“It’s extremely cold out there.” Roy shuffled into his temporary quarters. “My fingers and toes are so cold, they’re burning. Briggs should never be part of our training.”

“Roy, I didn’t sneak in here, against the rules, to listen to you whine,” Riza turned the knob on the radiator. It rattled and hissed as more steam pumped through it.

“Your body parts didn’t disappear looking for warmth. They may never come back.”

“That’ll put a damper on tonight’s plans.” She grinned over her shoulder.

He snorted at her, peeling off his gloves. “They might just need a little rubbing to coax them back out.”

Riza went over and stroked his cheek, his skin twitching under her icy fingers. “Are you sure that is the way to go? I just came back inside, too.”

“Brrr, icicle fingers. I bet other parts of you are warmer.” His cold-reddened hand skimmed long the outside of her thigh before making the revolution in toward a usually hotter climate.

“You’d be surprised, though I suppose you make a fire by rubbing two cold sticks together.” Riza struggled with the buttons to his jacket.

Roy pulled her to him. “If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s to make us burn.”

“No, no, put your hands here. You’re extremely bad at this, you know. With as many women as you grew up with, I would have thought you’d be better at this,” Maes admonished.

“It’s my first time. You should be gentle with me,” Roy protested.

“I would if you followed instructions better. Honestly, how did you survive training?” Maes snorted. “No, the hand goes here…aw, see what you’ve done now? This isn’t good.”

The newborn Roy was holding like a flour sack let out a shrill scream as the incompetent handling woke her up. Elicia’s face reddened, scrunching up as her tiny lungs let loose with a barrage of noise far too big for her small body. Her fist balled up, shaking in impotent fury.

“Maes, make her stop.”

“You woke her up; I should make you console her.” Maes scooped his daughter up out of his best friend’s hands, cuddling her against his shoulder. Elicia wailed a little more than quieted, making snuffling noises against her father.

“Are you sure she’s the cutest baby ever born?” Roy rubbed his ear. “Maybe the loudest.”

“Ignore the mean idiot, Elicia. He doesn’t know perfection when he sees it,” Maes cooed, patting his daughter’s back.

“No, but I know crazy when I see it,” Roy mumbled.

The patting hand left Elicia’s back just long enough to backhand Roy in the head. “Who’s daddy’s precious girl?”

Roy got up and caressed Elicia’s bald head. “She is beautiful, Maes. Just like her mother. Now let’s hope she gets her sanity from Gracia, too.”
