on the couch.

I took off the lid. we'll start there

I agree with enemytosleep up there; a big box with very high sides; it's working very well for Silly, but he, too, will poop on the floor outside the box if I don't clean it to his satisfaction. I've gotten so used to it I don't fuss, just keep the wipes handy and try to make sure I clean both boxes twice a day...

i'm going to be right there with you I think. I cleaned twice yesterday and he's still mad

however i worry now since i'm finding blue mouse poo...the color of the poison the landlord put under the buildings

Argh, I hope Kanda's not ingesting mouse poison through eating poisoned mice.

I just don't have enough practical experience with mice infestations; we've had the occasional mouse, but nothing like the trouble you're having.

I hear him killing another mouse under my futon right now but i'm just sitting here waiting for the noise to die down before i move any furniture

Ugh, ugh, ugh. I am so sorry you have to go through this. I have no advice at all possible to give -- we clean Jasper's litter once a day around midnight. We also use a plastic (highly degradable) liner in our box, so we just lift that out and put a new one in. I don't know if that would help in what you've got, since I don't know Kanda or your box. But ew, so frustrating! Thinking of you.
