Chris knew her nephew thought he was just so bright and the truth of it was Roy was one of the most intelligent people she knew. Chris proudly acknowledged that he could read anything someone set in front of him and could reason through some fairly complex issues. He was beginning truly to shine as a budding alchemist, outstripping the local talent's ability to train him. Bright as Roy was, he was still an idiot.
“Miss Mustang?”
She looked up at the doctor wheeling her nine-year-old nephew toward her. The boy's arm was in a heavy cast. “We've got him all fixed up.”
“Thank you, Dr. Smith.” Chris got up. “How bad was it?”
“Broken in two places.” Smith ruffled Roy's hair. “But he doesn't want to say why he thought it was a good idea to try to jump from balcony to balcony at your place.”
“Oh, I know why he did that,” Chris said.
“You don't know,” Roy protested. “You weren't there.”
“You and your friends were trying to impress a girl,” Chris replied and her nephew's mouth flopped open.
“Good call,” Dr Smith laughed.
“For a boy to do something that dumb either he's drunk or trying to impress a girl.” Chris rolled her eyes.
“Hey!” Roy pouted.
“So true.” Dr. Smith wagged his head. “And it probably doesn't impress the ladies at all.”
“It's an early warning system. This one's dumb girls, run.” Chris smirked.
“My arm hurts.” Roy sulked.
“I'm sure it does. Remember this the next time you decide to show off for a girl.” Chris urged her injured kin up.
“I almost made it.”
“Almost is never good enough, Roy. Remember that.” She gave his uninjured arm a pat to soften the words. "And we'll talk about the right way to impress a girl."
