There was literally no way my college should have been opened today but it was so I naturally went in. My nurses came in. If nothing else, they tend to be far more dedicated than my anatomy students. Half of which wrote to tell me J county is under a level 2 snow alert. I can't come because we're not allowed out. To which I responded, I also live there and I'm at work. too bad you're unexcused. level THREE is where we're not allowed out.

Still snowing. It looks so beautiful and shall continue to do so (so long as I don't get ice and lose power)

So on to the writing. [livejournal.com profile] circletpress just put up this open call. Like Heaven or Hell Yes I'm hastily trying to do something for it.

I also wanted to share this post on the true cost to the artists when you illegally download It's very well written. One of the reasons sales on my latest story were way down was within 24 hours the pirates had it. Think about being an author, losing your advance because the pirating ate away your sales. A lot of my flist is made up of authors/artists/musicians. This affects us all and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog for bringing it to my attention.

back to writing for me. both bigbangs are so stalled. geez. A note to all authors: if your character is such a miserable bitch that the reader is hoping the bad guys win, you've done something wrong (yes I'm looking at you current mystery at my bedside)

this is the root cellar. It looks pretty good now that it's been white washed. Most of my life it was just bare unpainted rock and crumbling plaster. don't know what's leaking out of the can. don't wanna. Notice even more scary joists? WHen I was growing up it was filled with giant food cans from the mental hospital granny was a cook at

I've read The Chosen from that list. That's it.

it's a pretty odd list

I didn't realize The Chosen was so old. That's the only one I've read.

Root cellars are simply made to be creepy (says she who has always lived in the lands of no basements).

that seems to be the only one anyone has read (not me, guess maybe i should) but really, so old? waah! :-)

aren't they though. You can just about see Sean Patrick and Della or Sulien and Maddie having to hunker down in one of these in an emergency (Sulien would be whining)

I meant book-wise; I found it in high school and assumed it was new then (because I bought it in hardback). I guess it wasn't.

Well, the basements Sean Patrick has been in haven't been exactly root cellars -- the storm cellar at the O'Connor Ranch is like real rooms underground; and you've SEEN the description of Sean Patrick's underground apartment! *g*

haha, yeah i guess not

this is true. You all don't have a lot of basements out that way do you?

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Nope. They're rare as hen's teeth out these parts. I was always fascinated by them because they are so rare out here -- when I was very little we lived in a house that had a half-basement, but that's only because the "ground floor" was half-sunk (the windows were at ground level), and you had to go down a flight of stairs to the kitchen and main living room, then up a flight to the bedrooms and family room.

Since then, though, only ground-level houses.

I wonder why. I mean I know why FL doesn't have them. I'd think that in the heat of the desert you'd want something cool and below ground

I'd let you loose in Granny's basement if i could

I've often wondered the same thing. I don't know. Maybe because of the rocky soil, the alkaline, or some other construction reason I'm unaware of...

I figure it has to be something because well root cellars were helpful things back in the day so there had to be a reason. hmmm.

Sheesh, is there nothing people won't pirate? How can we writers protect ourselves? Thanks for the informative post.

unfortunately there seems to be very little we can do. The publishers go after them but as soon as you shut them down in one spot they're up again in another

We got two to three inches of fluffy snow and they had kids on a 2 hour delay yesterday and I saw even today, there are still some schools with a 2-hour delay. REALLY? I remember when it had to be at least a foot before they thought of putting us on a delay when I was in school. ><

Oh yes, I read Lilith Saintcrow's blog and she's had a problem with e-book pirates before and it came up again with some idiot trying to justify stealing it because it wasn't being sold in his country. >:(

last friday there was NO snow and they had 2 hour delays here. Yesterday and today would be appropriate to delay/close. It is bad. we got about a half foot.

thanks for the other post as well.

I don't download stuff unless it is freeware. As an artist, it pisses me off when there is pirated stuff.

There are a couple of orbs in the basement photo. Were you kicking up dust or are those spooks? (*Insert scene from "The Wizard of Oz" where the lion is chanting, "I do believe in spooks".*)

same here. I even feel guilty when i do look at manga online even when I AM buying it (and didn't feel too bad when one manga was taken off line)

honestly, probably dust. I think the ghosts stay upstairs.
