For the longest time, Roy thought nothing could be worse than the screams in battle, but often the war was ominously quiet, days dragging by with nothing happening. Afterward, he decided that the worst part was the unending, breath-robbing heat. What idiot decided on wool uniforms? Obviously, some dimwit who had never seen a moment of action and had only the vaguest concept of what a desert was. Days like today as he trudged to a new location with his men and Hawkeye whom he had commandeered, Roy swore he would find the bastard designer and lock him in a sweat box while periodically dumping in sand and agitating.
Perspiration rolling down his spine, a nasty case of sweat rash building up – he didn’t doubt his ass was cherry red at this point – Roy thought he knew what hell was. Fate must have read his mind because something chewed into the side of his neck hard. Cursing too loudly for the surroundings, Roy swatted at his neck. A fat, black horse fly buzzed away from his neck and proceeded to try and bite Riza on her wrist.
His neck beginning to itch and swell, Roy snapped. Flames arced. The fly sizzled, a truly satisfying sound, as he returned it to the hell it came from.
Riza gave him a sour look. “A bit of overkill there, sir.”
“Wouldn’t say that if it had managed to take a chunk out of you.”
