Chris couldn’t stand seeing the overwhelming sadness in her young nephew’s eyes. It should have been a happy day coming up for him but instead, Roy was celebrating his first birthday without his parents. She had heard him sobbing all night last night but he wouldn’t own up to it, trying to be a brave little man.
He clung to one of his alchemy books, pretending to read it, but she knew he used it to shield his eyes half the afternoon. Chris sat next to Roy, rubbing his back. “I wish I could make this better for you, Roy.”
“I’m okay.”
“You’re not and that’s all right. I want to do something special for your birthday. What’s the one thing you really want?” She hoped that wasn’t an invitation for him to talk about bringing his parents back. She didn’t know how to handle that.
“Pumpkin soup. Granny’s recipe. Dad used to make it. It’s my favorite.” Roy rubbed his reddened eyes.
XXX
Chris ransacked old boxes from her childhood until she found the book of recipes she knew her mom had copied out for her. Cream, honey, cinnamon and ginger mixed with chicken stock, pumpkin and a hint of white wine. It was decadent and not nearly as hard to make as she feared.
It was worth the work to see Roy’s face light up. It was a quiet birthday, the two of them sipping soup and remembering. They both would be all right, someday.
