I know some of you have joy this week. Me, stayed the same. I'm beginning to think that will be my lot in life because now that I found out I can go swim, I'm not sure I can because of my shoulder. boo hoo for me.

So no exercise types or much of anything else this week except for this: weight watcher's new complete cookbook, just another weapon in the battle of the bulge.

It's interesting, really, how we perceive weight. We battle it. Such an aggressive concept and well maybe that's the best way to think about it. Carrie Fisher is now the new spokeswoman for Jenny Craig and she says something to the effect of 'the world is a hostile place for a fat person.' (well the world is hostile in general but yes, I think this is true) We get hostile about our own appearance. We get hostile when medical professionals point out all the things that can go wrong with our health. You get the picture.

For me, it's about the health as much as anything and I think that's why I keep putting in recipes here (well besides I'm a lazy ass and don't want to exercise). We need to eat well and that's what I'm trying to give us here, something healthy to eat. The ancients and Asian medicine has known this for centuries. Just a few samples here:

Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food. ~Hippocrates

Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food. ~Hippocrates

When diet is wrong medicine is of no use.
When diet is correct medicine is of no need.
~Ayurvedic Proverb

He that takes medicine and neglects diet, wastes the skill of the physician. ~Chinese Proverb

So where does that leave us? Basically, we need to take control of our kitchens. I know not everyone on my list cooks and I'm not going to preach that you learn (Okay you should). However, the only way to keep control of what is going into your body is to make the food yourself. PRocessed foods, frozen foods, stuff at restaurants, there is no way of controlling the fat, salt etc going into these. Even if you DO cook, our food has gotten way less healthy. It's estimated that chicken, for example has 300% more fat in it than 30 years ago when I was a kid. Scary.

So what do we do? Our best I guess. Read the labels, notice how small they make them now that they know more people are reading them? Make choices. I'm not even saying buy organic since that is so poorly controlled and over priced but if's not too bad, give it a try (like today my organic carrots were only 20 cents more than regular so I bought them). There is no reason healthy food should taste like unflavored tofu blobs. Look online, in books, in what I share and find healthy tasty (and often easy) things to make.

If you don't want to cook, there are still things you can do. We can all look up Eat This Not That online or get the books. I have the one 'for the market place' since I DO mostly cook. They have weekly suggestions and make menus transparent for most of the big chain eateries. The drawback to the Eat this not that are triple fold, too often for my taste they compare apples to oranges (dude, if you're telling me my chocolate shake is unhealthy compare it to another chocolate shake not flavored water or some shit) and well, after a while reading their columns you become afraid to eat anything.

Red Cabbage with Ginger
(serves 4)

2 tsp olive oil
½ red onion thinly sliced (frankly I prefer vidalias and so used them)
2 TBS minced peeled fresh ginger (if you only have powdered play with the hotness level you want)
4 cups thinly sliced red cabbage
2/3 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth

Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat, add onion and ginger; cook stirring until fragrant about 1 min. Stir in cabbage and broth. Reduce heat and simmer covered, stirring occasionally until cabbage is tender @ 20 min.

Serving size is ¼ cup = 49 calories. (points plus value 1)

Healthy extra – added in a thinly sliced apple along with the cabbage.

p.s if you want me to look up things like pork or fish just ask me. I don't normally eat those things but I have tons of cook books around. I might not prescribe to any one diet plan but I've got the low cal cooking knocked.

They used to coarse chop cabbage at Holiday House and fry it in a little bit of oil. It was very good. I can't remember what sort of seasoning they used, but I'd always get it when I worked.

All very true. I wish I had the time to cook every meal and take full control of what I eat, but there lies the main issue: no one has the time. Fastfood is so easy and convenient, and even though it's terrible, I've found myself going through the drive thru on the way to school or the funeral home because it's at least *something*, you know? That's probably one of my biggest goals right now, making the time to actually cook.

Awesome recipe! Will have to try it.

some people slot out a couple hours and cook for most of the week all at once and just reheat so it's more convienent.

Even with no time I still don't do fast food that often mostly because I don't like most of it. So instead I will substitue in frozen food but i don't like most of that either. so here is where my pickiness comes in handy. I hate most processed food so I cook but then i make pasta to save time and that's no good either.

the hardest part of this recipe is cutting stuff up. it's so easy

THIS is why I multicook (http://ishte.livejournal.com/245477.html). That way I can just reach in the fridge and pick three little baggies with whatever in them I want, pop em in the nuke and eat them. If necessary, I can stick them in the fridge the night before, and then pack them for lunch the next day, pop them in the nuke at work (which is at home now, but before) or school (when I had school) and eat the right thing instead of the wrong thing.

You may want to make sure that you haven't gotten dehydrated. suck down as much water as you can stand for a couple of hours when you feel like that after a work out. I know it's a couple/few days down the line now, but for future reference. I hope you feel better already.

4 more pounds for a total of 14 off.

The most complicated thing I cook is an egg or stir fry, which is all one pan/wok stuff (and I'm super lazy about cooking when I do do it). What I eat is a lot of fresh stuff/raw (I'm a vegetarian so no meat or fish). I haven't had fast food since middle school, and I don't do prepackaged stuff very often (loaded with sodium and preservatives).

I do eat a lot of grains, beans/nuts, vegetables, fruit (YUCK, I do this for Dr H), a bit of dairy (lactose intolerant, but I think eggs are considered dairy? and I do eat cheese in moderation), and soy. I don't watch calories so much as sugar intake, and I avoid things with syrup and added sugar. I gained ll the weight eating dessert treats Dr. Bob brought into the house, but I think we've finally come to an understanding about that - if he insists, I'd rather he eat it while working.

this one is simple enough you could probably do it. Sadly I can not eat veggies raw any more. hell I'm not even supposed to be eating them period.

but yeah fruits and veggies especially in cans get loaded down with so much crap you do not need to be eating. Then we grow them in crap, spray them with crap, it's next to impossible to find them the way they should be. sigh.

well yes dessert treats will be a big problem.

They need to transplant your brain into a new body. Just saying. XD

Mostly ice cream for me, which is doubly stupid since I'm lactose intolerant, so it's rather painful when I do have it.

What I really need to start doing is sleeping. That's supposed to be good for you or something like that.

Date: 2011-02-14 07:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
i'm all for that really.

yeah I get that way with ice cream too for the same reason. I can handle a wee bit but...

sleeping even helps you lose weight so they tell me. maybe that's my problem

i was really good with the gym, but my weight is stuck this week, but can only blame it on me. slipped a few times to many.

just bought some red cabbage, never thought to put ginger in it. great idea.

sometimes the body just does that. I mean i was at the gym 5 days a week and on a highly restricted doctor monitored diet once and lost nothing.

it's good stuff that red cabbage

I love red cabbage! I'm afraid I agree with you completely about cooking and taking control of your own food. Of course, that's easy for me to say because I cook.

1lb off this week, but given I lost the first chunk pretty fast and then plateaued, I'm happy if the rest comes off slowly (I'm 5lb off my goal for end March, 9lb off a BMI of 25, and about 12lb off my ultimate goal weight for summer).

you should enjoy this then. Yes, it is easy to say when we cook. Some people i know just refuse to even learn then whine to me about not being able to loose weight and see no connection between crappy processed food and taking a little control over it.

yay for you though. good luck

I didn't even do anything last week because my back was killing me and the last thing I wanted to do was exercise. so I forgot to weigh myself. I'll have to do that tonight to see what I'm at or if I shifted at all.

I don't cook much but the roomie does and she's trying to get me at least to cook more. Either of us rarely go to fast food anymore except if we go up to the barn during the week and we only get home around 9 so it's a little late to make something. So it's either a sandwich or something really easy like left overs.

Although McDonald's now have the Shamrock Shakes and that's about the only time I get shakes from them.

I tried this on Thursday and it turned out pretty good. http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/diabetic-recipes/Beef-and-Blue-Cheese-Casserole/r6708.html

Instead of the blue cheese, I just used a regular colby jack shredded cheese. it was still yummy.

Edit: Oh and I used turkey hamburger instead of regular.

eh one or two milky excesses is probably okay.

that does sound good. I would probably use chicken or tofu ground 'meat'

This is what I use, because I'm registered there and I like the tracking information and social options etc. It also has a pretty good database with a LOT of different stuff, various brands and you can add to it yourself too. I don't think it shows the diabetic information or glycemic index.

http://nutritiondata.self.com/

This site definitely has more intensive information about foods. Of course it shows the basic label required by law, but also glycemic load, inflammation factor, Nutritional Target Map, Caloric Ratio Pyramid (shows you where most of the calories come from. Gives you the good and the bad, for example: Jerusalem Artichoke:

The good: This food is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Thiamin, Phosphorus and Potassium, and a very good source of Iron.

The bad: A large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.

(which of course in the case of this particular food is because it's a veggie and has no fat, and almost not protein... never mind a whole cup is only like 109 calories anyway haha and usually 1/2 cu is a serving of a veggie.)

I've apparently been at station keeping all week. and of course I'm not paying attention here until Wednesday (thursday now). Too busy with my own business I guess. I gained 2 pounds, but as of today I'm back down to 150.4. So we'll see how it is by next Sunday I guess.

This week has been super busy for me, just trying to get my business off the ground and meet my start up goals. One is met. Two more to go. I have loads of product now, and a party scheduled for Saturday that should recoup some of that cost and put me in the green. Whoo...

I discovered Wendy's Asiago Ranch Chicken Club (with the grilled chicken) and it's super yummy, but it's so big that Lexi and I can split one and a value fry and we're both quite satisfied. and only 440 calories for both. leave off the fries and it's only 280.

PS... interesting idea with the cabbage. I don't usually like cabbage, but I've found I like cabbage rolls. My friend Donna's are the best, but Dot's Market has some that are passable too. And filing. ^_^ I may have to try this once I'm on a little more financial recovery here. I need to find out why I don't have my W-2 forms yet.
